Capacitor Polarity
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:00:57 pm »
Hi,

I have this Toshiba Laptop Charger I'm fixing, Had a problematic cap so I desoldered it and order on of the same capacitance and voltage (82uf 400V). Problem is the PCB has no indication for the cap polarity. (C051)

How can I find the correct polarity.

Thanks.

My guess would be that it is non polarised as polarity is not shown, follow the circuit through to check where it goes if one trace to goes to a diode you will have the polarity.

It looks like the main(s) filter cap right after the diode bridge, so it should not be too hard to figure out the polarity.
Keyboard error: Press F1 to continue.

Don't you see that black bar on the right side of the capacitor footprint?  That's the NEGATIVE of the capacitor.

Yeah, after some zooming in you can actually see the + and - symbols on the holes... :-+
