Why some cam timers have multiple motors ?

I took a look at some cam timers and wondered why they have (or seems to have) multiple motors ?
Is this for redundency ? Or to rotate the other way around ? Or to monitor the device ? (eg: detect current angle)

Have you checked the shaft rotation speeds? Sometimes they are used alternately for slow and fast parts of the cycle.
