Bench PSU functionality help needed.
« on: December 05, 2013, 01:04:05 am »
Hey guys, the user manual for my dual bench PSU only has calibration information in it, so was wondering if I could get some advice on some functionality and abbreviations?

The Buttons are: OCP, OVP, SER/INDEP, PARA/INDEP  :-//

Its a Tenma 72-10495 (2 channel 0-32V 5A, 0-32V 5A)

These abbreviations are common for power supplies and meanings/functions are:

OCP = Over Current Protection
OVP = Over Voltage Protection
SER/INDEP = Both outputs can be connected in serial or independent
PARA/INDEP = Both outputs can be connected in parallel or independent

Hope this helps.
Have a Great Day!

Thank you!

Why is there the option to disable OCP/OVP?  :-[

There are times where you don't care about how much current something under testing pulls, just that it doesn't exceed the set voltage. Similarly, there are times where you worry more about the current through a system than a voltage that is too high.

OK, I get that for OCP, i dial in the max amps I want to be pulled and can bypass this with the button............

But, how does that work with voltage? how could something pull more voltage then I have dialed in on the PSU?

I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

The only time Ive tripped OVP on a power supply when I was running a class D amplifier board with one, and we hit resonance on the seat shaker we were driving with the amp board.  The power supply cant sink any current, but driving the highly inductive load, current was coming back into the power supply, and the voltage was shooting up.   I added a load resistor drawing ~2A on each rail, and it started behaving.

Thanks for that ConKbot!

Here to learn, so really appreciate you breaking that down for me with a real world example.   :-+
