Are there any good sources for electronic components out there which don't put on excessive shipping costs (typical when I (living in Norway) order from the States where shipping is usually astronomical for some reason) or a minimum order as most of the large, but trustworthy companies out there operate with.
I've been warned enough times to stay away from eBay or similar sites if I don't want to risk fake semiconductors or capacitors, resistors with lower ratings than stated etc. In other words: I want quality, authentic components, but without the excessive additional costs.
"What you see is what you get" kind of stuff (cables, connectors etc.) is another matter and I have no problem ordering these from China via eBay.
How's Tayda for instance? I hear they're reasonably priced, but do they deliver genuine products?

Finally, I see that some of the parts I'm looking for are either obsolete or hard to get hold of these days:
7406 (TTL hex inverter)
LM78L82ACZ) (+8.2V voltage regulator)
PC-900 (opto-isolator, or better performance pin-pin compatible)

Suggestions as to where to buy these from with the above criteria?
(I couldn't find either at Tayda)

Hi, i also order Tayda for some parts.
Those ceramic capacitors are very thin & fragile, i dont buy them anymore just to be sure.
They have these grey film capacitors in exotic values, its the only shop i know with values like 27nF, 18nF, 5,6nF etc,
i would rather have Wima brand from normal shop, i need those values for cloning vintage gear.
They also have alot of nice knobs, even pink color.
Good shop for audio freaks.

Order 1 time big with all value resistors in a normal shop and pay the shipping, then you can make small exotic orders for each project.
Buy bags of 100 at least, i normally order resistors per 1000 so i can give some away also and still be cheaper.

Edit : i have the Sharp PC900 optocoupler 6 pin DIP, only i cant remember prices been so high ?

Out of these I have bought from TME and they ship almost immediately after the transfer is made. I can also say that they pack stuff appropriately no matter what the order size. But you have to buy some stuff per 100s. - like most small passive elements. I think this is what the OP does not want (no minimal order).

TME are good for toroidal mains transformers, even though they are heavy and I am in the UK, and as said above, they ship very quickly, with excellent, appropriate packaging, and with very reasonable P&P charges. But being in the UK I mostly buy from RS. Does anyone know of a reputable company that does a pack of say 1000 each preferred value 1% resistors without ordering every value independently (I am idle...) :)
Best regards,

Shipping to most of the rest of the world from the USA is ridiculously expensive, I don't know why but it isn't the fault of the dealers. That will pretty much rule out all US dealers.

That's true unfortunately, but it also goes for most other large online component dealer. Most of them ship with DHL, Fedex or other courier services whereas I'd be happy to get a padded envelope in the mail using regular postal mail services.

Added shipping costs also means added import duties/taxes (because the content value AND shipping costs are all included!).

Back in the 80s when I was building a lot I used to order from most of the well known UK dealers such as Maplin, RS, Rapid, Bonex to name a few and shipping was nothing fancy and overly expensive. Everything was better back in the good old days of course  ;)

I'm a big fan of www.arrow.com. They've shipped me $0.23 of resistors for free before, but I'm in the US. They claim to have lots of European offices so it might be worth a look to see if they're a more economic option for you.

I'm taking a guess based on my experience of selling on eBay... USPS is not that reliable and a lot of sellers (not eBay sellers in particular but small store owners) prefer to ship via UPS or FedEx for higher reliability. All the companies I have worked at never use USPS for the same reason, we always shipped parts and whatnot via UPS or FedEx. Using a better reliability service usually means less hassle... Although now that I think about it, Digikey and Mouser started using USPS (although their services are tracked)....... So I could be wrong. :-\

7406 (TTL hex inverter)
Plain TTL was obsolete decades ago; it was replaced by LS (low-power Schottky) with the same speed. So search for 74LS06.

Do you really need the high-voltage outputs? Consider replacing it with some CMOS family (HC or AC are common, AHC and LVC are more modern).

LM78L82ACZ) (+8.2V voltage regulator)
If that specific output voltage is not available, consider the LM317L.

PC-900 (opto-isolator, or better performance pin-pin compatible)
The PC900 had an unusual pinout, but it was a clone of the H11L1, which is still very common.

SN7406 is still in production.
