For further viewing on this subject, here's a video I did about speeding up the process of hand-placing SMD parts, plus a few other random SMD hints & tips
Some random hints for quick hand SMD assembly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdGSFc7VjBE#ws)

Very Nice Mike you have educated and inspired me to do more in house stuff. You showing the pick and place machine on camera and saying it takes longer to setup than make the small quantity of boards you need is invaluable information.

For FYI those in the US... I get the stencils done at www.pololu.com (http://www.pololu.com) and the paste at http://www.zeph.com/zephpaste.htm (http://www.zeph.com/zephpaste.htm)

Loved the video dave, i see youre pretty good at alighning those chips. I've always found soldering .5mm pitch ics to be easy, just the aligning the chip beforehand is difficult.

One thing I noticed that wasn't discussed was the type of fluxes ie noclean, RMA and cleaning them up. I've use RMA flux in tubes and its typically is annoying to remove. Alcohol works but you sometimes have to use a lot of it so I like to heat up the flux reside with my hot air station. This liquifies the flux at a pretty low temperature and you can just wipe it off.

Ordinary alcohol does not dissolve flux very well, however isopropyl alcohol works much better. Isopropyl alcohol is often found as a cleaning solvent for cameras, electronics and other stuff. It is mild and generally doesn't harm plastics.

I have never done SMD soldering but now think it's something I ought to try, once I can improve my kit. It looks about as I thought it would - I thought smaller pad sizes would make it more difficult.
