Yes the Youtube comment system is pretty retarded. I wonder why it's so hard for them to implement a good comment system, I mean Youtube is only one of the most viewed pages on the whole internet. You may think they have top notch web programmers, but apparently that's not the case ... uh well.

Also "woohoo" on the German/EU "Daveshop".

Cheers,
Florian

I asked them once at a partner conference, and there response is that they think the comment system is simply not worth the effort. They never really wanted, and don't like the idea. They see youtube as more of push medium than an interactive medium. And hence even adding simple like a reply button in the right place gets pushed so far down the priority list.  |O

You could consider disabling comments all together. That will filter out most of the useless comments, and people with genuine helpful comments jump over to here, so you have even more traffic here :)

+1  :-+

Also less distraction, and can really focus on serving comments that are worth replying, and with the help of the mod team to "weed" out those retarded ones rather you have to go through one by one by yourself at YT.  :-DD

If you look at the e-mail notification you get when you get a comment, there's a very nice link that highlights the comment and shows a reply text box ready to go. Why they didn't include that in the "inbox" view, I don't know, but might be worth looking at.

Don't disable comments on the videos. I can only speak for myself, but when I randomly find a video with disabled comments, I'm either thinking the person can't take criticism, or if there was a forum signup link, that the person was a bit obnoxious. In either case I would ignore that person on principle. I may be a bit extreme in this regard, but YouTube comments are great for people who found one of your videos randomly through the related video function, which I'm assuming is a lot. (Dave, you have access to these statistics.) You might argue that these comments are all useless anyway, but you can just as well let them have their fun over there. These are the people who pay part of your paycheck.
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

One time I read a well thought out, insightful, spelled and punctuated correct comment on YouTube...... Just kidding. There has never been one of those.

I do sometimes use the comments to find people who like the videos I like to find new videos that I may like.
Rare Medium Well Done

I never said the comments are useless, and I wouldn't never disable comments. Don't know where you got that idea?  :-//

I would love to see an addendum to this video where you give us a tour through your youtube analytics !!

For some reason browsing that stuff is hypnotic.

Anyone else curious enough ?

It was a response to Jeroen, who suggested it in the post two posts above mine.

The Analytics interface contains an estimate of how much ad money you've earned from each video. A YT partner is not allowed to disclose how much they earn, browsing this part of the interface might technically be a violation against the rules.

money earned ?... no; no interest on that... I though there were stats about us, the viewers... like geographical stats

On YouTube do we need to watch the full add for Dave to get the fee or is it reduced if we cancel the add at the first opportunity, i.e. 5 seconds in? I would be happy to let the full advert run if it helps.

Sure. Even so, accidentally showing this data, which is in a couple of places of the regular statistics interface, might be a violation, is what I'm getting at. I doubt YT would find out or care if they did, but I'm just pointing it out.
