I registered in January 2017 and tried to login today and I got an error "Username does not exist". So I registered again and here I am. Do usernames expire after 30 days of inactivity?
Thank you.

If you never posted, then yes you may have been swept away. its a cleanup process that occurs from time to time.
-
If your post count is zero then your account risks getting purged.
-
Interesting information!
Does "this" count as a post, so I don't have to re-register?

It does.
Welcome to the forum.
We look forward to your ongoing contributions.

Ok, this explains a lot....
I was 100% certain I registered here a few years ago as 'MrB' but none of my usual password combinations worked.
I followed the 'Forgot your password?' link but never received the email so I decided to search that username's posts.... nope, don't recognise any of those... D'oh! been re-registered by someone else.
So, if MrB happens to read this, apologies for the reset password email a while back! :palm:

I had a zero post count for a full year, could be that the purge happened just before I registered and not since.
-
I don't believe Dave runs the great purge automatically on any kind of set schedule.
I think it only gets run manually when he notices the unused account numbers going up and wants to clean up the database so it is entirely possible to have had a dormant account for a year if your timing was just right. :)

Isn't that what I just said? ;D

Does it really work like that? I would expect you would have to enter an email address, otherwise that might could be an exploit?

Nah, the other MrB has a dot after Mr and that's enough to make the difference. ;)

You can enter either an email address or a username.
For an email address it will either come back as "There are no usernames associated with that email."(which is what I kept getting) or if it is a valid address it would email to confirm the reset.
For a username, only the address registered to that username would get the email to confirm a reset. (or to ignore if it was not initiated by that user)
Not sure how/if that could be exploited. Not interested in it anyway, I was not particularly attached to MrB. A few extra letters doesn't bother me ;)

New here too. Don't delete me. I want to read a bit before I open my mouth and stick my foot in it ;D
-
Don't panic.
You've made a post, so you won't get scrapped by the default clean-up.
Reading is always a good idea, especially if you ask something that has already been addressed. If it's 10 pages back on a long thread, people won't be too worried - but it would be a little embarrassing if it was only 6 posts previous.
-
While Dave does dump zero posters after a while ( basically whenever he has time, feels like it and thinks "gee it's been a while since I did this") there is almost no reason to not do a single post on the welcome new members thread ( sticky for your convenience) to both see how the SMF works here, and gets you a single post as a bonus.
-
But, but i view every day! Not much of a poster. To busy burning things up - poof.
-
Thought it might me a good idea to say hi so I don't get deleted too.

There's an "Introduce yourself" thread which can not only serve to do that, but to share a bit about yourself if you wish...
Here's the link: New Member, Please introduce yourself (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/new-member-please-introduce-yourself/)

The never active account deletion is due to things like spambots that signup, then come back weeks/months later to post spam.
-
seems like a post is in order so I can lurk with username security
-
Hi everyone, a similar thing happened to me so I am also posting here to maintain my username. I know this is a very old thread but it seems like a good place to do it!

Zero post accounts with no logins for at least several months are purged periodically.
