Doesn't really matter where the heatsink is facing when its in an enclosed space. See DC plugpacks.

All passive cooled graphics cards and any other PC cards with passive cooling are like that. It makes cooling somewhat worse but it's not like it has nowhere to go.

Another idea would be to use a cheap Ikea Sonos and remove the electronics and upgrade to Sonos S2 
Software bricking devices is probably one of the dumbest ideas ever. There should be hangings in front of Sonos HQ.
