A tour of the shambles that is the EEVblog lab, before the big move.

So much stuff. If I got to choose one thing out of that room, I would take that 8085 kit.
-
The video got cut off at the very end ? Did the battery die?
Three questions
1) Where the heck is the bathroom? I've been wondering about this for 6 years now
2) What are you doing with the old lab space ?
3) Does the new lab have a dumpster room with free stuff?

Oops, my clip splicing didn't work. Fix will, video taken offline.

Commercial office building towers have common bathrooms on each level.
Renting old space.
Same dumpster room.

are you sure that is 50sq meters? ive seen bigger houses that are only said to be 50sq..looking at some online pics of 50sq meter apartments, they look 2-3 times bigger than the lab...
how big is the new lab?

A "square" is a strange measurement and is equivalent to 100 square feet (~9.3 square metres).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_(unit)
-
A "square" is not really a strange unit (at least I don't think so). It is an area - the area of a square 10ft by 10ft - which is something you can reasonably imagine. It has been in common usage for domestic dwellings for many decades - and while square metres is becoming more prevalent, the old "square" is still used.
What is funny as hell, though, is when you have someone preparing a listing for a 15 square house and they "correct" the measurement ... to 15 square metres.
-
Hooray for a unit that looks like someone forgot the unit.

Squares are not used in commercial realestate.
-
When I say it is a strange unit, I mean doesn't actually specify any actual units - you have to know it refers to multiples of 100 sq.ft.
And this is shown in the post above, where WacKEDmaN conflates squares with square metres. And also in your example.
My dad was in the building industry when I was a lad, so I knew what it meant - but I generally would avoid it as a meaurement.

in my 40 trips around the sun, ive only ever known area as square meters...(or cm^2, m^2..km^2 etc)..never knew about a square unit..sounds very imperial! guess ya learn something new every day!
i guess the wiki says it was used here historically coz we were once under the imperial system..

Yep, I reckon you're probably about 10 years too young to have heard it in common usage.

I'll wrestle you for it. I've been looking for one of those for a long time but they always go for crazy money on eBay. I think I have an 8085 laying around and some support bits, I guess I could just build my own similar thing. I like that Intel kit because it reminds me of my first computer, which I still have. Similar design, simple hex keypad and some LED displays for address and data, and a fairly simple ROM monitor.

So does the formula for ohms per square apply here? :D

Isn't that defined in furlongs per hundredweights?

Never seen used here, Meters or to a lessor extent Feet. What I can't get over is flooring (carpet, tiles etc) companies often still using Sq Yards.
Are you lining up at Dave's door for first pickings. Surely SYMBO can't complain if you get it for free (especially if she never sees it)?

I would buy that "fixed" fluke handheld. I have chargers, batteries, leads, a case etc... haha.

It's still in common use today in roofing.

Searching domain for "squares" I get 665 hits on listings:

Yes - I've never heard it used for commercial properties. It was always (thousands of) square feet. Nowadays it's square metres. "Squares" was a purely domestic property thing.

Just watched the video.
I just cracked up when Dave was talking about the new digs and said: "It'll have more open floor area".
Is anyone running a pool on how long that will last?
-
Yipeeee, that's my muArt down on the floor amongst the mailbag at 5:40 :D
@Dave: Let me know if you have any questions for when you take a look at it.

At first it may not appear to be a big deal but that's how my move looked until I got stuck into it and it was a nightmare that took ages to do since you can't just throw a lot of fragile gear in the back of a van. It has to be packed properly. But since it is only being transported a short distance can I suggest that you borrow a couple of shopping trolleys to help you out ;)
cheers

I didn't see your Pace station anywhere, surely there's a place for it? (especially when there's a boat-load of tips too).
