Dave , you could have used a section of  a paper clip, to  reinforce  the connector   where it was broken

I saw  the still  video  picture of the television   and thought it was going to be another capacitor gone  bad  on the power  supply board

I wish they would design those headphone jacks to mount to the case, thus none of the stress is placed on main body of the connector or the solder joints.

Beyond that, for headphones, if you have not tried the ones that seal really well and block ambient sound, you should try some of the new ones that are fully wireless and low profile, you can wear them within basic over the ear NRR30+ hearing protection, or even larger electronic earmuffs and just turn the ambient sound passthrough up a little higher, then wear the earbuds under it, and you will get an extra 3-5 dB of sound attenuation which is good when you are at the range.

Furthermore, most rifles above a ~.22 caliber, will be at over 160dB and need double protection anyway.

If you go to the range regularly, give the in-ear earbuds another try, and compare the experience and performance to the standard foam earplugs + over the ear electronic earmuffs. The good ones should give a similar amount of attenuation, but with the added benefit of you being able to listen to a podcast or audio book while trying to get that sub MOA grouping.

I'd have drilled a hole and installed a connector in a more accessible place.  The real cause of the fault is pain in the arse access to connectors means you leave the headphones plugged in.
Who wants small children reaching around to the back of a big screen TV. I wouldn't want any tripping hazards where kids might have a TV fall on them. Maybe there needs to be a follow up video where you install a socket on the soundbar.

If you do not mind the drilling of a larger hole, you could get the panel mount locking TRS jacks, and then solder wires to the PCB.

That solution makes it so that the headphone plug will break before anything in the TV is damaged.

It's the side of the TV, easily accessible, and they mostly stay pluged in.
Zero chance of that headphone lead tipping over the TV.

We've used a pair of low-end Sennheiser wireless headphones for years now to eliminate the cord completely.  They sit on their charging stand when not in use, and use a pair of replaceable rechargable AAs.  Model RS 120.  For us, using a corded headset was always a pain in the ass.

Perhaps you can find one in a dumpster, lol.  :)

Ear buds that seal.....   Hell yes.   Exactly what you want for In Ear Monitors when you have drummer heavy on the brass on one side and guitar play with 4x12 cabinet on the other and you need to protect your ears yet hear clearly the monitor feed.

For real sealing, blocking sound and my better low end response get a set of custom ear molds.

Yes, this is Australia and Dave's reaction will be repeated by just about anyone who hasn't watched some of those US crime shows that show gun ranges.

Ask a typical Aussie if they know where their nearest gun range is - and you'll get anything from a blank look to an apprehensive "Why?" ... but they won't know where one is.

Use a 90 degree angle headphone adapter or small extension chord with the end secured at the base level of the TV.  This might help prevent damage the next time the accident happens as any pull downwards will just unplug the headphones instead of breaking the jack in the TV.

I only use them for one the go or on-camera talking head commentary shots. For TV and other monitoring it's full headphones.

I never found a set that sat in my ears properly nor felt comfortable, so I have just avoided using them altogether.  The ones in the iPhone 4 I sent you have never been unwrapped.

I just use regular headphones on everything - and have done for years.

I laughed like a drain when I saw full headphones come back in as "fashionable" after the earbud rage had run its course and manufacturers were looking for the new "thing".  Seems I was ahead of the trend!

I've had no issue, no idea what you are talking about with "oreo".
Mine is not an Android based one FYI.

I find headphones with glasses really annoying, so earbuds are great for long stints at the monitor.

It's as bad as trying to find replacement USB sockets, actually, probably worse, because at least with USB sockets there's some sort of mechanical pinout consistency (just not with the mounting).

I've spent days on places like Alibaba looking for matches for things like this in the past.

Admitingly, I'd likely have gone in with the hot-air / Quick and removed the lot only to regret it later and then have to dead-bug a replacement socket.

Nice job :)

Hell no.

If you want to listen on a bus (or other noisy environment) then there's not much choice. The loose fitting ones let all the background noise in.

Hello Dave,

Look at the sony website for your TV it looks like there is a firmware upgdate labled as "software update for enhanced security", Wonder what thats all about.

I am sure you have tried, but if you know the manufacture of the headphone socket then you can go to thier website and the datasheet/catalogue normally has many variants and from this you can find the odd ballparts. Then you will have a manufactures part number to search with. But I think you apprach was the cheapest/quickest thing to do.

Hope the lab is back in action soon.

Dave,
On all my home audio & video stuff I have a short 3.5 mm extension pigtail plugged into the headphone jack, secured with a little hot melt glue. Plug the headphones into the pigtail and no stress re. tripping over the headphone lead. It unplugs from the pigtail if tugged.

I also use a similar solution on the power jack of my laptop. No worries about sending the laptop flying off the coffee table if I snag the power cord.

Forget about securing the jack or finding a beefier type.

Just pigtail it!!
