That super speed car is kind of what turned me off to slot cars. I mean, it barely even looks like a car - the front wheels don't even tough the track.
I had HO scale slot cars as a kid (still was more interested in trains though) - those cars almost all looked like or were modeled after real cars. There were a few fantasy type things, along the lines of Hot Wheels cars. I then discovered the old slot magazines from when my Dad was in the hobby a bit back in the early to mid 60's when it was a really hot thing. The larger scale cars, 1/32 and 1/24, generally all looked like real cars. In fact they sometimes had concurs events where the car was judged on the modeling accuracy, not how fast it went on the track - but then they were raced, too. One of the magazines had an article on adapting a regular plastic model kit to slot car chassis - so I did that with one of mine. I had a track - my Dad had a 1/32 Scalectrix set which I was able to get working, way more fun than my HO cars. But even that became boring to me after a while. The hobby shop I used to go to put in an HO slot track, I took some of my cars and ran them, but was soon put off by people bringing the latest types which had all sorts of extra strong magnets to help them stick to the track, my older style cars couldn't compete. I had to slow down on the turns, half these guys were able to just mash the controller and go. For a while there was one brand that made the track so that it went vertically up a wall, and the cars would stay on the track!
I had more fun a little later with the HO scale US1 Electric Trucking stuff I got. This had controls to allow you to drive forward and reverse, and the trucks had 2 guide pins so they could run backwards. Various operating accessories worked by backing up to the device and the powered wheels of the truck would turn gears that made things happen. hey had a one-way pawl in them so when you went forward, you would pull out of the loading dock or whatever it was. The track had turnouts like train tracks, so you could run in different routes.
Even that though, eventually I got tired of it and went back to and stayed with model trains where I still spend my time all these years later.
