Normally with those cheap laptops, it's either the Super I/O chip or the MOSFET's in the front end of the motherboard board power supply that switches between a battery and the charger brick Or you can try replacing that inductor !
What's that adapter assortment that Dave uses? I'd like to get one!

I agree with you that's a real nice set
the 121gw app is a reasonable replacement for the Paul Daniels app.

Didn't think of that, d'oh!
Can add a bluetooth dongle to the capture PC.
Got an S50, visually identical but with a 5th gen Core and a whimpy AMD discrete GPU. Worst. Thermal. Design. Ever.

It's not that it throttles. It's that it doesn't throttle enough. That it constantly runs the GPU @ 100C is terrible already, that it shuts down when playing a game is just unacceptable.
Yes, the fan is clean. The laptop is raised, vents completely free for free airflow. Still craps out. And then it's locked untill you take out the battery and power plug. Unresponsive otherwise. That was a fun moment, when I hadn't figured that out yet.

If you want it to be on top always, you can use
turbotop (freeware, not mine, there are other options too) to set the 121GW window always on top.
I don't know about the S40-B because I couldn't find the info, but the S40-A cross-references to a Compal OEM, LA-9863P, for which it's easy to find a schematic --- and that one has nothing but a 7A fuse and two ferrite beads on the input.

Thanks for you answer.
That coil is used to implement a EMI differential mode filter and that is what I wanted to know.
When you say "bridge it over with a link" at
11:22 in on the video, does that mean bypass (short the) component out, or replace the inductor with something else? If "link" means "something else" in this case, what would be that something else?

Short it out, with a link of copper wire or 0 ohm resistor.
Metal. Haahhhahaha! Pretty sure they would have made the heatsink and radiator in plastic if they could.
Seriously, no mettal to be found on the bottom. Or top.
Dear Mr. Dave
Why not make a "Backup" and try to find the owner of the Laptop?
Maybe the would need some of there Data back?
Thanks
That's not inductor but ferrite bead. That's why you did not find inductor with adequate current rating in suitable package size.

They dumped it. That's a sign of how much they need the data.
Some people dont know how easy is to fix somethink. So the toss it away.
Since Dave dont say its from residential or business we can guess if the use a backup or not.

Planned obsolescence taken to an entirely new level!
Never actually considered a bad heatpipe
Still should throttle rather than burn itself into oblivion, though...
It shuts down due to overheat protection, not burn. It's normal operating temperature should be something like up to 95
oC where it throttles. You cannot throttle down to level of idle heat dissipation when game is running.

It doesn't throttle, or at least not significantly. That's the whole point. And it doesn't allow access to any of the tweaking tools out there. Otherwise, I'd reduce the clocks myself. Only thing that works is unplug the adapter, after which it runs at much lower clocks. Think I'll be going Renoir once 17" laptops with it become available
