When those VFDs dim with age they usually do so very unevenly, according to which segments have been most heavily used. That display just looks generally dim, like the heater voltage might still not be quite right.

hit that DIMMER button on the front panel. see if the display is not set to low level.

Actually I've had similar problem with my Onkyo (newer model). Relay off after turning it on, or turning off during increasing volume. Tried to search for schematics - 0 points. Than, before trying to open it, I've roamed thru net and YT. Found some folks talking about heating from outside prior and during turning on, left side from top of receiver with hair dryer for 3-5 min on max temp! Well... what's the worse it can happen right? Guess what? It worked. Dunno how, but that receiver is happily buzin' last 4 yrs without a single issue

Yep, I realised this and it works fine, it was on the lowest setting

At least you had the schematics. Used to be that pretty much everything had schematics either included or available.
Then consumer stuff slipped (radio, TV, appliances) and now even professional equipment.
Now manufacturers are trying even harder to make the stuff unrepairable on purpose.
Next trend is although you bought it it's not really yours either.

Love it. The "repair" videos are consistently among my favourites. I feel like a learn a TON for watching an experienced guy like Dave to through the troubleshooting / debugging process on something like this. These make a great complement to the various "theory" related books/videos/classes and suchlike that I study. 

That said, I'd love to see more of the "Fundamentals Friday" and more tutorial / basics oriented stuff on EEVBlog as well. It seems like there hasn't been as much of that stuff lately.

about the resistor variation shown in 1:30, i have seen The Yamaha AS501 Service manual specifying polypropylene film cap for japanese variant and mylar cap (higher harmonic distortion ) for other variants (C328,335-336)

I stop buying Yamaha after reading this.

I have the TX-SR-608 that was purchased on auction site and the remote did not work so I popped it apart and found 1 electrolytic on the board. I found suitable replacement from junk pile and has worked well for about 4 years now.
Thanks for the repair walkthrough they are also my favorite to watch.

Hello Dave, I am new to the repair of electronic devices. I would have liked to know how can I measure the voltage -35V at the level of -VP.
