<Mini Rant>
I think a lot of the mistakes startups make are related to not taking the opinion of their engineers seriously.
Business people (or non-engineering types in general) tend not to understand just how critical the engineers at the company are and how important it is to listen to what they say.
For the vast majority of small to medium businesses the engineers are the only people in the company who could actually run the entire company alone if everyone else left.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that engineers would be 'good' at marketing or graphic design or sales or managing or HR or finance, or that they would want to do it, just that they 'could' do it.
No one else at the company would have a hope in hell of being able to do the job of the engineers.
