« on: September 17, 2024, 06:14:58 am »
Looking at a gorgeous vintage Beckman Panaplex Planar Electroluminescent Neon Display technology from the 1970's.
Extract from a mailbag video.

Electroluminescent displays are actually something different, more akin to OLEDs. Lumineq made them (for very much money) until last year.
Panaplex use glow discharge, like Nixies.

Yes, strictly they're planar Neon plasma displays, not electroluminescent.

They were originally developed by Sperry, then passed to Beckman and eventually Babcock.
Best Regards, Chris

Over a decade ago I got the last Vishay/Dale PD-16A070-4 from Mouser and still have to build a driver board for it. Quite hard to drive!

Also Burroughs, apparently.  Dale made similar displays but didn't call them Panaplex.

They look great when they work, but they do tend to start flickering with age.  I don't think the seals were very reliable compared to Nixies.
