EEVBLOG #18
« on: August 22, 2013, 03:14:27 am »
I'm going through the old videos and I saw Dave's comments about the eTrex GPS being on the market for so many years. Well Dave, if you were impressed by how long that piece of consumer gear was on the market, take a look at the Sony ICF-2010 shortwave receiver. Sony finally quite selling it several years ago, but it had a run of almost 20 years. I suspect that is a record for consumer electronics.

For a relatively affordable, portable SW receiver, it was simply the best one for all those years. I had one that I bought in 1986 and loved it. I finally sold it just last year, since there hasn't been much to listen to on SW for some time.

The Hitachi SB-75 belt sander has been around at least 20 years, probably 25+
And its still for sale.

It's funny seeing it on the shelf at the hardware store next to all the modern designs

I don't think a belt sander qualifies as consumer electronics  :)

It we broaden the criteria to all class of products, there are some items that have been around for generations (Ivory soap comes to mind, for one).

Sure it is, lots of consumer have a belt sander in their shed/home.
Granted, it's less common than a drill, but even so.
