EEVBLOG #220 Kindle Fire Review
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:40:36 pm »
I picked up my Kindle Fire yesterday, Nov 25, and wouldn't you know it, Dave has done a review.  I have been using is for a few hours yesteday and today and I have to say it seems to be a bit quirky but maybe I just need to figure it out.  I am in Canada so no Kindle Fire here but I had mine shipped to a nearby US postal address.  I have the same problem with trying to buy anything, No Go at this time.  If I could have bought a few things I would have so it does seem like a poor idea to not have every place up and running but I guess they wanted to rush this out for Christmas and there just was not enough time to get every country operational.  I am going to San Diego for two weeks at Christmas so it will be interresting to see if it lets me buy stuff while down there.  Basically all I can use it for is Web browsing which is actually what I had in mind, something bigger than my Blackberry but smaller and easier to use than my laptop.  Web browsing seems pretty fast and I have not had a problem with signal strength in several locations including my brother's detached garage which gets a signal from the house.
I watched three EEVBlog videos yesterday and they played very well except the first time I tried the unit totally locked up.  I could not get it to respond to any taps anywhere.  I had to hold down the power button to shut it off.  When I turned it back on everything was fine.  Another strange thing it was doing is going from a web page I was viewing back to the home page.  I then had to tap on the page to open it up again but it went back to home page after a few seconds.  Closing the page and starting over again stopped this behavior.  At first I could not figure out how to search in the Oxford Dictionary, not that I plan to do that much, but eventually noticed the magnifying glass in the bottom right corner.  It seems to search really slowly though.  You would thing there would be a setting to slow down that carosel?  So far I'm not dissapointed as it does browse the web quite well.  Eventually I expect to be able to buy stuff and I may go for some music and apps.
Interested to hear what others have experienced.
cheers,
Gordon
