DS1052E as Serial Object
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:32:15 pm »
Hi all,

Is it possible to make PC recognize DS1052E as serial com object ? Some vendors provide drivers for this but didn't come across for Rigol.

The DS1052E is LXI compatible and you can manipulate it with VISA librariues from NI. Alternatively to using LabView, Rigol makes their own application for communicating with their devices called UltraSigma. The programming commands  can be found in the datasheet for your scope.

As for raw serial comminication, I can't see why it wouldn't work. There is a serial port on the device, and the hack, made popular on this website, to convert the DS1052E -> DS1102E was origonally done using a com terminal. Were you looking to connect the device from its RS232 port, or did you want a USB-to-serial type thing like what you'd get with a FTDI chip?

I intend to use the usb interface for a serial connection like they did with an Instek here ;

There is a 5.5mb download at the top-right of the page, there is a pdf file inside the archive and it seems that they can introduce the DSO as a serial object. I would like to achieve this because I had already written the script for serial data acquisition. To do this over USBTMC I need to rewrite the code - which seems that I have to in case I can't find a similar workaround as above.

Why don't you just use a $10 USB to RS-232 adapter? I think the Rigol outputs waveform data via RS-232. If it doesn't,  you are on your own.
