EEVBlog #258, Power supply #11
« on: March 14, 2012, 05:45:22 am »
OK, not that the final details are out, which should have been announced from the start, I want to buy one. A portable power supply is just the thing that I could use, not another ho-hum bench unit. Why didn't you come clean with this earlier Dave?

Dave gave the secret away two months ago. At least two of us noticed at the time.

It wasn't supposed to be a secret, I just started out doing the videos and simply hadn't got around to mentioning the battery charging part yet. Many people started speculating about things, so it seems kinda fun to hold out for a while  :P

And it was also fairly obvious when I posted video of the early PSU board in late Jan. One of the connectors is labelled "BATT"  ;D

Great idea, love it.

Eagerly waiting to watch the next video on how you decide which switching chip that you're going to use as the pre-regulator, since there are so many choices of it out there, its the reasoning and consideration on the technical and economic/price aspects this really sparks my curiosity.

You're killing us Dave, c'mon, upload the next one please !  :P

Dunno why, currently I'm imagining that someone in the future will definitely come up with a mod for this psu with an external  wireless module using wifi or bluetooth module for controlling the psu remotely ! Talking about an extreme galvanic isolation from the psu.  :)

Uploading now.
Although it's an hour long, I did manage to skip the actual selection of the DC-DC converter!  ???
There is some talk on what the chosen one suitable though.
But I've done selection videos before, and it could take a 30min video to select just that one part  :o

Loved the video - but not a fan of the batteries.  With that said, I think it's really interesting - and very cool to see the design changes, and I'm sure that it will fill a unique niche.

I think the rev b is more what I was hoping for.  Just my 2 cents.

You can simply leave them out.

OK, I guess I missed these clues, but I don't follow every post in every thread! Until I was faced with the detail of it being battery powered in an obvious way it seemed like maybe just another power supply with some different control schemes. Now that it has an obvious difference and more utility I am more interested.

Thanks for pointing out the RM series enclosures, Dave! Since they were listed in the "more enclosures" section, I completely over looked them while browsing Hammond's website for potential enclosure candidates. The RM2015S will serve perfectly for a project I'm working on. ;D

Have a design question Dave?

you talked about putting the LCD on its on PCB but as I understood the video it was only going to be as big as the LCD. Are you planning on making the whole front panel a pcb like in your micro current design? If not then what is going to cover the rest of the front and why?

I don't think he can make the front panel the LCD board, unless he changes the encoders and switches.  It was going to plug in behind the switches.

That was the way I understood it, but he could make it where the switches are mounted on the front PCB, or choose a different switch, and let the encoder shafts poke through. I don't know. I am just curious why or why not that may be a good design idea.

It will just be a normal front panel, either made from PCB or silkscreened panel.
It would be too ugly to put the LCD actually on the front panel.

Maybe a stupid question

If you're going to make a portable power supply, why not put it in a multimeter enclosure?

That would be connections at the bottom, potmeters in the middle and display at the top.

This way if you would stand it on a support or use the flip out support (if possible or affordable), the wires would not be in front of the controls and while operating the controls, your hand would not be in front of the display.

For some reason it seems like 42 is the answer to every posting question.

It may not directly apply to the power supply, but between this and the constant current load project, I have learned a new appreciation and understanding for the op-amp in general.

Thanks a LOT, Dave. You ROCK!
