Downloading Dave's mp4 or rather not being able too.
« on: August 28, 2012, 03:49:44 pm »
Is is me or are other people experiencing the problem of not being able to download Dave's video. I am using Google chrome and when I click the download button I get another page that is labeled "untitled" and nothing happens it is as if Google have put a block on downloading video as the links work with Firefox. I have to download as my internet speed is a bit low owing to nearly 3.5 miles of copper wire being in the way.

I believe this is just Chrome trying to play the video file, and waiting for it to buffer. Try right clicking the link and choose save link as.
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

So they broke Chrome again, I used to be able to grab any video of the screen using real player but that also no longer works as do all the other such programs and extensions that I have tried it would seem that Google now has a policy to stop downloading video especially from you tube.

You're talking about two different things. YouTube tries somewhat to stop you from downloading videos, but that protection is full of holes. Try for example http://offliberty.com/ or http://keepvid.com/ or http://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/ (for running on your computer)

But the link you're talking about is just a link to a file. Chrome tries to be smart and play it for you when you click it, just like it tries to be smart when you click a PDF link and show the document in the browser. That has nothing to do with any kind of protection.

It was definitely broken or blocked just as mysteriously as the downloading was stopped it has started again, I did do a Google search and it seems that I was not alone, I cant help but think that the problem had something to do with the Olympics as the downloading was stopped shortly after they began and started again a couple of weeks after they ended. I also got a notification from one of the video down-loaders that there was a compatibility problem with the latest Chrome and Firefox and they hoped to fix the problem shortly.

Did you try my original advice back when I wrote? Ie to right click the video link in the blog post and choose save as. This worked for me at the time.

With Chrome, I use Chrome YouTube Downloader 2.6.10.  It works so far for all videos on youtube.
