EEVblog #428 - Wyong Field Day 2013
« on: February 24, 2013, 04:42:05 pm »
You say it rained cats and dogs down there?  Up here in the northern hemisphere it rains dogs and cats.

Looks like hamfests are about the same everywhere.  A lot of overpriced ancient stuff mixed in with a few bargains.  They're occasionally a good place to find great deals on HV components.

What in the heck was that mud caked boat anchor hardware those kids were lugging out?  I'd have asked them what it was and what the heck they were planning to use it for.  Its copper scrap value?

Dave, if it has a microphone connector it is not a receiver but a transceiver  ;)

It is a shame that all the good shows are over in the Eastern States. Hardly anything here in West Aus  :--.

Hey Dave,

Have you ever been involved in amateur radio much? I'm only asking because as an EE you would be a natural fit.

I only really got interested in EE as a hobby because of ham radio in the past 3 years or so, not to mention your great YouTube videos!  :-+

Wish I had learned more about EE when back in my twentes, it would have changed my thoughts on higher math and possibly an interest in getting a college degree.

Who knows, still might, I just don't soak up the knowledge nearly as fast now that I'm on the doorstep of being 40.

Keep up the blog and videos!
Shawn

Hey Dave,
Have you ever been involved in amateur radio much?

Nope, not at all.

There are countless things an EE is a natural fit for!

Thanks for the grand tour Dave , I was going to go to go but the bad weather and my bad Knees did not feel up to it.
The attendance certainly seemed sparse to what I usually have seen, you would not have room to swing your camera normally.
It is a pity they do not run it twice a year an extra one in the cooler months, I am sure they would have a good turnout for both.
I noted as your self that the age group tended to be on the elderly side, I hope this is not a sign of our new education system going wrong.
 Thanks again.

yikes. those scopes are $$$. a 2465b is typically around 200 to 300$ ... if you have one and want to sell it to a instrument dealer they give you max 100$ for it...

Some experiences are apparently universal - your video of the "field day" looks just like the ham radio "swap and shops" or tailgate meetings here in the USA.

In the world of US ham radio, Field Day has a different meaning, as it is the annual event (in June) where you  take the equipment out to a  temporary location and conduct operations for 24 hours with (preferably) generator or battery power to simulate an emergency condition.

Welcome to Australia. The US would have (literally) 100 times the universities, government departments, and high tech businesses that Oz does, hence this stuff is not as common and more expensive here. Over there you can buy them by the pallet load.

Yeah same here, except here in Canada (at least the ones I've been to) the participants are older, fatter and not near as clean :)
We have more overpriced used gear and no-where near the new stuff I saw in the video.

As for the Scope prices, I probably would have taken the first one for $300 :)
