What battery would be used in the usb power supply?
« on: March 29, 2013, 06:19:17 am »
As the title said.. I think Dave mentioned that he would use something like the 20C-discharge pilo pack for the PSU, but, when checking the project page(the µSupply) for any update, I see "Powered from 2 x 18650 Lithium Ion cells."  Actually, I do prefer 18650 more than lipo pack, unless Dave would implement something like a "flat clip" to hold the taps of the the battery pack instead of soldering, so changing/replacing battery wouldn't be a hassle...(yeah, lipo pack is much safer, but changing/replacing a lipo pack can really be a hassle, soldering/de-soldering, taping, padding, etc....)

Anyway, I know the thing wouldn't be available soon as Dave said during the recent live contest video...just wondering...

PS: if the info in the uSupply page is still right, then 2x18650 really doesn't seem good..I mean..the capacity...4~6 would be nicer, or maybe just fill up the space of the case lol~

PS2: this is my first post..and I somehow clicked the "Request another image" button....ouch..it refreshes the whole page rather than just the image....Well, I did copied before hitting any button as I know such things can happen... :phew:

I fly RC helis and the LiPo packs I use all typically have dean/T plugs, making replacement a snap.  Indeed, I'd use my high-perfomance charger meaning a complete recharge can happen in about 20min. Glad to hear others interested intthe uSupply, would be awesome for beginners and/or people desiring very low ripple.

Oh yeah, thanks for bringing up that, that would be perfect, though Dave might need to work around for fitting the odd shape of the plug into the PSU  ;D

I use my hobby charger for most of my batteries too as I can set the parameters how I want, though I lower the charging current most of the times to lengthen the life cycle.

I too was wondering about that.  I was thinking about cost and availability. I see what I think are high capacity (2000+ mAh) cell phone batteries for under 5 USD.  I don't know if the prize is worth the chase to make the battery easily changeable in the field.

I was thinking that a MASS produced battery, such as a replacement batteries for iPhone, iPod, GPS or something, would have the best availability and price.  However, I could be wrong in that assumption.

RC LiPo's are also massproduced and you can get a good 2200mAh for less than US $10. Unlike the cellphone/tablet batteries, these would also allow higher discharge currents. Most are long slender sticks; I would simply construct a channel behind the casing, where the LiPo is attached with a wide band of velcro or so.
