I would have killed to be in Sagan's position... At his age (perhaps a year or two older), I was similarly fascinated by electronics, and I loved to take stuff apart, but I just didn't have any resources or knowledgeable adults to help me develop further. It's great to see a kid enjoy his environment so much and take such an interest in the world around him, even if he doesn't get into electronics later on (though I highly suspect he will )

I think there were two main reasons for so much dislike but I'll tell them all:
- misinterpretation of that god thing and the usa. Btw, you'd have a better chance of running for president there as a muslim than as an atheist, so the polls say
- Sagan though cute distracting for people coming to see electronics stuff. I was raised with a different education (might be wrong) and I would not be allowed to do such stuff
- crackdown on smokers. That thumbs down was really unneeded, people got your first message anyway. If it was something else happening to someone else, you would have said: "Grow up, don't be such a baby"
- really expensive equipment being torn down by a kid without even being tested. Yes, I know that's the motto and also that no devices were hurt, but it's hard to judge on the other side of the tubes
- crackdown on cat lovers

Just saying what I saw wrong with the video. Btw, having a lot of dislikes does (should) not affect your income and they might actually drive the viewership up. It's only sad when subscribers are lost.

I suspect it's the gaming fanboys, for me being stupid and not recognising the obvious "value" in those high end components, and ultimately not doing anything with them in the video.

I'm generally not a fan of kids. If I wasn't an EEVBlog fan, I'd probably find this video annoying.  To perhaps add insult to injury, I like cats. Maybe I would sympathize with their  plans to take over the world.

At around 29 mark (showing the back side of the home made plasma board) I actually thought the drawn line on the top left part of the board was a long crack. :/

The plasma speaker reminds me of a different but similar technology, the flame speaker, of 1968 vintage. Instead of using a high voltage to generate a plasma arc to be able to whack some electrons through the air, they were using a acetylene flame "seeded", as they called it, with salts. The addition of salt got the impedance down from ~1M to 2.5k. Brilliant. Someone ought to try and build one. Comes with a simple schematic. All you need is 500V DC supply, audio amplifier, 25:1 transformer, suitable electrodes and an acetylene torch.

Not your misinterpretation but 'theirs'. You said something along the lines 'nothing of that god bullshit' - I knew you were referring to all the slogans peppered everywhere with "In God We Trust". Even though I'm against ANY religion, especially when being spoon-fed to children, your remark seemed offensive to me. I believe in complete freedom, including religious one, and Australia and NZ are among the most tolerant countries in the world.
I guess from the comments the Vermont guys also got offended but that was a completely innocent joke.

Regarding smoke, I am a smoker but I don't smoke anywhere near my bed, equipment, food, in anyone's face or generally where a lot of non-smokers are present. I also hate the smell but it is a good way to socialize almost everywhere in Europe. If I happen to receive something reeking of smoke I let it sit outside for two weeks or give it a good wash.
That's me defending myself from what I interpreted as an overreaction. Remember when smoking was allowed everywhere? I would hate to live in those days, but everything now seems to be falling in the other extreme.

I remember those days (smoking in planes and buses and trains - ARGH!!), and I am glad they are over. Vermonters would probably be miffed at your remarks because despite their lower volume of production their syrup is generally produced to the high quality end of the maple syrup market.

1) Freedom to believe does not freedom from criticism, or even offence. It might be a personal virtue to not offend, but it should not be morally required.
2) Freedom to believe does not mean freedom for the state to endorse religion, and a public motto is of course (even if a soft) state endorsement of religion.

Rather surprised at the amount of folk having a hernia about the video card & screwdriver - especially considering the audience! I don't know why they're so worried about the bloody fan on the card when you've clearly been sent that stuff with the expectation of taking off the stock HS & fan and water-cooling it. Those 120mm fans btw are supposed to attach to the radiator! It's a pain in the arse installing a water cooling system - but with the thermal capacity of that bad boy you should be able to push the card to the limit (depending on the silicone of course!).

The plasma speaker reminds me of an undergrad analytical chemistry (yes abbreviated anal chem) course, called instrumental analysis. Half of it as taught by a guy who designed instruments. We joked his half of the class was titled "How to take over a 3rd world country via chemistry" Anyways, he talked about making plasma balls in microwaves (he said panasonic microwaves worked the best) and using the plasma ball as a 3-d speaker. He said during x-mas time they would blare x-mas carols at night and that you could easily hear them on all 9 floors of the building.

They used a vacuum tube RF oscillator (similar to a TV flyback circuit) to produce the high voltage arc. They used a long horn arrangement to achieve the desired SPL.

btw the stock cooler on the card was replaced with the water block i bet, looking at those noctua fans and the dust layer it must run for years without cleaning, the card runs hot around 7-80celsius on the stock cooler and damn noisy thats why the water cooling kit is included the gpu block is nickel plated copper, for the fans those mounts to the radiator and very silent while moving decent amount of air, as for your son, i hope you will teach him not to scrape expensive parts with a screw driver, apart from this thumbs up for you to teach him to behave like he does, my cousin still drops everything if he loses intrest in it and he is like 6 years old now

yeah, the card was used with the water, but not because of noise; because there were several of them and they blocked each others fan intakes.

exactly, i understand Dave may have no interest in this or use, i sent the video card for trying in his new build, the water block too because what use do i have for it without the card, and other stuff so if he did want to use it, he could.

When you were playing with that plasma speaker, you should have clipped the ends of those solid core wires at an angle, so you would have pointy tips. That would easily increase the spark length, as electric fields are much stronger on pointy objects (that's why lightning often hits pointy antennas during thunderstorms).

I have kids of my own, but do agree that watching someone else's kids for any length of time is not interesting.  I skipped most of that video as I watch them for the technical content mostly.  This is just my opinion of course, but feedback none the less.

In the last few months I watched all your videos, They are brilliant and Its a privilege to watch them. Many thanks.

There are many positive things to say about this one, #460, but it also triggers a lot of negative emotions, by far the most of all your videos.

-Seeing Sagan standing on a 1m high bench worry's me and gives me a bad feeling.
-The proximity of Sagan's Hand to your knife when you open one of the boxes almost made me mad.

I'm sure many of your viewers who are daddy's like myself will at least partly feel the same.

-The poking with a screw driver on the video card also annoyed me. I related to the soul that send you this and probably loved that card when it was part of his PC. He must have been very disappointed...I now I would be.

Consider it feedback. I hope you do not take this the wrong way.

Further more as to why so many thumbs down ?
A lot of your viewer are smokers, love cats and Gods.
Maybe something to keep in mind when you edit, I see humor in the remarks, many may not.

I don't think 9/11 was an inside job. The US government couldn't piss up a flag pole without screwing it up.

There was absolutely no damage to the card, so any people crying over that are just being silly.

A lot of your viewer are smokers, love cats and Gods.

It had nothing to do with smokers, cats, or imaginary friends. It was the silly computer fanboys.

Maybe something to keep in mind when you edit, I see humor in the remarks, many may not.

If you were a video blogger you'd understand that everything you do and say will always piss off someone, guaranteed.

I wasn't gonna post but it's driving me mad all the negative comments.

The people making the negative comments are what's wrong with kids today.

All the don't touch anti-bacteria anti-viral anti-outside treatment is
what's wrong.

When I was young you got a cold there wasn't any trip to the doctor
for anti- biotics(which don't work any way).
You just ride it out.

As a child we went outside and played I've been cut,skinned up,
bit by snakes,spiders, stung by
wasp,bees and I'm fine.

Parents would slap a band-aid on it
and send back out into the wild.
Go back outside and play.


I haven't been sick with anything
but one cold in the last 8 to 10 years.
I attribute that to not being codled as a child.

I was probably 8 when my grandfather fave me my first knife.
Only words I remember hearing where don't cut yourself.

No learning institution will ever be able to compete with experience and time far better teachers.

Daves area, Daves  blog and Daves rules. plus his son, and he is looking out for him. I broke plenty of stuff when young, and played in the river ( bilharzia......) along with playing in the bush, up trees ( and syringias to boot, poisonous as well as incredibly weak) and all over. No broken bones, never got bitten by the black mambas in the bottom of the yard, had dogs, cats, pigeons and other assorted animals. Only broke bones later on.........

One of the YouTube commenters expressed the same sentiments.   Dave replied it was a video with Sagan, or none at all.   The commenter replied that he or she would prefer no video.

That doesn't make any sense.   If you don't want to watch, then don't - it will be exactly as if Dave hadn't made it.   Those who don't mind can watch and enjoy.

I skipped through the video (looking for the plasma speaker) as the Sagan parts didn't interest me, but didn't give it a thumbs up or down.

Will I watch more of Dave's videos?  Yes, of course.  Will I skip though some of them?  More than likely if the content (Sagan, technical or other) doesn't interest me.  It's pretty simple; if you don't like the content, skip or stop the video.

By the way, I'm sure Sagan was perfectly safe up on the bench and the camera would have been quickly dropped if he was about to come to any harm.

it's all about opinions and everyones need to force theirs on someone else if they aren't the same as yours.

It comes back to if your not living the way I think you should be then its wrong and it needs to be changed.

Everyone needs to grow up and stop trying to control everyone else.

As far as Sagan is concerned I'm glad to see someone trying to include their child in their life.
Not just putting them in daycare,
a playpen or something and forgetting about them till whatever they are doing is done.

Maybe I'm to old to rap my head around not taking responsibility for my own life and letting
someone else tell me how I should live.

The poster was simply wrong, Sagan was in no danger at all, the issue lies entirely with the posters thinking.
I gave as good as I got.
You want to tell me how to raise, protect, and care for my own child? - without being there and knowing the situation first hand. That's the response you'll get.

If we're talking about likes and dislikes in the video, I will throw in my 2-cents. 

I *knew* people were going to complain about the kid having a sharp object in his hands, or banging stuff with the screwdriver, or standing on the packages, etc.  But it's Dave's kid and he can raise him as he likes and I was not going to jump to the same conclusions others were that the kid was in danger.  But as soon as I saw the screwdriver, I knew a lot of whining was coming

Regarding kids in videos... I am not a huge fan of children... they are universally 0.00001% as interesting as their parents think they are, so I tried to skip over the kid parts, but they were pretty constant so I ended up skipping much of the video.  Didn't offend me, just wasn't interesting.

The only thing I thought was a bit of a low blow was bashing the smoker guy.  He took the time and spent good money to send those parts... I think after the first comment (after sniffing the letter) it was enough and the subject should be dropped after.  Dave - you seem to have gotten slightly defensive when someone suggested you were making a mistake in how you parent your child.  Of course, anyone would be offended when someone preaches to them about how they should live their life.  But that's precisely what I thought was kind of shitty in this video... nobody wants to hear anti-smoking preaching either and my initial reaction was similar to your reaction when someone told you how to handle your kid

I agree that someone will always of offended no matter what you do - and I love the "no BS" attitude of the blog - *as it relates to electronics*.  If a piece of equipment is crap, I like to know that... if a new PIC chip lacks an obvious feature, I want to know.  But if I want to listen to no-BS opinions about health, religion or parenting, I would go elsewhere.  It turns me off on the blog.

(and I say that as someone who is probably infinitely less religious than Dave, and I HATE cats and don't smoke!)

Just wanted to tell you, that this was the only and very fist episode I ever showed to my girlfriend.

There were two reasons for that:
 
First. I wanted to show her, that a child can survive in a lab enviroment without poking its eye out with the very first screwdriver.  At first, she could not believe that someone would put such a dangerous tool in the hands of a child, but when she saw Segan measuring the parcel on its own she was sold. She saw that under the eyes of a lovecaring parent this can actually work - I am sure she never saw something like that before. Thanks you for calming my girl down, making my future a bit easier! 


second reason: I was so very impressed with your reaction when Segan wanted to put the screwdriver in the cam - all the time - just like you were doing it:
"Thank you, Segan!"
"Thank you Segan!"
"Thank you segan"

Other parents would have already shouted at their child, "NO!", "NO!", "STOP IT!!" countless times. 

Your "Thank you" were so very impressive and they show that there are just top quality solderjoints in that relation!

To anyone complaining about Sagan stepping on the packages and whatnot...  the package is thrown into trucks, they get bumped to hell, packages weighing more than Sagan's weight (which is what, 20-30 Kg?) are stacked on top of that package... if Sagan would mess such a large package, there's really something wrong with the packaging.
 
And kid near knife, 1m above the floor... really ?!   What's the worst that can happen, getting a cut? He'll learn knives are sharp and won't do it second time. 

Fall off the desk? At worst case he'll break a hand or a leg, you don't falling from a meter on packages... you learn to live in real world. 
Sagan probably couldn't even move from that spot as the camera tripod and Dave were in front of him, and he had packages around the sides.

Jeesh, such people...

Like i said, the only thing I slightly cringed at was Sagan putting the screwdriver in the cooler... now I know there's plastic there and the card won't get damaged but it still felt a bit bad. You don't care that much when it's a gift but when you pay hundreds of dollars you're more attached to stuff.

I came to this topic to write exactly these words, except that I haven't shown your video to my gf yet. Hopefully she'll get over your "annoying voice" (sorry - I like it) for long enough to let me prove my point. Also, your awesome parenting and the amazing response you get from Sagan makes me really really want to become a dad, but I still don't know if I well be good at it.
I'd love to see Project Sagan progress, please have him star on other videos!! I'd also love to see some videos/posts where you share parenting tips and stories. There should be a wiki for it!
