The wagging piece of all-thread on the saw robot reminded me of K9 wagging his tail when the Doctor would tell him he was a good dog.

so... so.. many technical defaults and horrible piloting.... the axe swinging was determined to attack with the flat edge of the axe rather than the pointy one,

hmm, 13KG weight limit for an autonomous killing machine, i think this forum could make something horrifyingly efficient for one of these comps. just if it happens i hope they bloody test it before throwing it to the wolves....

I agree that a large number appear to follow similar designs, however i think some of those flipper designs could be improved, still to that end a large number of those units are made to operate on both sides, not leaving a clear side to be flipped onto, so perhaps a whirling buzz saw will still remain the champ just on the fact your flipper arm means nothing when it get cut off,

now a sell righting buzz saw, i see that as being on the right path,

A hight voltage weapon would be effective to kill electronics of the opponent?

I have always wanted to see a robot with some form of hydraulic vice grip/pressure rod combination. It would probably be hugely impractical, regardless of weight class, not to mention having a hard time catching its opponent.

Yet if it did get a firm grip... Hydraulic piston pumps starting up, and the 20mm solid steel ram rod slo-o-o-owly pushing out from the front, toward the opponent. Initially our hero will get dragged all over the arena, as the victim attempts to break free. Yet soon the ram makes contact, and with tons of pressure on tap start to push through. Creaking. Pops. Groans. Sparks. Shrieks. Smoke. Deformation. Eventual silence.

ElectroIrradiator you could do it with only the claw, using a solenoid clutch, electric motor operates a downward direction claw, then once caught the clutch clamps and a hydraulic piston starts adding to the fun,

probably have 2 flipper arms either side of the claw to both act as support and to try and flip when the claw will not work,

Every year my school had "Engineering Week" where there would be various competitions throughout the week for the engineering clubs to see which one was the best. At the end of the week they had a battle bot competition where each club built a robot and had them fight to the death. This is from one of our battles this year (it gets more interesting at around 3:40 (my club is IEEE)

so if i read that fight correctly, the other robot jammed the motor, which in turn ripped off the lid and somehow disabled it?

I just never got the attraction of these competitions myself, "robot" to me means there should be large amounts of autonomy or programming at least, all these types of competitions I've seen it's just RC cars with weapons.

Not that there is anything wrong with RC cars with weapons, if that's what floats your boat, I'm sure it's lots of fun, but I think calling them bots, is... stretching the definition considerably.

they do give bonuses to walking and autonomous bots, just did not see any in daves video, but seems he only recorded the beatle weight, there was also the ant weight and feather-weight (weirdly the heaviest)

Yes, good point, I was thinking the same thing. A fully autonomous contest would be very interesting. There could even be rules to make it easier and more standardied to track bots, like for example every bot had to have full circle coverage IR transmitters as a minimum.

Square, heavy, very low profile and low CG robot with very strong adversary flipper mechanism and able to work identically upright or flipped, single switch setting reverses controls as needed when flipped.

It makes me wonder what type of radically different robot would be most effective at combating the current breed.

One that interferes with the opponents RC.

If you all can build something better or autonomous why don't you put your money where your mouth is so we can hand you back your robot in pieces.

Autonomous gets 150% bonus this year and shufflers 150% and walkers 200%.

Rules seem to suggest the weight bonus is 200% for all classes, but maybe that info is outdated?

Also, 16.000 km and change is a bit far to drive, not to mention my car would get wet... :-\

Get a robot with an induction heater on it to wedge under their robot and cook it.  It shouldn't be long until their board melts or goes into thermal shutdown.

If I can find a battle bots in the us I will make that.

This reminded me of the old show Robotica, which was very entertaining to watch. I think they still broadcast it on the Discovery Science channel.  :)

the rules on that page are kinda iffy and unspecific.

what about just using a robot with a mortar mounted to the front of it? since "excessive arena damage" is vaguely unspecific and it's neither explicitly an explosive nor a gun. sort of their weird cousin
and as gun is not defined, one could make the case that it implies firearms or other chemically propelled projectiles and not lorentz field accelerated projectiles unless gun is defined as projectile launchers of any kind

it also doesn't say you can't disable the driver somehow, using a gaseous anesthetic or excessive sound pressure, etc.

and yes, the fun with rules is trying to find loopholes

a projected water disruptor would be neat too, or several even.

I haven't followed these robot wars too closely but I am wondering if you studied the development of these fighting robots whether you would see evidence of a form of Darwinian evolution as the best designs became incorporated in the next generation.

Already there seems to be a trend to small wheels, broad based stance and low center of gravity and the flipper device seems to be the weapon of choice.

It makes me wonder what type of radically different robot would be most effective at combating the current breed. I don't know the rules so I won't speculate.

Honestly, I think 'robots' may have peaked with Blendo:

Where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

As soon as a new type appears and does well it spawns a heap of imitators at the next one. Also, Pete Abrahamson created a Rock Paper Scissors theory about the current types.

I just found this video of Jamie Hyneman discussing Blendo:

A bit more technology in there than I thought there was.

For battle bots and the like, I think that nothing beats Charles blog, its very funny to read, and a lot to learn, and as a MIT student e has access  as he says to infinite waterjet, so his bots are pretty awesome, give it a look:

Jamie says there was no countermeasure to Blendo.  That may have been true when he was competing but one eventually evolved.

Ziggo was a spinning robot inspired by Blendo.  He was a two-time champion and was dominating his weight class when he came up against Code: Black.  Code: Black was a robot build specifically to defeat Ziggo.

So did he?  See for yourself.
