Title: EEVblog #537 - Square Kilometre Array Phase Array Feed Prototype

Dave has a very quick look impromptu look at the Australian Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Phase Array Feed Prototype receiver

NOTE: This is most definitely not up to my usual standard for content or quality, so don't expect much, it is what it is.

That dish would be way cooler if they turned it into a giant woofer.

Nice time-lapse shots of The Dish. Did you happen to catch it in use, or was the motion some sort of demo or maintenance mode?

I was pleased to see that the Parkes telescope was conceived and partly designed by two great British scientist/engineers, "Taffy' Bowen, who was one of the developers of radar, and the famous Barnes Wallis, who designed the bouncing bomb used in the "Dambusters" raid.

It was in maintenance mode.

I guess since it was the top grossing film in Australia in 2000, something I didn't know until I read its Wikipedia entry, you may have already seen this:

I liked it.

The strine was incomprehensible; luckily they provided an interpreter in the film for the NASA American at  Parkes O.  ;)

That guard has hilarious.

"The Dish" was a great film. But just like similar films here in the US, the filmmakers took a LOT of liberties with the facts in the name of a "better story".

Really looking forward to a proper EEVBlog video tour of the place!

Very cool. I love RF stuff, but the camera mutes when zooming???? That was annoying as the US government shutdown!

Have seen a few cameras that will do that, but it is usually a menu option to disable.

The microphone is mounted too close to the optical zoom motor, so they decided to mute the audio to avoid recording the motor/gear noise. :wtf:

It may be that the camera is so small (and undamped) that there's actually nowhere on the camera where you could place the camera without picking noise from the motor. The noise would of course be mainly conducted through the case, not through the air.

"The Dish" was a great film. Sam Neill as the nerdy manager of the facility.

Apollo 11-era technology at its best.
