Dave, add some subtitles to your videos
« on: September 20, 2012, 01:20:10 pm »
In English, nothing more complicated.
Sometimes I can't have the audio on, so subtitles will be fine.
Maybe some potential users can read English but not understand spoken English very well.
You will have more users ;)

Sorry, but that would be a massive undertaking in time and/or money I'm afraid. There are just too few people who would benefit from it to warrant doing it.
I have looked into it before.

Dave.

EdoNork, when you play video on youtube, you can click on "CC" and then on "English", and you have subtitles.

Those are computer generated, unless the video uploader has provided captions. For the most part, these suck, though they occasionally provide some good comedy.
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

I have to desagree: They ALWAYS suck, but yes, they are funny.

But that's better than nothing.

Well, try writing an optimised speech-to-text program that can handle multiple dialects/accents, continuous speech, odd abbreviations and anachronisms. For the most part, all speech-to-text programs available today suck.

What has that got to do with anything?

I occaisionally watch those just for the fun of it. When I have watched them, it often had nothing to do with what was being spoken and made no sense :D.

Hi Dave,
I know this is a pretty old post but it looks like there's some new feature where you can enable community subtitles. So bored/ silly people such as myself can type subtitles for your video as we watch it. I don't know if you can/ would be interested in turning that on.

and some pranksters will make sure they'll be funny.... like the community suggestions to google translate... (remember the Russian Federation translated as "Mordor" ? :D )

it's very time consuming to do subtitles, in my own trials it's about 3X the length of the video unless your really quick at typing!

video owners can take the automatic subtitles and edit them but they are usually in such a mess it's easier to start from scratch

Yes. And if I had 5 minutes I'd pay someone to do it. But when my video average like 30 minutes, and have technical not everyone understands (read, the cheap translation services in China/India/Wherever), then it's clearly not worth it.
