Title: EEVblog #959 - How Much I Make On Youtube Revealed
Post by: EEVblog on December 22, 2016, 02:02:00 am
Dave reveals exactly how much he makes on Youtube and shows you the Adsense Youtube income screen with nothing hidden.
Very few Youtubers will do this!
Discussion about the struggles of making money on Youtube as a full time living, average CPM rates, and supplementary income sources and paid sponsorship and embedded advertising.
How much money do the other big Youtubers make?

Yes, Youtube management have said I'm allowed to do this.

Your knowledge level is 100 times mine and I'm good with that. I consider you a very smart person. I like that you don't talk down to people or act like your better then anybody. To be honest mail bag was what hooked me and everything else is a bonus. I will say my interest level in electronics has grown a lot from watching your videos. Someday I would love to get one of your multimeter's. Anyway just wanted to make a comment about how fun you are to watch. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you Dave for your openness and honesty.
I found it very interesting to have that insight into the earning capacity.
Needless to say, I will not be giving up my day job…

This was super useful to me as I have been thinking about creating youtube content.  Had heard of rumors of Google banning folks for disclosing their revenue which I always found quite odd.  Great to hear it is not true.  Thanks a bunch.

Dave, would/could you attribute some of your YT success to more exposure with the forum ?
The timelines for your rising YT views and the rise in forum membership seems more than coincidental.

Question for Dave - Do you get more money if we let the advert fun for the full duration? I tend to stop the advert at the first opportunity but would let it run until the end if you benefit from it.

Run length matters, watch the ad to the end ( even if you are not watching it) and then watch again with the BIG HI.  Do not switch away from the tab, as that is the one metric used to gauge attention, a backgrounded video is not considered a watch, even if you are using a video that is there to convey an audio only stream with a fixed image. To watch those pop them out to a separate window, and leave that running on the desktop, with it dragged mostly off to the side, so it still shows as a video. Still will be lower rated as an unselected window ( also a metric used), but higher than a non selected tab.

I doubt it contributes much.
Only 10k active forum users for so last I looked, and most of them found the forum because of Youtube.
Youtube is the world's 2nd biggest search engine, vast majority comes from that.

Yes, but you can't get actual quantitative data on how much more it gives you.

Having talked to some friends who've attempted to "have a go" at part-time internet content creation, I appreciate both the time required to do it full time as you do, and also appreciate the openness and honesty about the real numbers.

I doubt many people know how much time goes into writing, shooting, re-shooting, editing, and general video production of decent quality content with good camera angles and lighting, and a reasonably well done script or thought out idea.

I'm just a radio hobbyist and electronics enthusiast who's also had many (too many) years in technical support roles for products, with some engineering titles and background over the years -- so I can follow 99% of what you teach, and I really enjoy all of your content.

Your helpful attitude even with a healthy dose of snark when something doesn't work as promised, is also a lot of fun.

Best wishes on many more years of success. I'll watch the darned ads all the way through if it'll help! Haha.

This may seem a bit out there, but once and a while, when watching Dave's vids, I notice he throws in what looks like a plug for certain companies.  Is the intent there to get more test equiptment or do the various manufactures give him some money.  If so, I think he should start drinking Heinkien and Snapple.

Title: Re: EEVblog #959 - How Much I Make On Youtube Revealed
Post by: SeanB on December 22, 2016, 03:43:36 pm
The plug for certain companies is more of equipment that he consistently uses, and where on the bench he is. If you look, the power supply most used is one that he reviewed, and had some issues with, but the company involved did address them with upgrades, improving the product. Same with oscilloscopes, the ones most used are not the most expensive, nor the most feature packed, but the ones that have reasonable features for the use in question, and which are typically near the area. You rarely soo him using a massive multi thousand scope for measuring the blink time of a LED, but that one will be there when really complex serial decode is needed, or the really good FFT ability, or the SA it has in it as well.

The EEVblog multimeters are there as product placement though, he has to advertise the blog, the channel and the stuff that brings in his income somehow, and you cannot fault him for having a meter he was proud to put his name behind on there.  like on Mailbag there was a reminder of the Teespring T shirts, which have been popular, and i have actually seen them in the wild, and wear them as well.

I will never go into business creating YouTube content, but it's interesting to hear how this stacks up against other options.

I'm interested to know how much money you made from making a video that explains how much money you make making videos......   :-DD

It's like the video that showed how he edits videos... I'm waiting for the video showing how he edits videos that show how he edits videos.

Dave, I truly wish you made more for the work you do.   It is sad you probably could make 2-3 times that going back as a working engineer.

I appears that youtube rates are pretty low to me, and it would probably pay off much more to spend a little more effort to promote patreon subscriptions because you get far benefit directly for your efforts there.  One cool thing that some people do is personally thank all their new patron subscribers by name at the end of each of their videos.  You might try something like that and see if it works.

Thanks anyway and wishing you more success.

I would think he makes the same now as he would as an engineer, possibly just a bit more.

$3,000-5,000 YouTube + $3,000 Patreon + $500 Forum ads + $2,000-5,000 (possibly a lot more) in sales (BM235, microcurrent, ruler, t-shirts) ... ~$13,000 per month the last few months.

Then you have to subtract income tax, business expenses, investments into projects etc.

Given the large fluctuations in income I hope he's taking care of his savings account!

Dave, thank you for your honesty and being so open about everything. I've been watching your blog ever since I heard about it, and enjoy every episode and participating in the forums. I started doing some YouTube stuff a few years ago, not to make money, but just for fun.

My first video was on how to fix a Samsung TV whose caps on the power supply blew after only 2 years. As you know, that was just a fluke of good luck for me as it generated a ton of hits. YouTube then monetized my channel. Since then, that video has gathered > 726,000 views. My next most popular video was how to "hack" an Apple TV 3 at about 269,000 views. After that, it dwindles substantially but still, my channel has a total of 1.5 million views across over 100 videos and now just recently surpassed 1000 subscribers! EEVBlog is also added as a "Featured Channel", followed by Ben Heck, Make and Instructables.

As far as income goes, I get a direct deposit from Google about every 1-2 months for ~$100. Maybe $500-600 a year? I haven't checked lately. Nothing to live on, but it makes me happy as I put that in to my "extra goodies" account if I need to buy something from "flee-Bay". It beats my BlackBerry developer account which earns me about $3 per quarter in PayPal revenue from my app sales.  :-DD   And I had put way more effort developing my apps for BlackBerry than my YouTube channel.

Dave, you may not get rich on YouTube but we all appreciate all the hard work you do in teaching us all about electronics, busting scams, and being the independent "say it like it is" no B.S. guy you are!!!!  :-+ Thanks for not being a sell-out, like a lot of other YouTubers and Bloggers who claim to be unbiased but sell everything on the side and get paid to product place. When you get gear from a company to review, you're not even afraid to criticize it and tell the truth about stuff you don't like! That takes integrity, which is worth more than any amount of money.

So keep up the good work! I may never be able to retire on my YouTube account but it's a pretty neat world we live in where these opportunities do exist. Of course, to make big money on YouTube you'd have to be doing stuff that the average Joe is interested in, which is not electronics education related... I can show you plenty of channels with millions of subcribers, hundreds of millions of views pandering to the lowest common denominator of filth, swearing, nudity, people getting hurt, dumb stupid things, embarrassing people, conspiracies, scaring people, etc... Those types of channels do much better.

A quick search on YouTube revealed the following "starlet" Tana Mongeau who has managed to get over 160,899,282 views (double that of EEVBlog) since joining in April 2015 (EEVBlog says 2009), and over 2.2 million subscribers (EEVBlog at 400,000+). Not to create any more traffic for this young lady, but just to show you where the interest of society lies and that it will keep rewarding this kind of content:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClWD8su9Sk6GzZDwy9zs3_w/about (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClWD8su9Sk6GzZDwy9zs3_w/about)

Sadly, the number of educational and science channels subscription and view rates dwindle in comparison to this type of garbage.

Dave, You are a very well educated and intelligent person.  I would love to work and learn from you.  You would make an impressive teacher or professor.  I give you mad props, for doing this video and am a bit confused as to why this would be a primary job when you are worth so much more in the electronic/ engineering field!

I fit makes you and your family happy, then that is great, but you sir so much more valuable than the $40-50K a year!  I'm not 1/10th as smart or knowledgeable as you yet I make more than that.  I could not survive on $40K

Why not do the YouTube part time and work that 120K a year job?  You have a lovely family.  I would love to save up that kind of money for my wife and kids and our future.

This makes me sad, you are kind of a "Nerd Hero" to me.... :(

I have never accepted a single cent from a manufacturer.
I mention brands because people want to know what I think about various products. If I think a product is good then I might mention it. It's just me being me.

Of course, I'd be a fool not to.
It also helps that it's one of the smallest meters I have, and has a big display, both handy for good camera framing.
If I didn't have my own brand meter I'd be using the BM257 for those reasons.

I estimate it would be in the order of $5-10M (yes, million) at least.
That's not a stretch either I don't think. Say I have influenced 10,000 scope purchases over the last 7 years at $500ea average, there is $5M right there just in scopes.

That was a great vid always interesting to see how much someone makes and great to see how open you are about it.  It's easy to forget about the financial side of it.  For the amount of work it is to put out videos regularly it would be less fun to do it if there was zero monetary incentive.

I'll be honest, I use adblock as I find Youtube is practically unusable without it, what are your thoughts on ad blockers, and what are ways people like me can still contribute financially?  I never really thought about it till now, but using an adblocker rips off the youtubers themselves and not just Youtube so I kinda feel bad now.

And yeah, I bought a scope because of this channel. :P

Why not do the YouTube part time and work that 120K a year job?  You have a lovely family.  I would love to save up that kind of money for my wife and kids and our future.

If Dave "got a real job" he'd have to go to work every day, at the appropriately dictated times, he'd have to do the work he was set by other people, he'd have to go to inane meetings, he'd have to deal with many many people he'd rather not, he'd have to schedule his holidays in advance, he couldn't just decide to go to the beach for the afternoon... and most importantly, he would end up answerable to people other than SWMBO, the less people you are answerable to, the better.

I could be making 5 times what I make if I had remained an employee 15 years ago instead of going it alone.  I can't say I regret it.

Oh yeah I've bought a lot of stuff too like general purpose stuff from Digikey - a lot of it I have honestly not touched yet. lol.  Still nice to know I have it on hand I suppose...

Thermal imager might be my next big toy.  Kinda eyeing the E4, but don't want to spend that kind of money yet so just waiting it out.  It's one of those "nice to have" things that I might not really use all that often.

Hi Dave, I'm glad you have a bunch of decent income streams under pinned by your YouTube channel. Your work is amazing and I'm sure if an idiot like me (who failed electronics math and switched to information systems) can make a great 6 figure salary (contracting in Melbourne is great), you'd surely be worth a hell of a lot more in your chosen profession!

Keep up the great work and the excellent EEVBlog products!  8)

Dave, You are a very well educated and intelligent person.  I would love to work and learn from you.  You would make an impressive teacher or professor.  I give you mad props, for doing this video and am a bit confused as to why this would be a primary job when you are worth so much more in the electronic/ engineering field!

I'm not. I'm worth more doing what I am doing now.

Quote
I fit makes you and your family happy, then that is great, but you sir so much more valuable than the $40-50K a year!  I'm not 1/10th as smart or knowledgeable as you yet I make more than that.  I could not survive on $40K

I don't "survive" on $40k a year, watch my video again. I have many income sources, my total income is MUCH higher than that.
For example, I did a quarter of a million dollars in sales on my shopping cart in the last year, around 2000 products shipped. There is decent profit in that.

Why not do the YouTube part time and work that 120K a year job?

Because that would suck, and I can earn more by doing what I'm doing now.

I'm sure it's much more rewarding being your own boss too.  No need to rely on a company that could decide at any point to restructure or layoff etc... or simply make bad decisions you have no control over.

The EEVblog multimeters are there as product placement though, he has to advertise the blog, the channel and the stuff that brings in his income somehow

Of course, I'd be a fool not to.
It also helps that it's one of the smallest meters I have, and has a big display, both handy for good camera framing.
If I didn't have my own brand meter I'd be using the BM257 for those reasons.

The blue case though is definitely a big difference, as there are almost no blue cases in the multimeter space. Stands out quite well, and the display certainly is very nice when you are recording it.

I probably do not support Dave with YT revenue, as I detest the video ads, but have the Patreon subscription.

Sadly, while Dave and I have roughly the same income figure, there is a currency difference, his is in AUD while mine is in ZAR.

I'm my case I don't do scripts. But another Youtuber in the engineering space who does revealed that it takes about 30 hours of work to create one polished scripted 5 minute tutorial video.

I believe it. My foray into content creation was in the audio podcasting days, and I cheated by having a four person panel discuss things. That let three people think while one spoke. (And then hours of editing out hundreds of "ummmmms" from my own audio and the audio of the co-hosts, so we didn't sound like morons. (Well, we sounded like morons anyway, but at least we didn't sound like morons who couldn't form complete sentences while thinking! LOL!)

The ability to "wing it" while not rambling off too badly or confusing the viewer is a talent not all producers of content have. Especially in camera. It's harder to cheat and edit in post-production because the video will show the jumps. I cheated a lot on the audio only side of the content world.

Even when you go off on a side-topic, it's relevant, and you come back around to the original topic nicely.

I've been playing with electronics since I was about 12, but didn't specialize in it for my tech career...

I think your videos on Op Amps were where the lightbulb really turned on for me on them...

Three decades plus... after those heady 12 year old days of assembling little circuits to do junk ... like detect light and make noise with a photocell and a speaker... etc etc etc... and lots of copied op amp circuits where I "somewhat understood what was going on"... and playing with audio and RF amps and repairing a few over the years...

I didn't truly "get it". Then bam. Dave's stuff on Op Amps.

And ding! Ahhhh! Slap forehead. Correlation in the brain. Wow. (And then, thinking... "Duuuuuuh!")

Anyway, thanks again for the great content. Super job, Dave. Some people are just natural teachers.

What's your profit margin on the BM257? And how many have you sold so far? ~$25 per meter at about 1000 sold?

I estimate it would be in the order of $5-10M (yes, million) at least.
That's not a stretch either I don't think. Say I have influenced 10,000 scope purchases over the last 7 years at $500ea average, there is $5M right there just in scopes.

I spent a good £60k (>100K Aussie bucks) with Agilent/Keysight because of your channel...

I'd say at least double that. $50-$75AUD per meter at the number he buys them in. Amazon will hurt that obviously.

If you think that is expensive come to South Africa, where the most common form of internet access is via a mobile phone. Long way down is ADSL, then a lot further is fibre, and there is no cable here at all.

Australia was going to have a fibre to the premises network to 93% of the population, but the conservatives won power in 2013, tanked the rollout (which was actually finally starting to ramp up), pissed about buying Telstra's last mile copper phone network and HFC for almost 3 years and then 12 months ago started rolling out last decades FTTN technology.

Bloody joke! :(

Having said that, the NBN just rolled out fibre to the door of my lab and office, I should be able to connect NBN to both spaces in the next few months.
Something happened recently that changed rollout from many years away to happening without notice.
I should be able to get a 100M/100M unlimited data plan for about $100/month at both spaces. But I just joined a 12 month plan at the new office  >:(

Dam you're lucky, I have to wait till 2019 according to their website and if I'm lucky I'll get FTTdp (nbn tools are calling it fibre to the curb) as the Optus HFC (as told by anyone that had any Telco industry experience) in our area is end of life.

We can't even get Optus HFC anyway as our part of the suburb is a decade newer and has underground power and PSTN and was ignored by Optus and their aerial rollout.

My lab building already had THREE fibres coming into it, couldn't use any of them unless I wanted to pay $1000+/month for 10M/10M, had to get my own fibre installed.
NBN will make 5 fibres from 5 service providers  :palm:

Btw that's a pretty insane price for 10/10 mbps, I got quotes for fibre links nearly 10 months ago as part of a modernisation and BCP plan I wrote for a company that included VPLS and full end to end wan management to a D.C. with only a single link to start with, anywho 500/500 mbps was $1,200 per month and 1/1 gbps was $1,500 from Vocus.

Oh and we didn't even have their fibre in our building, it was 50 metres away and required an extension. Those prices were for a 3 year contract.

If the HFC is end-of-life what does that make the copper.
Somewhere I can hear Sir Humphrey saying "Minister, it takes time to do things quickly." Surely he also said "Minister, it costs money to do things cheaply".

Indeed, the PSTN was reported by Telstra execs in a 2003 Senate hearing to "be 5 mins to midnight", so where does that leave us in 2016/17? 5 mins past?

I spent a few years working as a business customer delivery manager and data centre manager for an ISP, now part of the TPG group, and I was pretty disgusted with the libs playing politics with the most important national infrastructure of the 21st century. It makes my blood boil after seeing the lengths and expense business have to go to to get decent reliable internet and wan network connectivity.  |O

You are lucky, I have 6 fibreas running past the door, and a manhole for access right outside, plus a fibre running under my feet to the cellular tower on property. But the rollout to my area is still unknown, there are rural areas with farmhouses scheduled before they even have the inner suburbs on the schedule.

My business park (Norwest) is one of the biggest and important ones in Sydney, and before I had my own fibre installed into the lab building there wasn't a single option in the business park under $800/month for 10M/10M (Wireless via BigAir). Insane.
The NBN should have been rolled out into business parks first, but there was no votes in that.

Totally agree, however the benefits to folks working from home, running small business from home etc are pretty substantial. The original 14 poi design (before the accc interfered and Conroy was to spineless too tell them to f'k off) would have been most efficient to build outwards from each poi.

Ps many of my ISP customers were plunking down $20k for symmetrical 100 mbps microwave links .... If they were fortunate enough to have line of sight to one of our microwave pop sites. Or they agreed to throw down $2k a month for 3 years.

Fibre extensions were damned extensive too, the shortest I managed was 150 metres and it cost is the ISP $40k despite existing pits and ducts we leased from Telstra.

Nice for some.

ADSL1 here, 1/2 hr drive from you and if I want/need more than 1.7Mbs/s (middle of night) I have to USB hotspot an iPhone to my PC.  :wtf:
So our national fibre rollout has yet to deliver for me.  :--

Myself and a few locals formed an ADSL upgrade action group and lobbied high and low. Our local box is 1.4km from fibre at our local school and a new fibre run and a HW upgrade is required to then disperse the fibre data connection back into our local copper which should get us ADSL2+ @ <20 MB/s @ 1km from the box.

We've got a meeting scheduled for early next year with our local MP (ex PM) to attempt to get things hurried along as we've already been identified as #4 priority in AK region for an upgrade.
There's been a whole lot of factors that have influenced the delays of nationwide connectivity improvements, namely Chorus that have had some of their funding (and upgrade budget) removed by legislation and henceforth sat on their hands saying F*** you.
 :bullshit:
Fun times.... not.
