Dave reveals exactly how much he makes on Youtube and shows you the Adsense Youtube income screen with nothing hidden.
Very few Youtubers will do this!
Discussion about the struggles of making money on Youtube as a full time living, average CPM rates, and supplementary income sources and paid sponsorship and embedded advertising.
How much money do the other big Youtubers make?

Yes, Youtube management have said I'm allowed to do this.

Your knowledge level is 100 times mine and I'm good with that. I consider you a very smart person. I like that you don't talk down to people or act like your better then anybody. To be honest mail bag was what hooked me and everything else is a bonus. I will say my interest level in electronics has grown a lot from watching your videos. Someday I would love to get one of your multimeter's. Anyway just wanted to make a comment about how fun you are to watch. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you Dave for your openness and honesty.
I found it very interesting to have that insight into the earning capacity.
Needless to say, I will not be giving up my day job…

This was super useful to me as I have been thinking about creating youtube content.  Had heard of rumors of Google banning folks for disclosing their revenue which I always found quite odd.  Great to hear it is not true.  Thanks a bunch.

Dave, would/could you attribute some of your YT success to more exposure with the forum ?
The timelines for your rising YT views and the rise in forum membership seems more than coincidental.

Dave, *Thank you* so very much for doing this. Electronics is a means of relaxation for me and this community has increased my knowledge and enjoyment of it a LOT.

Shows you how cheap the engineers are relative to machinists.  :D  That, and the fact that Ave curses heck of a lot more than Dave must be the reason!

Question for Dave - Do you get more money if we let the advert fun for the full duration? I tend to stop the advert at the first opportunity but would let it run until the end if you benefit from it.

Run length matters, watch the ad to the end ( even if you are not watching it) and then watch again with the BIG HI.  Do not switch away from the tab, as that is the one metric used to gauge attention, a backgrounded video is not considered a watch, even if you are using a video that is there to convey an audio only stream with a fixed image. To watch those pop them out to a separate window, and leave that running on the desktop, with it dragged mostly off to the side, so it still shows as a video. Still will be lower rated as an unselected window ( also a metric used), but higher than a non selected tab.

I'm happy to do that to help support the EEVBLOG and the other channels that I enjoy. Thanks for the information.

I doubt it contributes much.
Only 10k active forum users for so last I looked, and most of them found the forum because of Youtube.
Youtube is the world's 2nd biggest search engine, vast majority comes from that.

Yes, but you can't get actual quantitative data on how much more it gives you.

Having talked to some friends who've attempted to "have a go" at part-time internet content creation, I appreciate both the time required to do it full time as you do, and also appreciate the openness and honesty about the real numbers.

I doubt many people know how much time goes into writing, shooting, re-shooting, editing, and general video production of decent quality content with good camera angles and lighting, and a reasonably well done script or thought out idea.

I'm just a radio hobbyist and electronics enthusiast who's also had many (too many) years in technical support roles for products, with some engineering titles and background over the years -- so I can follow 99% of what you teach, and I really enjoy all of your content.

Your helpful attitude even with a healthy dose of snark when something doesn't work as promised, is also a lot of fun.

Best wishes on many more years of success. I'll watch the darned ads all the way through if it'll help! Haha.

Thanks Dave. Following SeanB's response I have resolved to let the adverts run for the full duration.

Dave, I run PCBShopper and I get income solely from ads on my web site. Would you be willing to share how much you make from eevblog ads? It would give me an upper limit of what I can expect to ever get from ads (my traffic is much less than yours).

Thanks,

Interesting stuff. I'm surprised how big a percentage of your total income is from Patreon.

Keep up the good content and Good Luck for 2017!

This may seem a bit out there, but once and a while, when watching Dave's vids, I notice he throws in what looks like a plug for certain companies.  Is the intent there to get more test equiptment or do the various manufactures give him some money.  If so, I think he should start drinking Heinkien and Snapple.

The plug for certain companies is more of equipment that he consistently uses, and where on the bench he is. If you look, the power supply most used is one that he reviewed, and had some issues with, but the company involved did address them with upgrades, improving the product. Same with oscilloscopes, the ones most used are not the most expensive, nor the most feature packed, but the ones that have reasonable features for the use in question, and which are typically near the area. You rarely soo him using a massive multi thousand scope for measuring the blink time of a LED, but that one will be there when really complex serial decode is needed, or the really good FFT ability, or the SA it has in it as well.

The EEVblog multimeters are there as product placement though, he has to advertise the blog, the channel and the stuff that brings in his income somehow, and you cannot fault him for having a meter he was proud to put his name behind on there.  like on Mailbag there was a reminder of the Teespring T shirts, which have been popular, and i have actually seen them in the wild, and wear them as well.

Thanks Dave! It's always interesting to hear your take on different aspects of making money (also thinking about your going into business making turboencobulators video here). I will never go into business creating YouTube content, but it's interesting to hear how this stacks up against other options.

I'm interested to know how much money you made from making a video that explains how much money you make making videos......   :-DD

It's like the video that showed how he edits videos... I'm waiting for the video showing how he edits videos that show how he edits videos.
