But it won't blend.

I mean, it really looks like April fools, but how did he then actually get someone to lend him such gear to first drop in a dumpster and then open up the case?
Dave did note that there were no seals to break when getting the cover off..... and the dumpster secret might be to not actually throw it in there. :)

From the serial, the factory calibration date is 6/17/10. The SW version running is 05.75.00402 which was released on 2/24/17 (recent!). Current SW is 06.00.00628 which was released 3/29/17. End of support for this model is 3/1/21.

This looks like a Keysight demo unit to me. (1) Keysight rep card on top, (2) no corporate asset tag, (3) no one needs / buys that many SW options for one unit, (4) manufactured right at the start of the product lifecycle.

Sniff sniff, I smell boolsheet! :)

Here's a couple of tells:
+ The rear housing screws were removed before trying to power on, presumably to introduce the supply fault.
+ Sticky tape has been added to conceal the windows COA sticker, but not the S/N (the roll of tape is sitting on Dave's shelf).
+ If I'm reading it right, the scope has only had one cal from new (June 2010). It seems unlikely a working lab would spend $300k and never calibrate it.
+ The test lead he cobbled together looks suspiciously like the main cable from an Agilent RF power rail probe.

Better give Keysight their demo unit back.

Could it be the clue of this video is in the first few seconds? Dave says something like:"Sorry for the quack, euh crap quality". A quack being a charlatan? He is jerking our pants.
Good one Dave.

Happy 1st of April! Greetings from Belgium.

Ah, it's that time of the year again.
Doesn't even have digital channels. And for the price of the probes, you can buy a brand new MSOX3034T. And it is loud.  The Core 2 duo inside, is obsolete. Ultimately, it is useless, so I guess, scope torture test?

While on the topic of scopes like this, for the price they charge, the least they could do is include a top of the line CPU and GPU, along with some liquid cooling in order to handle a decent overclock. The screen should be 4K 120hz with 100% adobe RGB coverage, and it should have at least 128GB of RAM in order to also handle other useful applications such as maya and adobe premiere.

They should also give it larger 120mm-140mm fans for lower noise levels, and the buttons and allow for RGB color choices.

Or if needed, liquid cool the entire system with a custom loop leading to 2 420mm radiators, that way one side or the top can have 6 140mm fans that can run at a low speed to keep things quiet.. The other side can then get tempered glass side panels to show off the RGB case lighting.

Why don't the people why buy that equipment not tell those companies to at least not price gouge them on the accessories, especially after gouging everyone to astronomical levels for the scope itself?
They should at least sell the various cables, probes and other items of like $3-$5 each. or go with the standard pricing for high quality cables and do $1 per foot.

Oh, it is, but the compensation is hemisphere specific so you have to swap the compensator out if you move hemispheres with it. Perhaps that's why it was in the dumpster, it's got a northern hemisphere compensator in it?

It's called "lead time".

Dave has to plan the release so that it can play out on the appropriate date all around the world.  Remember, too, that New Zealand is 2 hours ahead of Eastern Australia.

People who are confused by the date need to broaden their outlook.  After all, this is a global forum.

Seriously though, that's a serious bit of kit.  Say someone did come across something like this or you simply have no warranty left and the drive dies, are you pretty much SOL?

This is probably an april fools prank
You'd be surprised the stuff companies throw out, usually some stupid reasoning and the fact that they have a lot of money.  Easier for them to just buy a new one than to deal with troubleshooting it.

And it's not like it's that great of a scope anyway, it can't even get into the 40gig range which is what you'd need for real RF work.  >:D

This just in today : Dave Jones has been arrested, and is now locked up in Sydney jail.

A big engineering company in the building that mr. Jones works in has handed over a surveillance video to the police. Although the quality of the video and audio was pretty low (ironically, said company was thinking of asking mr. Jones to fix this), and identification of the perpetrator is difficult, a man can clearly be seen sneaking into the company premises wearing a T-shirt depicting a flux capacitor, whispering something with 'Flynn', then grabbing the scope in question, muttering something with 'dazzler', and sneaking out again.

Investigation is ongoing.

I ain't believing it, why would the the guy in charge, not take it home  as a sweet sweet summer time hobby repair project? Just like my uncle, who brought in a nice core 2 duo computer, after the company replaced it, because it didn't output to the screen at right aspect ratio (a limitation of the Enterprise Windows). Installing Linux fixed it.

This was up here on YouTube in Australia before April 1st so it doesn't qualify as an April fools joke.......  :box:

It's called "lead time".

Dave has to plan the release so that it can play out on the appropriate date all around the world.  Remember, too, that New Zealand is 2 hours ahead of Eastern Australia.

People who are confused by the date need to broaden their outlook.  After all, this is a global forum.

Maybe so, but to be a proper April fools joke it has to happen within the first 12 hours of April the 1st......not the last 2 hours of the 31st of March.......no such thing as lead time with date /time dependant jokes......April Fools jokes don't run to UTC or Greenwich time

The thing was given away in the first few minutes anyway when dave talked about companies nearby that were high end enough to use such a beast without having even looked at the front......but then acting like it was a huge surprise when he realised what it was.......anyway, it was all in good fun and it got me going for a while........well maybe a second or 2 lol

Yes, there is UTC+14 zone, but there isn't a UTC+20 zone, which there would need to have been for the video to appear on 1st April in at least one place. Here in the UTC+8 timezone the video appeared at lunchtime.

Talking of chucking stuff out, it's amazing how many people at companies don't know the difference between what something cost, and what that thing is actually now worth!

One company i consult at has a large room full of obsolete gas analysis equipment, that cost something like £500k a pop back in 1995.  Today, it is nto supported by the manufacturer, only runs on Win95, and no one left in the company knows how it works, and most of it is probably broken and you can't get spares anylonger.  But it can't be thrown out because it is too 'expensive'  (despite being actually worthless..... ;-)

When you have a global presence, your 'location' isn't as significant.

The only way - it would seem - that you would be happy with such 'April Fool' videos is if they are only available to each time zone between the hours of 00:00 and 12:00 in that time zone.

Not really practical and even if you could implement such a thing, it would be rather confusing to have some members actively discussing it while others are unable to even see it until some time later.  That, in itself, would be a dead giveaway and defeat the whole purpose.

The answer is simple - just put on your big girl panties and realise we are living in a global community.  This involves a series of adjustments in our appreciation of numerous subjects - from language, culture and history to weather, currency and time zones.

March 26, or 25 depending on where you are living

Phone rings...

Ed: Keysight, Ed Gorbea. How may I help you.
Dave: Hi Ed, it's Dave from the EEVblog.
Ed: Oh, Hi again Dave, what can I do for you.
Dave: Well Ed, I think it is about time I did another scope review. But I need a unit before the end of the month.
Ed: OK. I have a few X1000 demo units. I could send you one of those.
Dave: Well thanks, but I kinda already went to town on that one. And I do not want to review another quack, euh, crap quality scope. I need the duck's guts this time, the best you can get.
Ed: Well... I do have this DSO-X 93204A. I guess I can send you that one but only if you promise to be extra gentle with it. It's a $300k device.
Dave: Hey, don't worry. It's not like I am going to throw it in the bin or anything.
Ed: OK,I will take your word for it. Send me you information and I will ship it ASAP.
Dave: thanks Ed. I will send you an e-mail. I have got your card taped right in front of me here. Have a nice day. Hangs up.
Ed: O Dave, one more thing. Don't take it apart either. It's super sensitive.

Silence...

There's no way Keysight would ship that scope to Dave just for a joke, so if they did - there has to be more to it. Can't imagine what.

I think it's more likely he got it off some business nearby just before they were sending it off for a recal?

In my company everything that hit end of supplier support gets thrown out regardless of residual value. They do not want to have risks of something going wrong and not able to fix it.

I think using SMA and especially some random SMA connectors which could be of Chinese quality with this scope was a bad idea. You can ruin the scope connectors that way.

Yep it is a big world and we are all part of it, but the simple fact is if you tell an April fools joke either before or after the time window where you are telling it, you instantly become the fool according to the rules.

Those rules were made up when the impact was entirely local, long before the idea of a global audience was even conceived.  Rules need to keep up with the technology - a common failing.

So - the question is .... What would be an appropriate set of rules for April Fool's on a global stage?

If I hear you right, you are saying we stick to the old time constraints as they apply to the prankster's location.

Do we have some alternate suggestions?

I actually know of a company in Sydney that has a big contract to dispose of all sort of tech waste.

I went in there one day.....its not far from the airport....to look for some small NEC Pasolinks that were decommissioned by Telstra a few years ago and seemed to vanish......anyway, thats why I was there, but had no luck finding them, but as I walked through the place I was totally taken back by the piles of test gear and other high and low end gear sitting on pallets waiting to get shredded......
No amount of crawling , begging or offering money under the table would let me get even one piece of it.......they were very keen to let me know that under the agreement of their contract, every last bit of gear was to be destroyed or they would loose there contract in a heartbeat, and be liable to prosecution as well.
Like all gov departments, the gear was simply replaced under the budget they had to fill each year and the old stuff written off......it was totally unbelievable and a crying shame, and happens a lot more that you would think.

In Australia, while planning may be done many weeks ahead, the actual joke is typically presented before midday on April 1st itself.

Quote
In our country most jokes are started week(s) before and declared april fools at april 1st.
That is interesting - and it has a certain appeal.

Do we have any other takes on how April Fool is observed around the world?

I just looked but internationally a lot of april fools jokes are published days to a week or so before.
Give an example press conference from Richard Bransons expedition to the middle of the earth 30 march 2012 with the follow up press conference would be sunday ( april 1st).
If it is a few days before it is harder to spot and you see that newsagencies and papers fall for it, escalating the stories.

Well, this year it fell on a Saturday, but during the week there are many on the local radio stations. last year I did a snake trick, using some plastic strapping as the reptile. Receptionist fell for it hook, line and toilet. Then claimed it was no joke, but as I have been the recipient of many attempts in the past I classed this as a win.

I liked it, it was lovely, tongue totally in cheek, test procedure almost a trademark of Dave ( aside from him actually using a multimeter to measure if the SMPS transformer in a scope has an open circuit primary) and a thing of beauty and a joy to behold when he got the case off and had a gander inside.

The loose connector is possible, but I have a suspicion there was a little guy who was there putting it in there first, after doing "the deed" and getting the unit written off, who is mighty unhappy that "his" scope was unceremoniously whipped out of the dumpster before his end of day, so he could go and "find it just lying there" to take home.

The tax man doesn't work like that in Australia.

We don't have that same concern our American friends have with their IRS.  For example, we could win $10M in lotto - and we don't pay one cent in tax.  Put it in the bank and earn interest, though, and we pay tax on the interest - but only on the interest.

I actually saw it come up well before midnight here and though , bit early for a April fools joke, but then though.....oh well I guess NZ gets April 1 a couple of hours before us..........would have been better left until about 11am Sydney time.

What's makes Sydney people so special?  :-//

1. You live here and you are a special person.

2. What other city has people that throw away $300k scopes.

Do we have any other takes on how April Fool is observed around the world?

Here in Spain it's on December 28th.

In numbers ? I think -1.

All I ever see is, come monday, some poor small screen CRT TV standing on the sidewalk, waiting to be picked up the next day. A horribly disfigured couch that even the stray cats dare not sit or urinate upon. An unidentifiable pole of some sort. Never a $300000 scope with a loose power connector.

Dave has taken all the romance out of it.

I've thrown $300k+ items in the dumpster.

They weren't worth anything except to a museum when I threw them out, but that's what they cost new.

(eg. Fully loaded SGI workstations - I had 3 in my house at one point)

I do believe you can sell it on eBay. I have seen electronics shop inventory sold over a million dollars so some one on there might give you a pretty penny. I'd let her ride for 100k.

You need to look at the date it was released and then consider that Dave's audience is global.

Join the dots....
