I hope some of the users posting for the sole purpose of entering the competition turn in to quality forum members. e.g. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=showposts;u=77747 (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=showposts;u=77747) vs https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=showposts;u=85675 (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=showposts;u=85675)

Dave Turner can have some of my worthless posts.
Damn, he said "quailty posts"..
-
nice multimeters ;D
-
Next time can we give you some money or something so we don't have all these crappy 5 post wonders?
-
Next time can we give you some money or something so we don't have all these crappy 5 post wonders?
or... 10 post wonders.
-
Hey, I have 103 posts, and only 90% of them are *pure* crap. But I don't want any of Dave's multimeters.
Beginner's section is starting to get overrun though.
-
27 pages worth of submissions since I went to bed last night. :D

Hi!

Hi Dave,
this is one reason to get registered of course :-)

I didn't want to increase my post count for no reason, but:

Is it time for a double facepalm...? :palm: :palm:
I'm hoping it's just a language thing.
-
I would like one of Dave's multimeters!
-
Nice one.
You know how to force new people to your forum. Good move.
-
Lots of postings coming up from people who couldn't even manage to piss their name in the snow.
-
Since I'm just an entry level hobbyst I tend to read email as I don't wont to bother people with questions that have answers two google clicks away but well... I like the 'social' part of that forum ;)
And yes, the t-shirt is great! What about including couple of them in next contest ? >:D
-
I wish my family life would allow more time to post on this forum.
-
And another to get me up to x5 posts ;D
-
Lots of postings coming up from people who couldn't even manage to piss their name in the snow.
Have you ever *tried* to piss a Greek name? :-+
-
You think that's bad, try this one:

Never mind Greek... I feel sorry for the guy from Taiwan... :-DD
-
I'm hoping some thread thinning goes on just before the draw.
Remove all the posts that are obviously just to boost the users post count would certainly reduce the number of valid entries. >:D
-
Would have been nice to split the contest into multimeters and logic analyzer. I'd want the latter, but deleted my submission because I already own the former.
-

Dave isn't a dickhead, and we all know that. He will be able to read into what sort of posts the winners are actually posting.
Or are you hinting that you are going to be bringing the global post count of every member to 0 so you win by default ;)

Sounds like a plan!
Actually I'd be OK with Dave excluding me as a moderator from the draw. While it's nice to win stuff, I'm sure there are users here who'd get a lot more out of the prizes than would I.
If we were talking about tools for the shed, then that's a different matter!

But that doesn't matter if you post-check the winners. If they aren't up the scratch then redraw. You haven't lowered anyone's odds.
Lot less work than thinning the herd!

Ok, lets looks at some stats:
Based on the graphs:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/forum-getting-too-popular/msg305039/#msg305039 (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/forum-getting-too-popular/msg305039/#msg305039)
1500 news posts in a day, up from 500 or so usual. That's say 1000 posts due to the contest announcement.
The contest thread has 55 pages of 15 posts per page = 825 posts.
That leaves only an extra 175 regular posts due to the contest, or up by 35% on the regular daily value.
And if you divide that by 5 as worst case figure for newbies signing up for the contests, it's only 35 people, tops.
That would be a max figure due the stats being out of date by however many hours.
Not a huge increase really?
Given that quite few (majority perhaps?) would have been existing users with one or a few posts, it does not seem like the sky has fallen here, as much as it might seem to have for some.
-
Dave,
Perhaps the next contest that has multiple prizes (examples below) could be tiered to something like
Grand prize ($500 dmm) - members > 1 year with > 100 posts
2nd prize ($100 dmm) - members > 6 months with > 50 posts
3rd prize ($50 dmm) - members with > 5 posts

I'm sure a number of people prefer to watch, read and learn, and may be too intimidated to be active on the forums.

great giveaways this time :-+ would love to score the gossen.

If you score the Fluke instead instead of the Gossen we can switch ;)

Not a huge increase really?
Your calculation doesn't take into account that because of the high traffic volume from new users a bunch of old users aren't currently posting. Not everyone hast the time and patience to wade through all the stuff. Pressing "Mark all messages as read" is just easier.
Further, in that other thread I listed something like five examples of new users who were just posting junk. It just took me a few minutes to find them in the mess the forum had become. And I didn't have to look very hard. If I can find 1/7 of the theoretical 35 misbehaving users in just a few minutes, then maybe the estimation of only 35 misbehaving users is wrong. Further, I wasn't the only one posting some examples.

I like how we're all just ignoring the people who try to enter the drawing in this thread.
If they can't figure out which thread to post in, I'm not so sure they can figure out how to use anything more than a $1.99 multimeter, anyway.
-
I mostly read so I don't think I qualify .... but what i was curious about and could not find any link to on the forum except for one mention of that dutch guy in the states that send that amazing box of goodies to Dave .....
So that's the intro now the q?
Where is the video of the chronovu?
Is it hidden in the https://www.eevblog.com/forum/blog/eevblog-436-saleae-usb-logic-analyser-review-teardown/msg199471/#msg199471 (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/blog/eevblog-436-saleae-usb-logic-analyser-review-teardown/msg199471/#msg199471) and I just missed it?
maybe it's better I don't post so much incoherent blabber ;)
I think I found it ....
mailbag #290 must have missed it .....
no way I am going to make 5 posts if I edit my old posts :-+ :-BROKE

Do you think I joined the forum just to enter this contest, or future ones?
Yeah, for sure I did. I don't have anything to contribute--you guys are all eggheads compared to me. I just watch all of Dave's videos because I have a real interest in this, but no formal training. I understand why you might be frustrated that some people are just BSing posts to join in, but that's happening. I hope you can appreciate the enthusiasm for people who want to learn using some quality tools that Dave is giving away. I've already learned a lot, but learning more is what I'm all about.
-
just getting into electronics and some free shit would be awesome
-
I'm not really in the electronic business (despite how damn am i somehow started to watch videos in the main pages), so, yeah, for me, really not much to do in the forum ^-^
anyway, why not just take the chance and grab a freebie >:D
BTW, there will be multiple drawing for each of the items/kit right? I'm afraid if Dave is gonna draw only one "quality" user and give away all to that single user :palm:
-
I believe Dave already wrote that there will be 4 draws...
-
When does the contest end? I can't watch the video atm.
-
i think the black amp hour shirt is better
-
I think a lot of the (relatively) old people are pissed off that a bunch of newbie f-wits are coming in and screwing up their chances of winning some pretty cool prizes. Can't blame them I guess, but the contest post did move me from just being a viewer to trying to participate more in the forums, with what I can offer anyways.
Some folks won't have a lot of mental resources in this area to contribute as the 'all knowing, all seeing eye of Sauron electronics knowledge' but that's part of the deal I guess. I'm certainly not that guy, but not a total newb in electronics either. I've already seen a few 'new guy' posts from other people that rate well above 'some dude ranting about noobs on the forum' so I guess that won't hurt the forum!
I'm grateful for the opportunity offered by Dave, but the anti-n00b sentiment around here from some folks is pretty unfriendly and just plain hateful. I guess some people have never been sparked in their interests by a minuscule event in their life and had something set them off that led them down a long road of learning and discovery.
-
I think the 5 posts idea was not a stick, but a carrot.
The 5 posts limit has always been just an arbitrary number somewhere above zero that is designed to weed out N percent of people who will just join the forum and post in the contest thread and then bugger off. Thus leaving behind a whole bunch of accounts with just one post.
Should it have been 0, 10, 50, 100?
50 would have probably weeded out all but a handful of eager spammers, but I know of plenty of good forum contributors who have less than that.
0 might have resulted in much less spam across the forum, but I don't like single post accounts either.
-
Where did the prizes come from?
Are they ex review units your not allowed to ebay on?
I would expect the manuf to promote their own give aways otherwise.
If the motivation of the competition is to recruit new users, it certainly is a good incentive to get the lurkers to come forward and sign up.
If you want to reward active forum users, you could either pick thoughtful responses or interesting thread creators, and put their names into a hat, or possibly a forum poll for users to nominate.
Last idea, might be to select active users from past 30, 90, 360 days, and do a random draw.
I have no advice for me-too competition entries. I assume you log ip address, and could identify suspect names.
Alternatively an embargo on new user creation during competiton duration, however this would prevent any intended recruitment drive.
edit: this post probably belongs in the other suggestion thread. Sorry i mixed them up.
-
I think the prices were from the previous reviews - i saw dave with a scope teardown..i wonder when will that go as a prize :)
-
im in :-+

Nah, it's OK. This forum is not very strict in that sense unless you create a topic very outside a category.
-
Dave, next time a contest is announced it would be nice to know right then the closing date/time of the "I'm in" thread. Have some kind of announced deadline.
I missed by a few lousy hours...

I wonder how many contestants would be disqualified if he checked everybody for 5 valuable posts. ;D
-
I wonder how many contestants would be disqualified if he checked everybody for 5 valuable posts. ;D
He doesn't have to, he checks after the draw, and if he deems the posts not worthy, then elects to disqualify said person. Really It doesn't change anyone's odds at all.

When is the winner announced?
Not sure, the last week, and this week continues to be very difficult to get time to do anything at all. I need to schedule the live drawing.

Dave consistently underestimates the appeal of David L. Jones signed memorabilia.

There are only a couple of signed items in existence. A Fluke 27 you saw in the Electronex video, and a couple of uCurrents somewhere.

Which make it all the more valuable.

Your today is my tomorrow! Still 10/31 here. And it's past noon of the following day in Sydney. My DeLorean is out of plutonium, so I'll have to watch the recorded draw during breakfast, hours before it actually takes place! :o
-
Awesome, can't wait for the live show!
That's at least one person who will show up and be witness, that's all I need!

Always wondered what is wrong with normal chat channels, likes something on IRC. And if anyone cares, i just opened a channel #eevblog on freenode.net .. Of course Dava can have it anytime ...
But stuff like that is available to basically everyone, without the need of fance web sites and script crap... unless you want to, in which case you go to http://webchat.freenode.net/ (http://webchat.freenode.net/). But pretty much any device allows for IRC chat. No need to tie it to some other content vendor that you can't even use without allowing a boatload of external scripts.

Who won?

Dave set up a #eevblog on Afternet years ago, and even had a chat tab on the main web site for it with the server details and a web client -- alas few people were interested, so he eventually removed the references to it. However, a handful of us still cling on in there.
But pretty much any device allows for IRC chat. No need to tie it to some other content vendor that you can't even use without allowing a boatload of external scripts.
Bear in mind that ustream's chat is also backed by and available through IRC - c.ustream.tv #eevblog, from memory!
