If you're masochistic enough not to use an adblocker, it's definitely not empty ;)

That's odd, I tried disabling the adblocker, and it was still empty.

You also need to disable any script blockers and reload...  lol

Shame on Dave...

Good thing I always use Adblock and NoScript!  :)

I don't mind the one as a header to any page, but the one as a footer is just.......visual pollution.  :--

I hate it. It is better though than the casein some forums. There are ads placed among the posts. At least this way it isn't in the way, but I still hate it.

you have to scroll that far, the buttons are under that ghost post.
i mean can't be that kind of floating annoying message that adblock just hide them and not make any visual pollution with it.

The way it splits the last post from the "reply" button is just jarring. Whoever decided to place it there should be smacked with a UX book.

I edited c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts a long time ago and I added:

Hi,

This is clearly "how we annoy the customer/reader" behavior...

Fail for Dave!
Dave-2 should irritate "Dave-1" the whole day, with the "fale" button....  :box:  :-DD

The problem is not so much that it's an ad, but more that it's masquerading as a forum post. If there was an ad below the reply buttons then it wouldn't be so jarring.

Hi,

I think Dave is crossing a line here...
The next step is advertising between the posts!

But, its Dave forum he can do wat he wants, i will leave this forum if my filtering can't handle the ads anymore.

I agree. It is like that annoying fake account on EDABoard (for some reason a doctor).

And in HTML it looks like a real post, so no way to AdBlock the entire thing by ID or class.

I have to admit I switched off my adblock for EEVblog. Besides extra pocket money for Dave the adverts are usually relevant. But these new ones at the bottom of forums pretending to be forum posts make me want to switch the blocker back on. Next they will be mixed in with the threads like on many other forums, then the bloody ads will start pretending to be post or quote buttons and take you off to some spam site or trojan downloader  :palm:

ETA: I just noticed it after my post. Why does it have Quote, Modify and Remove buttons on it? I clicked Remove but it didn't work  :-DD

Same here, I have adblock turned off on the EEVblog. The ad I see is in itself not annoying (it's not animated or distracting and it's electronics-related) but the fact that it masquerades as a regular post is.

I'm thinking if it was a hack the ads would be more "interesting."
As it is now, I don't find it particularly troublesome as long as there's no flashing and/or sound.

Ghostery hides it, as it does all redirects. For now I have eevblog whitelisted in both Adblock and Ghostery.

I was online when it first occurred or was implemented which was approximately 12:30 am this morning, Initially I thought that it was only related to the thread I was watching and perhaps a member had posted a picture or video that did not render correctly, A number of refreshes and a computer restart did not clear it, I fired up another PC which was also showing the same thing so at that point I had confirmed that it was not my end and I could then go to bed and sleep easy.

This is taking long member names to the extreme, it looks weird.

I was slightly wrong, but:
I also set my criteria to zero posts and inactive for the last month or two. And it's obvious most of them are just spam accounts that got through the filters.
And since it's on the end of every page...

I haven't seen it in 4 years!

Soon as an ad affects my usage of a site it goes away. Wasting the limited vertical space on modern monitors is a prime example of affecting usage.

I wouldn't complain about it because I realize it's how you make money, the ads are appropriate for the site, and I feel a bit guilty about blocking them  :-[ .  I can't figure out how to allow supplyframe.com on eevblog but block it elsewhere.

Sure it does, you have to scroll down before you start reading. It's just that everyone got used to it.

Ads within the top and bottom limits of the forum page affect user flow, without those ads all the buttons/links are easily accessable without interuption from the ads. I use the links and shortcuts both top and bottom and when the ads are outside the user's area it makes for a better flow.
The footer ad that was there this morning definately did the job it was intended to....it was in your face and we may not have bitched so much IF it was electronic related.
You have to make a living Dave, do as you must.

BECAUSE IT DOESN'T INTERRUPT THE ******* READING

Sure it does, you have to scroll down before you start reading. It's just that everyone got used to it.
BTW, try not to swear and SHOUT. People tend to take you less seriously.

Ahh, it's readable again, thanks Dave!

Fyi, looks like its turned off by Dave just now, and this script will make the last legit post disappear.

In theory I made it check the poster's name to be sure it was the annoy-o-tron in action, in practice 20 years of C-like languages and you'd think I'd be able to reliably type == instead of =  |O

Happens to all of us... LOL...
Even after the same amount of time I sometimes forget the semicolon... I curse myself because it should simply be habit.

Those pesky varmints get me too often.  :-DD At least the semicolon is usually alerted by the compiler, the = vs == usually ends up in your released code, usually somewhere obscure and doesn't show even after thorough testing. Like I think in this case (an external change showed it up).

They should have made the assignment operator something else than = imo, but that's easy to say today. In this case it was extra devious because the script actually worked and removed the ad, just not they way it was intended. That kind of bug is the worst.

Thanks to Dave it's not needed any more, I'll save the script though might be useful on other forums. :)

I prefer the footer.  You can ignore it by not scrolling down that far.  The header ad is always in your face.

Yet no one has complained about the (huge) header ad for about 4 years now  ;D

I haven't seen it in 4 years!

Soon as an ad affects my usage of a site it goes away. Wasting the limited vertical space on modern monitors is a prime example of affecting usage.

It's not the site, the problem is the stupid, cheap ass 1366x768 resolution PC manufacturers have stuck with 10 years now, despite Windows GUI elements increasing in size progressively.

Well, some users like not to use a maximized window (eg, 2 windows side by side on a 1920x1080 monitor), are using page zoom or are viewing the website on a limited resolution tablet. Luckily the forum fits well on most cases, thanks to the ad being on the top. You can get the window width below 1024 pixels just fine, which is perfect for these cases.

BUT, when you have one of those miserable 1366x768 displays (even more infuriating on a desktop PC!), the height is SO LOW that the top banner does indeed ruin your experience. Sadly this is by far the most popular resolution on laptops.

If it isn't much work, I propose the following solution: have the ad relocate itself when the browser window gets narrow, otherwise use that empty space we got here:

Actually, the ad doesn't have to relocate. The content to the left and right of the ad could just shift to the bottom or the top if the windows gets narrow.

I don't have a single display that crap. But the fact is, 16:10 or sadly, 16:9 is common. Wasting that limited vertical space is not acceptable.
