I'm not sure about anyone else, but I noticed changes in the Keepvid application years ago. I've been a paying customer of the Windows Keepvid application for years. However a year or so ago, I noticed that my registration key was failing to authenticate.

After an e-mail to their support section, they offered to sell me a "new" copy of Keepvid at a discounted rate. Since I paid for a perpetual licence, I argued this and only after one e-mail, they offered me entirely new registration details, for free, for their online service. But that required me to register... etc... etc... and something didn't feel right to me.

It was at that time it appeared that Keepvid.com and any associated services had either been taken over or bought out by some other company (whoever responded to their e-mails appeared to have no idea and their English was poor). I'd say it has changed hands at least once.

Keepvid hasn't been the same for a long time and to me, it has been dead in the water since not long after version 1.146 of their application (from around 2013; pictured in the screen shot).

Probably not the right place for this but I did not want to publicise the solution I use on YouTubes own site, in case they have got it in for utilities that allow you to download content.

The application I use is YouTubeDownloader from Digiarty, it is a free download and does not appear to have any limitations, I have been using it for a few years without any problems and the GUI is very easy to use just copy the video URL select the add video button (top left icon) hit the paste and analyse in the dialogue that appears then select the format and file type to add it to the list, then hit the download button (you can add additional videos while it is downloading).

Works on other sites as well as youtube and is very easy to use.

This is basically the "making back-up copies of software/movies/music" argument again.

The way I see it, if I've paid for it, I can do whatever I want with it in the privacy of my own home. No company or legislation will convince me otherwise. If I can stream it/view it/read it etc... then I have the right to save it and keep it indefinitely for private use. If it comes with DRM, I'll strip it out and make a non-DRM copy of it.

Hey All

the easiest way to download videos from youtube is with VLC
just dowload it
menu>stream URL
copy link in then down the bottom of that box click on convert and save
note you can easily change what encoding you want to use.
just double check to see if this would be quicker and it is
just download eevblog 2 about synology download
5min video downloaded in maybe a minute

The instructions where given in my link. It is platform independent and easy instructions are given for Linux, Mac, and Windows.

The only requirement is Python which everyone should have in this day and age by default. ffmpeg is a good idea too. Both open source and platform agnostic.

It is command line (so very powerful - script it with whatever you are competent with) but there are ample free open source GUI's suited to those of more simple needs (like Dave )

I just find it depressing to see closed shite with ludicrous paid subscriptions and forced spam/adware rubbish and god only knows what being touted. You do know all the web server based ones will be using youtube-dl behind the scenes anyway? Why would they pay a team of programmers to keep up to date with all the latest shenanigans when the best source is the open source?
