So watching this video, the device seemed "off" when checking the flicker for the high res photos, I realized what's bothering me.
They put a TP5400 Switching charger to charge the battery

But... where is the inductor for it?

It's gone. A mystery. Maybe that's why it's half the price?

The TP5400 is a charger and boost circuit to produce 5V from a single li-ion cell. But perhaps you don't need the inductor if you aren't using the boost feature.

Also, there's something going on next to the battery connector (where the FNIRSI logo is). Perhaps that's a DC-DC converter?

The half-price thing is, of course, just a marketing gimmick.

Oh, it's not a buck charger, its a linear charger with a boost converter.
Doh.
