So I have been trying to buy a 121GW for a few hours now, but it is impossible to pay for it without a PayPal account. It forces me to login or to create a new account. How do you guys get it done without consenting to this aggressive behavior?
I sent an email to the shop, but Sydney is asleep now and my money is burning a hole in my pocket. I really want to give Dave my money, but not when PayPal is that much involved.
I tried it incognito, I tried different browsers, I tried different email addresses...

Actually I think this is PayPal's doing--it is not fair to blame the shop. Many or all online shops have been suffering the same way.
PayPal used to work as a credit card processor for online shopping, but they recently changed their software so that you cannot pay for goods through PayPal without having an account with them. It is very frustrating.
It happened to me recently with a small business that had a product I wanted. I couldn't buy it because of this PayPal crap. Luckily they had an Amazon store and I could buy it from there. Could Amazon be an answer for you?
-
I'm absolutely not blaming the shop. I did some Google searching and saw how it works, it is clearly PayPal being a ***. Just another reason why I am not paying for it through an account. I don't trust them (had issues a few times too many).
I tried and calculated different shops, and Dave has the cheapest option for me. I guess I have to wait for him to get out of bed.

You can have an account without linking your bank account - I've been a PayPal user for well over 20 years and it's never been an issue. Maybe from outside the US, things are different, but I've never had a problem with them or using them to pay for things (or receive payment for things I've sold).
Selling things an accepting payment through them - I can see where paranoia might come in, since it's awfully easy for the buyer to simply say they never got the item and poof, their payment is refunded and your out the item AND the money. But for you buying something? I fail to see a downside. Fees? They are the same as any other credit card processor. And that's on the seller anyway.

Let's just say I have a bad taste in my mouth from them and I don't want an account. The website states I can pay without an account, but in practice it just is impossible. I don't think Dave would agree with that, at least I don't.

Get one from moderator Simon's shop:

Importing it myself from Dave would be a good amount cheaper even though it has to ship and pass customs... Welectron also sells it by the way, though a fair bit cheaper than Simon, still Dave would be cheaper for me.
-edit-
For the numberphiles
Simon 270 (incl shipping, excl customs because brexit?)
Welectron 245 (incl shipping and a set of brymen leads)
Dave 240 (incl shipping + customs)
-edit2-
Welectron offers the possibility to pay by bank transfer. Would be a 2% discount if I choose to do that. That is a good price and saves me the hassle of customs... I'll sleep on it.
-edit3-
That was a short nap. I bought it from Welectron and paid by wire transfer; I feel like an old man almost. Thanks for holding my hand. For the kids using the search: I paid 248,33 EUR and that includes BL21S2-T4SC silicone test leads and fitting Snap-On Alligator Clips (BAC3).
Now I hope Dave fixes PayPal for forcing their accounts and "agreements" upon his customers.

Still no word from the Dave shop...
-
Please understand if the EEVblog shop and staff take a few days Easter break, and or advised to stay home due to the corona thing,
if no updates here beforehand.

Try incognito mode of your browser. Paypal presents the payment/login page differently depending on who they think you are, I seem to recall that if you pay without an account more than some number of times they will push you into the create account/login flow, but do the tracking via cookies/local storage.
-
Already tried, check the last sentence of OP. I tried all kinds of tricks, even used a freshly installed browser I never used before... It does not let you use your CC without an account. If you don't have an account, it will only let you pay when you are making one.
I hope to receive the MM tomorrow (as I said I bought one from Welectron = Germany and I am in The Netherlands), very quick despite the covid19 thing going on...
Just wanted to make sure Dave knew PayPal is f'ing with his customers. I hope he can fix it or at least tell us why this happens.

Fwiw, i just tested in eevblog store, and paypal gave me the option to checkout with card instead of account.
Underneath the "Log In" button is the "Pay with a Bank Account or Credit Card" button
As I say, Pay Pal does present different options depending on various factors.
-
I decided to try it again, for me no option to buy without account. What was the amount in your cart? Perhaps there's a maximum? Now I'm really curious about what is going on here...

327.36 AUD total

Who knows why it doesn't work for you, unfortunately not something that Pay Pal talks about AFAIK, maybe your country, maybe your IP address, maybe some combination of factors...

If you've ever made an account or given your email to PayPal, make sure you use a different email when you check out. They may be matching your email address to an email on file.

Tried different email addresses...
The bottom button for me is "create a new account" every time...
-
Options presented might depend on the country you and the merchant are in. Try with a VPN?
-
VPN is the only thing I didn't try yet. I don't have a subscription, so I have to get something like TOR running. May try that later this week, got the 121GW in the mail yesterday, so I need to get its batteries drained first.
I really find it strange that I am the only one here that has problems with PayPal... I had the same problem before on another website iirc. Can't remember what website it was. I'll take screenshots when I get the time so you can see I'm not just talking trash...

Just tried it too. In the Paypal screen I get the option to login or open a new account. No way to use a credit card or a direct payment. Probably there are restrictions based on country / area.

You are not the only one with problems. I faced the same problem with PayPal last time I tried to buy something.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if there were restrictions since you're buying from out of country.
-
What country are you all trying from?
-edit- I'm from The Netherlands

What country are you all trying from?
Me: USA

Not trying to be an impatient dick, but I still have not heard from the shop...
-
Have you tried to contact them via e-mail or phone? They're answering fast as a rule.
Anyway, what's your problem with Paypal? I thought everyone uses it, hmm.
You're responding to a thread that's pretty old. Never heard from them. Ordered from somewhere else, not going to bother trying to fix this.
-
Can u please tell me the place you ordered it? Don't wanna mess with paypal too.
I already did quite extensively. If you read the rest of the thread you would have seen it.
