I've been thinking along a similar line - but perhaps not so "conspiracy theory" flavoured - for a while now.

Basically, if I were Youtube, I would be looking at automated processes to handle the volume of material and to reduce staff costs.  Having an algorithm that is good at transcription is where you would start - and after that, start with your basic lexicon of trigger phrases and let the system go - with the expectation that it will be overly harsh in its determinations at the beginning.

Feedback from creators would then be addressed and the results used to train the demonetisation algorithm.  Over time, the algorithm would improve its performance.

On the Patreon thing what they are doing is actually illegal here, the merchants ( in this case Dave) are by law not allowed to charge a handling or service fee for using a service for payment. Thus they fall into the same league as Visa and Mastercard ( also Diners and American express, though the number of merchants that accept these two is vanishingly small in this country because of the fees they charge) in accepting a non cash method for payment for goods and services. Same for direct deposit as well, the banks are not allowed to charge a service fee to the customer to pay a bill at the bank.

We used to have that here in Oz, but they changed it. It's now legal for merchants to say "3% extra for CC payment" etc.

Double dipping, they still charge the merchant as well, plus a monthly "service" fee as well.

Based on the whole Leapforce thing, if they are rating YT videos based on some predetermined very strict guidelines, I can't help but wonder if regular "joe hater" could be tipping the scales in favor of his preferred target.

Also, if a channel has its content demonetized regularly, I wonder if this becomes a bit more commonplace?

One can only wonder...

There is an absolute disgusting racist religionist hate scumbag on youtube known as Count Dankula. Most of his hate videos are automatically censored, I mean lets not forget this guy made a joke video of his girlfriends cute pug dog being trained to raise its paw when presented with "Heil Hitler", and getting excited with "Gas the Jews!".

Thankfully the police and the court system are using the UK Hate Speech laws because an individual was offended at this joke video on behalf of someone or some group else. Dankula has lost his job (quite rightly!) and is in and out of court constantly, I think it's 2 years now, because the Nazi Pug is a very very complex case. We need to bring back hanging.

His last released video was titled "Give Minorities All Of Your Money" and it is the only one that has not been demonetized. I think he is learning his lesson, but if you watch the video it would appear to be a hate crime video too. Unfortunately when a youtube video that has all the right SJW credentials and passes the algorithm is finally reported, a human is involved. These "humans" can't understand a thick Scottish accent and also don't understand sarcasm, so will approve it anyway.  :horse:

/s

Hint: Stick as much SJW crap possible in the title, and switch from a Sydney accent to a total bogan outback accent and you'll be alright you drongo bastard!  :-DD ;)

That is to be expected.  If the average person isn't going to instantly understand precisely what your video is about, (ie. cat chasing fuzzy mouse in circles,) you are unfortunately very likely to end up eventually essentially being deemed "default demonetized" under the current structure for various different possible "reasons."

Manual review almost always fixes it.

Without wishing to derail this thread, I am not sure everyone sees it the way you’ve portrayed.

Not sure if it’s clear, but you do realise the video in question was a parody, albeit in very bad taste? The perp emphatically rejects accusations that he himself is anti-semitic or otherwise racist.

I strongly suspect the case will be thrown out from the evidence I’ve seen presented in court so far, but equally I am going off media court reporting, of course I am not in the court itself. Even if it doesn’t go his way, he’ll get a minor slap on the wrist, it would be difficult to claim it was his intention to deliberately stir up hate.

In the meantime the furore in the MSM has done his YT channel no disservice in terms of subscriptions and views. Even the MSM, who were initially unilaterally vitriolic about it seem to have become remarkably balanced on their reporting more recently, possibly because it’s now sub judice. If you’ve ever had to deal with the MSM, you’ll know how they love to twist a story to fit whatever agenda they want, this is true across the political spectrum.

[I learned the hard way some years ago about the MSM when I was organising kids to chat to astronauts on the ISS. We had organised a live link up to a school in the outer Hebrides, it’s a very cool thing to do. The next day for reasons known only to themselves the Daily Record decided to put a very negative spin on it just because they didn’t get to speak to the astronauts in Gaelic. It was NASA who drew my attention to the article, thankfully they were very understanding, but we were all quite shocked at how the MSM “works”.]

Thanks HwAoRrDk for these links, very informative and might explain a few things. I wonder how much they actually do directly. "Checking algorithms" can mean a lot...

In my opinion, the hate speech laws (which are somewhat related to this) were introduced too hastily. Now it´s mostly up to volunteers or paid "raters" to draw a line between opinion, sarcasm, satire, irony and hate - in an international connected network across jurisdictions. And it is not even the board admins fault, the responsibility was shifted from who does a statement to who does not remove it. Even courts do have a hard time making such decisions (at least in high profile cases), now it needs to be decided by the lowest paygrade in the system in a reasonable time and in a legally correct manner.
E.g.:
- insulting an inanimate object = no legal problem in most cultures
- insulting a person or group = big problem

So the insult itself is often not what is being judged upon here.

From my understanding (12 years experience) the biggest catch in moderation is moderating the intention behind a statement. That is somewhat short of impersonating a thought police and might lead to addressing immutable characteristics of a person (which is a big problem). Of course some cases are not a misunderstanding at all and outright "hate speech", spam or sarcasm. But weeks of demagoguery/incitement that are below the threshold of the law cause such expressions. It´s the same intention, but gone one step further. Rules that contain specific examples is like an invitation to trolls or other ill-minded people to test their boundaries.

Forums with a specialized (technical) topic are usually not affected by that a lot, because everything off topic is off the grid anyway and can be removed as such without much consideration. It´s the big players with no such specialization that are hit hard, because they lack that context as a guideline.

Now that also means that rules for everyone on such a platform are orientated by the worst cases, making it harder for everyone else.

I wonder if there is some "flag" on a channel that makes it more likely to be demonetized - seems odd that amost all Dave's are but none of mine.
Might also be type of monetization - I tend to do the minimum on mine when first released then add more on older  vids when I do a new one.
Just doing a new one today so let's see if that triggers anything..

Someone (can't remember the channel) said that leaving the video without making it public will also trigger the issue. He waits for couple of days before posting it. If it gets demonetized, he will request a review, monetize it and make it public after that.

Nothing against a good conspiracy theory. But I don't believe this one. If there are so few channels that Google want to get rid of it must be easier to just get rid of them. By so few I don't just mean the list mentioned but that there could be so few that even listing some of them was considered useful.
But this way they get to avoid any accusations of  censorship and can blame their advertisers

Well, it mentions moderation by "how someone feels about a video". That´s bad news for anyone who debunks claims, cause it rallies against the fluffy marketing-candy speech of what i would call fraudulent people (and it is no news that people running schemes sound convincing - otherwise they wouldn´t be successful in it).

Many of my recent video uploads were demonetized as well but all were repealed successfully after requesting for manual reviews. Wondering if words like "teardown" or "open it up" could be the culprit. It is really annoying indeed.

I had a video demonetized for a a small bit last week, and honestly it was the most innocent video imaginable. It was a video on programming a certain Arduino chip and nothing even close to an offensive word so I have literally no idea how it could have been flagged so it really makes me question how youtube are flagging stuff.

I don't really on mine at all (very small channel), but it really does go to show the importance of YouTubers diversifying their income!
