Dave is moving into a HUGE new lab!

What should he do with all this new space?
Virtual Tour! http://www.tourbuzz.net/public/vtour/display/147151?a=1 (http://www.tourbuzz.net/public/vtour/display/147151?a=1)

Well a hacker space maybe and that gymnasium that Muttley Snickers said
kill 3 birds ;D.idk what you could do with the other 2 floors XD
-
Great one Dave!
I suggest dedicating all levels to the DODO :)
-
Let's have a great big EEVblogFORUM meet, greet and buy/swap Electronics get together!
It should be big enough for that!
You could even make a nice youtube video of the meet up.
You can now receive mailbag deliveries by the cargo container load.
I had a massive container load of electronics goodies, gathering dust.
Since I managed to find the delivery address of Altium, I've already sent it off to you. The shippers tell me it weighs about 30 tons.
It should arrive tomorrow, I can't remember the date.
-
1. Laser tag course.
2. Indoor autonomous aerial vehicle test course.
3. Go-kart track (Needs ventilation)
4. Dodgem cars (Doesn't need ventilation)
5. Laser Interferometry
6. Tear-down of 40 channel mixers in the studio
7. Bigger studio area - with lighting and green room
8. BIG junk box
9. Put your dumpsters outside and label them as free e-Waste drop off (to assist with point 8 )
10. Leverage your physical presence for more influence - to increase dumpster finds of the class of the Keysight scopes
-
start a DaveCAD business :-DD
if only wasn't joke , it will be awesome O0
-
Is it big enough to store the next order of EEVBlog meters?
-
Not fair....using the international date line as a weapon.
-
You could have said that you had to keep it secret until now. But the Dicks Smith takeover has occurred, with your partners, and you needed the new bigger premises, to use as the head offices and centralized mail order centre.

You need to keep blogging for another 3 years Dave. Then it'll be back to Sydney and they'll be calling.
The old Altium mega HQ in Sydney will still be vacant in 3 years, so I"m hoping the owner will be so desperate to sell that I can snap it up for a song. ;D
:)
-
He'd better be hiring more Dave's to crew up the space.
-
Nice, 251 car spaces! That's a different spot for each (working) day in the year.

Turn it into a some kind of school/teaching classes for electronics. Building is perfect for that. I bet peple from all over the world would come there, this blog has made you the most recognizible and the most popular electronics guru in the world. People trust you and that is the most important, they would also trust you in the selection of teachers.
Second, continue selling blog labeled multimeters. Try to expand your offer to more models, including analog ones. If you could make blog branded oscilloscopes that would be perfect because that is the area where you really shine.
-
Not fair....using the international date line as a weapon.
Not even Friday in Australia either, so it's definitely real.

Strange? as that would be more like a mysql or are you hosting with a terrible host like hostgator?
Why is the place still listed as available?
-
Lazy advertisers. Tell them to update their site.
While you're at it, tell them to take down that ugly Altium sign.
-
Why is the place still listed as available?
Real estate agents aren't necessarily quick off the mark in updating listings - unless its a new listing. Even if they do get inquiries on this place, they can offer alternatives. If an interested party has made contact, they'll not waste the opportunity!
-
Nice try Dave. It really was a good effort. Especially the twitter setup :) :-DD

Investigating now, i traced it back to another estate agent.
-
The broker appears to be shorecp.com.au but can not seam to fine the property they.
Got a phone number but i am not in Australia.
-
That is insane lol. Congrats!
-
I see what you did there..

They are awful at updating listings, truly awful, all the agents, not just a few.
I've enquired about places that were leased more than year ago :palm:
Quite frustrating when you are looking.
-
Hey, google tells me it's not yet midnight in Sidney. You are early Dave! Sloppy!
Although the virtual tour link is a nice touch.
Btw. didn't I see a thread, where precisely that was joked about?
-
Strange? as that would be more like a mysql or are you hosting with a terrible host like hostgator?
It's a dynamic allocation problem with the ether. Happens on days like this one.
-
It would take at least one FTE (full-time equivalent) person(s) just to manage/clean that building.
Its a beautiful space, but not very practical for subdivision or more industrial uses like hackerspace or makerspace, etc.
I didn't see any mention of an elevator or disability accessibility, etc.
-
Yeh, right.

You host it from your lab?
-
Looks bloody amazing. Have you considered turning it into a datacentre?
-
Nice try Dave, First thing what gave it away is it was to good to be true.
Second, Below!:

-
To be honest I might have been suckered if you'd said you'd got one floor of it. The whole building would bankrupt you even if you got the lease for free.
-
You sneaky bugger Dave! It ant even April 1st here in Brisbane. You got my all exited for nothing :(.
I was going to ask about the possibility of fans coming down for a tour (I'm still sad) and putting the tour date next to the Sydney maker fair. On the plus side, it reminded me about that, I should probably set a reminder so I don't forget. I've done that 2 years in a row now.
-
With all the
junk stuff in your existing lab it'll take ages to move, possibly a whole year. Maybe completed by 1st April 2017 ?
-
Dave has already admitted to it being a April fools in a PM.
-
Yes, so now spew it all over the place. That's the spirit.
-
Are you gonna do a teardown of that building?
-
:-DD Sure, Dave.
I think you hit the red button on this one, engineer's are not such a believer's :D
-

He did say it fooled the majority.
-
I think you should use it for the production of your newly announced line of EEVBlog solar road surfaces. It's truly amazing how simple the solution to the downfalls turned out to be.
EDIT:Anyone have a clue why this only just turned up in my YouTube subscription feed maybe 10 minutes ago?
-
I think you should use it for the production of your newly announced line of EEVBlog solar road surfaces. It's truly amazing how simple the solution to the downfalls turned out to be.
He can't. He is too committed to make a large quantity of EEVblog branded/recommended batterizers.
-
I think you should use it for the production of your newly announced line of EEVBlog solar road surfaces.
Don't be silly, everyone knows solar roads are stupid. I've done a deal with Batteroo to manufacturers the Batteriser given all the problems they have been having in China!

Might be useful if you are using a anonloug clock.

I hope you ship them in pink anti-static bags. And if I buy 4+ Batteroos, I get a free anti-static wrist strap.
-

Or a wireless one if you get 8+.

Reporting this glitch too lol :D

Better still include the free 9V version, or ill be very disappointed
-
I'm glad it's not true. I'd hate to see you going through your own dumpster.
-
There:

-
Damn if you'd AfterEffects'd that in i'd have been suckered
-
Turn it into a big place selling fried fish.
or maybe a storage place for billions and billions of batterizers feeding the sydney power grid.
-
Every floor except the top one, will be full of stacks and stacks of not really useful old oscilloscopes and broken down Sincair C5's in about 6 months.
-
Nice ???
-
Hi Dave,
Nice find, I think you should latch on the Federal Government initiative on ideas and innovation boom. Maybe concentrate on the electronics industry giving startups a place to get stuff off the ground.
Malcolm
-
Is the part about the building being vacant for the past 4 years true? It is really sad if that is true, because it is a really nice building.
-
Now you can finally carry on with your dream of selling solar roads, with batterizers in them for efficiency, of course! :-DD
For real though, place looks insane
-
The rent is one thing, but what about the coat of keeping the lights on?
When Altium released you a few years back, I hope you said as you left "You just wait, in a few years I'll be running thisnplace!"
-
Price for the 2nd floor only seems to be about AUD 385000, so the whole shebang probably goes for more than a million AUD.
Youtube must be paying well, or is it patreon? ;D
-
The rent is one thing, but what about the coat of keeping the lights on?
I don't think Dave is going to turn on the lights or the heating. He'll take it apart instead.
-

I PM'ed him, and he explained how he paid for it.
He managed to find 31+2=33 $15,000+extras Keysight scopes just lying in a dumpster nearby, and managed to either swap/barter them or sell them, to pay for the rent. That is why the Keysight prizes, haven't shipped yet.
Lower down in the PM, Dave says "please keep this secret". Oops...
Sorry Dave.
-
Nice one, Dave
Though if I had the money, I'd probably move down there in a heartbeat.
(I knew it was too good to be true, but would have been nice had it been.)
-
Glass building. Fill with water. Place chicks swimming inside and let it be big april pool :-)
-
Since it has a great view, convert part of the building into apartments? Use Kickstarted for funding the purchase and renovation?
Convert part of the building and move your family in?
-

Probably those 3$ Shenzhen Special multimeters he sells for 300$ a piece :-DD
When the company I work for moved to a different location I looked into renting the old workshop area. Turns out with my budget I could basically just get a single parking spot in the garage. It was a cheap generic building in a shitty location. No wonder the vacancy rate of office/light industry buildings is so bad.
-
Hey Dave.,
You can make it into a hack (not a typo) space.
But I have feeling Dave is going to have "surprise expenses" this weekend and will have to immediately down-size again.
ps. A good one Dave. You had me "hook, line" but not sinker. When it is tooo good to be true, I smell bullshit. ;)
-
Made an account to say you fooled me at least. Forgot about the time difference between here and Aus, only realised when reading this thread.
D'doi
-
Subrent for students, p&d developers, start-ups and u have a tech center!!!! Congrats... Sorry for been in the other side of the world (Brazil, where the only thing that happens here is bad politics), and just pass by to say congrats!
-
Don't turn it on, take it apart! (Joke or not, you can still make a teardown, only difference being that you don't need to put it back together)
Even though it sounded too good to be true i automatically believed it for a sec and thought you must be crazy thinking you could use all that area enough to make it pay off. Only after checking my calendar and realizing the time difference i was like: :palm:
Good one!
-
Empty for 4 years? Hmm... what are the squatting laws like in Oz? We could have an international band of hippy electronics nerds shacking up in the place. Only rules of joining the commune are you bring lab gear, components, food, and your own sleeping bag. Yeah, some toiletries too. I can imagine all that nerd sweat stinking the place out. :-DD
-
Thats building is huuuuuuge. Awesome Dave :D
Can't you rent out a part to a local makerspace or some Electrical engineering students? Pays for part of the building and it's always handy to have them around. :)
*Sighs, I should have looked at the calendar :-X Press that nice big red button for me Dave :-DD
And you just had to put a spoiler in the very first post instead of just deleting it, right?
:palm: :palm: :palm:
-
Excellent score, Dave!
You should turn it into your very own chip fab. Then you wouldn't need to keep working on that chip printer.
-

If anyone's hungry, don't worry.
I will bring a plentiful supply of chips, bread(board), Banana(plugs), vitamins/minerals (such as copper(wire) and Iron(cores) ), and plenty of Raspberry flavoured PIes.
-
Did you have to pay extra for these guys? Or did they come with the building? :-DD I see there are plenty of folks in the virtual tour pics.

Shame - I thought the April fool this year would be Dave getting one of the first Batterizers off the production line for tear down and review.
Still, maybe you could do that next year
-
I forgot OZ is a day ahead of US. Did anybody else have the thought of who the hell paints a building black in a hot sunny environment? No wonder Altium were hemorrhaging money. the A/C electricity bill alone must have been the GDP of a small nation in that place!
-

Nah, nobody would have been fooled by that.
-
Black Rustenburg Granite, and what is not black granite is glass, probably not with an IR reflective coating of gold on it either. Must have a nice big set of Sulzer water coolers on the roof or out at the rear as well to dump the heat into the ambient. 2kW fan motor per unit, and a nice 2kW water circulation pump along with the 20kVA of compressor load as well.
-
Every floor except the top one, will be full of stacks and stacks of not really useful old oscilloscopes and broken down Sincair C5's in about 6 months.
I completely agree :-+
-
It would be funny if Dave really move to this plave and choose this date to fool us all ;)
That would become a biiiiig rail way track (maybe a H0 based "tube post system"), manny new work benches and a imense pile of scr.... ahhh priceless antiques.
-
It would be funny if Dave really move to this plave and choose this date to fool us all ;)
Crossed my mind too, but unless he found himself a big sponsor (Altium, maybe ;) ), I don't think that's going to happen. But it would be a nice surprise, though...

sublease space to Batteroo... They could probably use an office down under.
EDIT: Now, THAT would be funny.
-
Logic says it can't be true.
You would have to dumpster dive your own dumpster, which I don't think would work. Or at least would not be so surprising.

I'm in talks with Batteroo about manufacturing them in-house for them, given all the problems they have had in China!

Well, for about 3 years they had a handful of Oz staffers still using it whilst still trying to rent it.
Sad for a building designed for 300+
No one wants that big of a building in Belrose.
-
Had me going there for a while, quite a while -doh! :palm:
Good one Dave.
-
Hey Dave. Did you deleted my post?

What are you talking about no one wants to be in Belrose???
Wikipedia says Paul Hogan lives there! He's a national treasure!

Yep.
As a limited time offer, killjoy posts get deleted.

Sorry... It was not my intention, once the others discovered first...kkkk :-+

He actually had me going there until he mentioned he got the whole building. I was ready to believe he'd leased a quarter of a floor.
-
If it were real you could do your own Sparkfun or Adafruit type thing. Fill it up with parts and design your own doodads to sell. I'm sure you could fit plenty of pick-n-place machines, ovens, and whatnot.
I've been watching Dave since he was back in his garage. So it would be cool to see him go from there to that big building. I wish it were real, it would be cool. Maybe some day, Dave! ;)

And here I thought you'd move (seriously) into something more like this:
http://www.realcommercial.com.au/property-offices-nsw-castle+hill-501894990# (http://www.realcommercial.com.au/property-offices-nsw-castle+hill-501894990#)
Strikes me you get the advantage of lab+bunker+industrial/shipping type workshop to add to the office
-
More space to store coffee tins filled with couch feet.

Yep, lousy for transport as many have found out. The occasional bus and that's about it.
And unless the Guvmint was planning on building apartments in Garrigal NP, the population density there is very low (which is the attraction of the area).
Better off leasing it out as upmarket stables, as there are loads of wealthy horse owners in that area! :)
-
Still trying to figure out who in fact is the real person or company to have leased the building? (Yes someone has lased it according to Shore Commercial Property)
-
Using Google street view to look down the road where that Altium place is located, everything seems to be for sale or for lease. Must be a real black spot.
-
Strange? as that would be more like a mysql or are you hosting with a terrible host like hostgator?

Make sure to have a war room.
Just to be able to say: "Gentlemen, you cant fight here. This is the war room."
And have a room for the Microchip-Atmel integration team.
-
We still don’t know if given the opportunity whether Dave would actually occupy the site based on the travel distance and perhaps other unknown factors, anyway one of my few luxuries in life nowadays is the forum and also a number of Youtube sites so today I took out a lottery ticket in case they decide to sell, not sure if four million will cover it but it should go close, so people just for luck cross your wires and hope for the best.
-
I bet altium are pissed off, more pissed off than if it was for real. With the sister getting married and everything i forgot it was my birthday and april fools.
-

Yes Altium are furious. So furious that they have shelved/cancelled plans to give all EEVblog moderators, free for life (£5,000), Altium PCB licences. I guess know one is affected by that ?
Err, whats your problem ? I don't quite see why your launching a personal attack on me. Or is that strange humor ? never said i wanted a copy, just that I asked how much. Most people won't get the refference you know.

It was an April 1st JOKE!
But I agree, others may NOT get the reference. So I have removed the post, as a precaution.

I don't buy tickets in anything under $10M now.
You know, being Sydney and all.

Oh, yea bit specific. No worries. No need to delete posts, we've explained it.

Oh, yea bit specific. No worries. No need to delete posts, we've explained it.
Modern means of communications, such as emails and forums, make lots of opportunity for misunderstandings to arise.
Also I tend to get the impression, that what we find funny/humorous in the UK, is somewhat different to the humor in the USA, and some other countries.
-
Just given in to the dark side and started replying to people on YouTube that this is all true.
I think my soul just escaped like magic smoke :P |O
-
IT'S A COUP! Unbelievable.
Dave, sublet it to the Australian electronics R & D industry. It could become a EE technology park. Electronics only. No software only businesses, just electronics and firmware development companies. Get funded by the government too, as part of the so-called push to reinvigorate the electronics industry in Australia.
I would be tempted to move down to Sydney from up here in Melbourne to run my electronics business there.
Dave, you won't lose. (Except you might have a lot of lawn mowing to do!).
Hang on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's April fool's day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
May be something like this:
This is the garage where HP started.
Jay_Diddy_B
And that is how HP will end up. They lost the plot ever since Carly Fiorina took over.
-
Nice going Dave, you got me....that one day lag did it me in....
-
Congratulations with your new building Dave! I hope you manage to grow out of it real quick!
IMHO one floor should become a model railroad!
-
With all the unused space, you could build a monstrously HUGE fish tank!
-
Hi Dave, Once you move in to the new Lab, We need to see a tear down of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UWbASEi7_o&feature=player_embedded#t=0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UWbASEi7_o&feature=player_embedded#t=0)

Dave could rent out space to electronic firms with the condition that Dave is allowed to make YT videos of their work. It would be a tremendous win win for everyone.
-

Add also that all building dumpsters traffic has to pass through his inspection.

Dave would need to add a health hazard alert in large bold letters at the beginning of that tear down video: "Warning! Might contain Ghostbusters 2016 material."

LAN parties?
EDIT: But the old fashioned way with 10BASE2, T-pieces and terminators -- Spend the first 3 hours diagnosing connection issues until you get the shits and just solder the 50 ohm resistor directly onto the two end NICs.
-
This thread is sooooo funny. LMAO. :-DD The "just kidding guys" in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...........
-
I guess we'll first have a video where Dave does a tour and shows his minions working in every department doing mailbag items (including the Dundee knife), dumpster diving, equipment teardowns (including Dave's coffee maker), skate boarding on solar roadways... did I forget something?
-
Was it joke or what ) ?
-
Why would it be a joke? Dave has made absolutely millions from his Youtube videos, the monthly rental on that place is like pocket money for him! It'll just take him a few days to move everything in to the new space and sort the decorating out.
-
Mwahahaha, too bad, that old office with the big windows looks nice. ^-^

Not to mention all the money from the back alley deals with Big Battery!

well i fell for it , didnt even think about the date
so nice one dave well done :-+
-
Using Google street view to look down the road where that Altium place is located, everything seems to be for sale or for lease. Must be a real black spot.
That's because it's a business park built away from transport links and population centres. Apart from the hardware store in the area, everything else is pretty quiet there.
-
Was it joke or what ) ?
Oh course. There has been a long tradition at least in past electronic magazines of the past era to publish a realistic sounding story that was not so outlandish as to be totally unbelievable, but if true a real zinger of a story. This tradition has spread to the internet as magazines are pretty much a thing of the past.

Who remembers when Dick Smith towed an 'iceberg' into Sydney Harbour?

If this were intended as an April Fools joke, then posting the video on the 31st of March makes this an ultimate fail. :palm: :palm: :palm:

Hint: It passes between Russia and Alaska.

With Sydney house prices at bargain basement prices how could Dave not afford that? ;) ;) ;)

We didn’t win the lottery although we did manage to get three out of the six numbers correct on a randomly selected ticket called a quick pick, no prize at all unfortunately.... :wtf:
At the risk of taking liberty and speaking for other here, I/ we promote only responsible gambling practices, beer and strippers are a different can of worm’s altogether.... :P

ie time zones
FYI you can set your forum "clock" under your profile to be the same time as Dave's. I found this to be more useful (maybe not fall for a date fool) than my own local time, so I just re-set mine to Sidney time.
The problem with YT April Fools joke - is for years people will be driving to that building to meet Dave. I can just imagine how many will drive around it looking for a way to get in. And future occupants will have to post a sign about this.

Australia, not Austria. Dave is UTC+10, Austria is UTC+1 ;-)

For the purposes of this element of the thread - try UTC+12

How long until more space is needed? :-DD :-DD

Hmmm...didn't know Dave was into so much tube gear!!! :D , Love the pallet of CRO's though... classic :-+

He wasn't, but now that he has all that space to heat....
-
We moved to a new floor with 3 times more space. It only took about 6 months until we ran out of space again. No change in personnel count.
You know, since you have all the space, you can run more projects. (no you cannot)
-
There are several variants of Murphy's Laws that have this common concept:
"[Whatever the subject] ... expands to fit whatever space is available, so that more space is always required."
-
Calm down, everything is just going according to the Law [Thermodynamics, II]: entropy can only grow!

Dave is in Australia, not Austria
Austria = Big moutans + snow
Australia = Cangoroos + a big dessert like area
Winter in Australia is the time when Dave switches from bare feet to sandals ;)

It's a lot worse than that. It's when I switch from shorts to jeans (mostly).

My favourite was the mercury filled speaker cables!
I should try and dig that one out of the archives...

Glad it's just an April fools. The dumpster dive videos would have become very boring :)

For the benefit of our overseas visitors, this is mostly sarcasm. Sydney's house prices are amongst the most expensive in the world, relative to local income.

I live in Sydney, furthermore, I live within 20 minutes driving distance of the old Altium building in the video.
At the time of posting the video, Sydney was still in AEDT so UTC+11 which is only beaten by a few other countries, with the highest being UTC+14. So, posting this on the 31st of March UTC+11, it would have been live on the 30th of March in other countries.
Why do you say for me to go and learn geography?

Why do you say for me to go and learn geography?
It was already past midnight in Kiritimati when I posted, way past in fact. I'm very careful about such things because I know the anal retentives like to complain about it.
Kiritimati is currently 4 hours ahead of Sydney (3 back when we had DS)

All your Kiritimati fans will be pleased to hear that.... If you have any :)

This Forum is global. Date and time issues between members is not a mystery.
The original post was made at a time when the date was April 1, somewhere on the planet, which would seem to be valid for a global forum.
Just my 2 cents.
-
Yes I agree, with a global audience you have to start somewhere.

I don't know if I'm uniquely prescient, but around the last week in March I was strongly expecting April to occur soon. So when I saw unlikely-looking statements I definitely considered the possibility of April fool jokes. Anyone who didn't was proper fooled, and shouldn't complain!

Your near Sydney tho?
-
Dave is about 25km (give or take) from the Sydney CBD.
-
Does it really matter when it was posted with respect to your local timezone? Friday was the 1st here in the UK, so it appeared a few days before, but you know that somewhere it will already be the 1st! :palm:
-
It wasn't days before, just hours - and how many hours depended on where in the world you are. From minus a couple (for those east of NZ) to plus 20 or so for Hawaii.
(It's late here - so apologies for not being more precise.)

Glass building. Fill with water. Place chicks swimming inside and let it be big april pool :-)

Spooky!
Did Dave just use the 'magic' within his finger to change the reflection? (perhaps he has absorbed too much of the released 'magic' smoke over the years!) :wtf:
Perhaps Herr R aus B was right? :scared:

Everyone knows that glass can be used as a delay line. It just took a bit longer for the text in the glass to catch up!

How do you see the tags of youtube videos?? I don't see tags there! ???
I knows this thread is now old, but I use a Chrome extension called "Tags for YouTube™". You can also find them in the page's source code under keywords.

fraud!!! :-DD
It's NOT a fraud.
He has had to cancel the order/contract for the building, because he discovered that the height of the building is TOO low, for his later planned, equipment survivability from being thrown from the top of the building, test videos.
A rumor is floating about, that he is trying to acquire a new, 300 metre high skyscraper, for later test videos. (N.B. this post may be a joke).

Is Dave a boating enthusiast?

Hi Dave, Once you move in to the new Lab, We need to see a tear down of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UWbASEi7_o&feature=player_embedded#t=0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UWbASEi7_o&feature=player_embedded#t=0)
Dave would need to add a health hazard alert in large bold letters at the beginning of that tear down video: "Warning! Might contain Ghostbusters 2016 material."
But I loved the original GB's... I just hope it doesn't become like Star Trek©™ with their TOS, TNG etc...
-
Is Dave a boating enthusiast?
I'm sure he's not.
-
Ugh, I just watch on Youtube Via Kodi, I was waiting to see a tour of this massive lab! Aww man. :P
-
Is Dave a boating enthusiast?
No.
