Q&A - Video Editing
« on: July 18, 2013, 07:47:59 am »
Dave answers some question from his 5 hour live show about getting help with editing video for the blog, a co-host, slow Youtube uploads, and big productions like the Ben Heck show.

IMHO, your video editing and audio is just fine, content > production bling.    :-+

Have you considered a bicycle? You probably have a bike already.

Yes, I have a bike.
But I don't find it that convenient, I prefer walking.
I do ride it to the gym occasionally.

No need to change the way you do things.

The point I was trying to make in this video was there is that there is very little (or even negative) benefit in trying to change the way I do things.

Actually, that's not quite true, as I am about to offer shorter simpler version of the blog, or a new segment if you will, called the EEVblab, where I auto upload the video direct from my camera to my channel. One shot, no editing, no production values. As absolutely bare bones as you can get, more in the traditional style of daily video blogging.
This will allow me to more easily produce simple single take videos on whatever topic people want. Probably mostly just rants and quick updates etc.

Dave - agreed on all the production & editing points.

Good art (including producing videos) is neither democratic nor best done by a committee.  Instead it's totalitarian, even though artists may be collectivists in their politics.

A creative person with a vision must be in control of as much of the process as possible to fully articulate it.  That's impossible in an organisation but feasible as a freelancer.

Completly different to industrial mass production where you want to split jobs into reproduceable modules so you can get the benefits of specialisation, put in processes that anyone can follow and outsource bits if wanted.

Some interesting metrics came up at 3:58 (and 14:05)

1.5 hr footage + 1.5 hr editing time = 1 hr finished product (for 60 000 views in first year)

In other words:

* 67% approx footage used in final video
* 1:1.5 product: editing time ratio
* 20 000 views per production hour in first year (excluding non-footage time & uploading)

To compare, one of mine might be:

0.5 hr footage + 2 hr editing time = 0.1 hr finished product  (for 3 000 views in first year)

In other words:

* 20% approx footage used in final video
* 1:20 product: editing time ratio
* 1500 views per production hour in first year (excluding non-footage time & uploading)

Some big differences (in Daves's favour).   Would be interesting to compare the 'vital stats' of others who produce videos.

You are not even fancying an assistant, responsible for cleaning the lab, restocking the fridge and the part drawers, brewing the first coffee in the morning, typing your correspondence, fetching the stuff from the PO box, arranging any kind of shipment you have, and of course having to vanish the moment you enter the lab?
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

Cleaning probably joins video editing as something best not outsourced.

Finding stuff in your own mess is usually easier than finding it in other people's tidiness.

This is especially for people with good visual/spatial memory which is disrupted when someone else moves stuff in the guise of tidying.

Yes, I think I'm pretty efficient at it.
Bare in mind that 1.5hrs of raw footage takes more than 1.5hrs to shoot, there is a fair bit of dead space in between starts and stops just thinking about stuff, checking stuff, changing lenses and camera angles 20 times etc.
Take single shot electronics video bloggers like w2aew. I'd be guessing he'd spend a similar amount of total time as me shooting some of those videos with those prepared notes and diagrams he has. Trading off extra pre-work for more efficient single shooting time. I don't see any huge advantage in that myself, but people prefer to work in different ways.

I think that's probably a worst case figure. Let me get some real stats...
Kodak teardown: 53:34 raw footage, 39:37 finished. 73%
481 mailbag: 45:31 raw, 40:53 finished. 88%
490 peak detector: 52:55 raw, 35:03 finished. 67%
So my guess was about right.
Sometimes I do stupid stuff and forget to press stop, so I get 10min of blank video or something  |O

Dave - you do just fine doing what you do on your own. You are your own brand. Keep up the good work.

Considering in TV and movie land it can take an hour to edit a one minute scene it's super efficient.

Also, I wanted to clarify what I think they were trying to say about doing it remotely, I think you got it but I wanted to make sure; you can do what's called offline editing (ironic considering it'd be across the internet) using a lower res copy, do all the edits, then use what's called an edit decision list to apply those edits to the full amount size copy locally, then render and save. It's great when working with a computer that sent can't handle the full size copy too (like if you're working with 4k).

Not saying you should do it, I agree it'd be silly to hire an outside editor. Though a lab assistant might help, I'm open for relocation.

Yes, that is what I thought someone was alluding to at one point.
That low res stuff would still have to stream/copy from my machine, chewing up my limited bandwidth, plus all the other downsides that go along with it as I mentioned.
Yes, there are ways to have someone else do the editing I really really wanted to, but the point is, it's pointless.

I figured. I just didn't get what they were saying about transmitting the screen clicks, was someone suggestions editing over VNC? That'd be a nightmare. It's hard enough editing someone else's work when you have a story board and a script, I'd be overwhelmed trying to divine what someone's intention was just from a bunch of video clips, and doing it over the Internet would just compound that.

Yes, that's what several people were getting at, using remote desktop to actually use the editor on my machine using the local files.
I've done EDA work from home via remote desktop and it sucked arse. It worked, but I was very unproductive as it was so unresponsive. Doing that for real time video editing gives me nightmares.

The thing is, with stuff like 4k coming up, professional equipment (lots of $$$) is moving in that direction - at least that's what I have been told. Powerful server holding the raw video data and capable of providing a low res version. Then remote workstations. It is not just a remote desktop, it is the editing split in to a client/server application, optimized for working over a network.

Not cheap and not easy to pull off. In fact, one big gun, the venerable BBC, just recently failed miserably to pull it off on a large scale for the BBC, sank 100M GBP, lied to their trustees and got caught http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22847986

Hi Dave, A agree with some, you are doing fine and that enthusiastic unscripted approach would be lost.
One thing I miss is the loud rants on occasions, maybe making some video at home where you can make a lot more noise would be great. But not expected if it is going to wake up Sagen.
