RIGOL DS1052E pricing
« on: May 01, 2011, 12:19:57 am »
I just searched around for the Rigol Scope DS1052E.   I ran across an outfit called Door2doorshop.com.  They are selling it for $299.00 USD.

Has anyone ordered from them?   Is this some sort of refurb house?  Any feedback would be helpful.

Most other sellers are asking $399.00 USD.

Is this an outfit to avoid?

THANX

I looked up some old posts and it sounds like you should stick with relatively local providers.  Easier to deal with.  Warranty is provided.  Better support.

Not worth the risk for money supposedly saved up front.

PLUS.    I see from Youtubers and EEVLOGers that there seem to be quite a few issues with the Rigol DS1052E scope.

Flashing screens.  Lockups when using certain functions.  Other functions not working at all.   Settings changing during certain operations.

Is this thing really a good scope????   OR is this thing like Microsoft product.   Send it out and have users find all the bugs.

THOUGHTS????

Authorized European distributors:

http://eu.rigol.com/html/about/Distributors.shtml

Expect to pay more.

Regarding service and support, well, my experience is Rigol isn't a champion in those. Maybe some of the distributors do better on their own initiative. However, if they show the same behavior as Rigol you are screwed when you need support.

And friend and I bought two from MCS test equipment-I think they have someone on this forum. One of the scopes was rattling when it arrived and was replaced in a couple of days. Excellent service; however as Bored said, it does cost more

I was expecting 50~70 euros more expensive than DealExtreme for example. The difference is about 250+ (without the shipping cost) euros...

A LOT like Microsoft -- the problems are in the software, not the hardware.  :D

The problem is that Rigol has been so focused on closing the door on the 100MHz hack, that they have been rushing out buggy firmware "upgrades" in an attempt to lock it down. Fortunately, it is again possible to downgrade the firmware to 2.04 SP1, which seems to cure all evils -- even the flashing screen.

There are several official distributors in Europe:

http://www.rigol.com/html/about/Distributors.shtml (remember to set the region to europe). For example MCS Test Equipment kindly made me an offer for a DS1052E: 281£ (315 EUR) excl. VAT + 35£ (39 EUR) shipping via FedEx.

I bought mine in the US from an official distributor for 350$ (236 EUR) excl. VAT + 20$ (13 EUR) shipping to Europe.

cons:
Shipping took 23 days
Warranty claims will be problematic (I didn't care)
I paid 57 EUR customs duty. (you pay customs on shipping cost too!)

pro:
still enough price difference (~100 EUR) to buy a PICkit3 and other things. Reason enough for me back then.

Just don't fool yourself to believe that you won't be paying customs.

I bought mine from the local Swiss distributor (electronics.maxdata.ch). More expensive than "elsewhere", but:
1. Low shipping charges & quick 2-days shipping,
2. No customs, VAT and other taxes
3. Service & language
All above is well worth the price difference and helps local shops to earn their living. Stay away from cheap offers!

You may also want to hear of a number of defects that are not easy to fix by users.  An authorized dealer can exchange a defective unit for you.

I ran a poll, but the numbers are small, the results showed 1/10 had a problem and it can't be returned.

See the thread by A Hellene on his adventures with a new 1052e and a noise problem.  Its still ongoing.

Best Wishes,

In case anyone is wondering, the lowest price they can be had is $255 USD. Most sellers on ebay buy it for that and sell for 399 with free shipping. So if you found a deal for $300, trust me, he is not losing any money on that sale.

So if you found a deal for $300, trust me, he is not losing any money on that sale.

(USD300 is around 1950 yuan with mean value. But also this is not whole truth. ebay rate is different, also ebay take lot of fees... if you pay USD300 to chinese seller with paypal (ebay own it) how much he/she really get. Today you vcan not put anything (business) to ebay without fees. What if this chinese seller want draw this money to his hand from paypal... hehe...
Everyone know what are taobao prices.  Good reliable sellers is difficcult to find... rogertianxian is one very serious trusted seller example.. (but you need someone who is between you and taobaoseller... how much taobaoseller really get real money if he sell with 1650 yauan... and remember also look fees... not only "price".

This is not for person who write this... this is common and writer give only some idea for this.

Of course there are peoples in China who want make social work for poor western peoples. ;)
If people who sell just do not loose real money but where is salary for working?

Before I have buy (Rigol's) directly from China (my family - friends in China help buy and shipping to my country)
I know exactly what is price in China so that chinese seller can get just one day food when he sell one. In reality it is not any kind of business. There is not possible to do anything for customer care or no any risk money if one damaged in postal system.

Of course all want buy so that seller who make also work do not get nearly anything.

Some seller who buy high volumes directly from Rigol may get littlebit more but also he need put lot of money to this and risk is also currency changing.

After shipping to my country and after customs/VAT price is more. Then I do work for selling, give customer service, all nights answer customers questions, meet many peoples who want look this,, then... oh maybe next month my mom promise I can buy... etc.  I can tell that I get maybe one euro for every hour what I have work for this selling. Then peoples tell me that I have high prices becouse it is in China this price. Well... good luck and buy from China or seller who do not care anytrhing after he/she get your money...you are just alone if something happend.  Yes, I have stop this Rigol selling. No one want pay money to people who do work for this... only if he is working as doing free social work.
yes, some day some young man cry becouse he have visit me and look Rigol... then he was clever, he buy it from ebay or some "grey" dropshipper... after one month his scope "buff" no display.  He ask seller, no answer, he send letter to Rigol... no answer.

Now he is happy hantek owner. Also he pay this work what I do for care customer and for posibility that some warranty fail... yes now he know... if something happend... one call to me and after some hours or days he have repaired scope. But, this potential work and done work... I want money as all peoples who are working.  These are not as box of potatoes. Working include testing, (yes I do full quality control for every single unit before sell. I answer questions, (but only for buyers) how I can measure this.  I write some simple help texts for some special things with my own language...  before people buy he can come and test if model is ok for his needs... here we can simulate nearly all needs.

Of course many peoples buy directly from cheap seller. Most times all go ok. Most of peoles can survive themselves, they can find info from other peoples etc... example from this forum. (also I have tell many my "Rigol time" customers that please look eevblog forum... you find answer.)

But all who have buy Hantek from me they know that what ever happend I try help them. I have use huge number of hours so that I know this product enough for giving customer care... also slowly I want my salary about this whole work. Only way to get salary is add this to selling prices and also add some risk value. If something fails in warranty time... I need spare parts. Yes I get from hantek but not without work and also small money. If someone do not understand how all business work... well... yes all we do free...haha.

But... these who ask me that why your price is this... in China I have see they are more cheap...  so your price is too high.
My answer is simple.. go and buy - it is easy to send money. I hope you are lucky.  If you are not lucky I can do service for you but it is minimum 50 euro per hour... normally more. (normal electronics service pricing)

maybe there are still peoples who think that of course there are peoples who do not need money, only working.
Very soon peoples in the world can see that chinese do not want working without money. Is it surprice?

Maybe someone want free lounch?  Of course there are lot of free lounches...

I needed the scope right away... and bought it from Batronix in Germany.  € 299 with free shipping in EU; 30 day trial period; and 3 years warranty.  It took 2 days to get to the Netherlands.  Yes, I paid more than from the cheap Chinese sellers - but trust me, a 3 year warranty (which will be honored) is a good thing to have on anything that has a back-light - as the 2 1/2 year old HP LP2475w monitor (with a failing back-light - but a 3 year warranty) I'm writing this on attests to.

But that's HP these days. The company pretty much went down the toilet. Your love for the HP warranty will dwindle when you start to make use of it.

Your hyperbole is humorous.  Any modern company that makes thousands of products tends to have successes and failures.  In any case, the LP2475w monitor is highly regarded, extremely well-reviewed, and does not (as far as I can determine online) have a serious history of problems.  I personally think it's a great IPS monitor for the price, and have loved using it.

Anyway, I've just been informed by HP that the monitor in question, bought 2 years 8 months ago in the USA (I'm in the Netherlands now) will be picked up (as a replacement unit is dropped-off) in the next couple of days.  So, no, in fact, my 'love' of the warranty has not dwindled.

And I'm not quite sure if your comments meant you believe that warranties in general are worthless to consider when buying a product - which was the point I was trying to make, and that I still stand by.

To be frank, you sound like an HP salesman. And as it is typical with HP these days, your claims and the HP reality don't match.

I recommend you just spend an hour on the phone with HP support. Some time ago HP moved support to Bulgaria and hired the most clueless bums they could find there to man the phones. After an hour with them on the phone you are ready for murder.

In terms of my claims and reality, I never claimed to be in love with HP products or their warranties - I claimed that this particular monitor is very good (please feel free to prove me wrong with facts/links) - but I was happy to have a 3 year warranty on it, which HP is honoring without a problem - which negates, as far as I'm concerned, your initial comment.  I can't attest to their other current products, warranties, or support - which they have or haven't given to other customers - or to you in particular - and, frankly, I don't really care.

What I was actually trying to discuss was whether it was worth saving € 40 - 50 to buy something with an LCD and back-light without a warranty - or at least a reasonably usable warranty.  Every LCD monitor I've owned has started having issues eventually - more than once within a 3 year span.

@Neganur - it sounds like you might have paid too much to the customs people.  DSOs from China are duty-exempt - so you should have only paid VAT.

I bought mine in the US from an official distributor for 350$ (236 EUR) excl. VAT + 20$ (13 EUR) shipping to Europe.
I paid 57 EUR customs duty. (you pay customs on shipping cost too!)

Afaik I understand. There is no customs duties. Becouse EU have no customs for chinese made digital oscolloscopes.

This 57 eur is just Finland country 23% VAT. It ned pay for grand total including all with shipping.

@cc1960

You might end up being happy with the perks of buying in Europe if you decide to go for Batronix - not the least of which is their 30 day trial period.  I am returning the scope to them tomorrow (after about 25 days) because I'm not happy with the bugs in the latest Rigol firmware - and they haven't been able to offer a solution for me.  This is not a putdown of Batronix at all - they have been very helpful - it's just a problem with Rigol.
