yeah, my dad listens to radio, but he's much older than dave.
(actually dav's  not that old at all...wouldn't expect him to be radio person)
in general radio means zilch to younger folks.
and, frankly, it's probably better, visual is faster and more productive....
the thought of audiobooks and alike....i mean i have to wait for you to......  while i can read that 10x faster....

also, if he would listen to radio, then it would interfere with his....damn...50min audiobooks with video! 

he should transcribe it to written(or 'printed', or 'displayed' today) words!
just to screw with those software transcription programs that can sometimes make you laugh...

I think perhaps there are two confusing messages going on here.

Broadcast radio is still widely used and doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. There is a lot more to radio programming than listening to music. There are news programmes, documentaries etc. Wether Dave listens to the radio or not when working in his workshop is pretty irrelevant as it is his personal taste. When he is recording his videos the last thing he would want is a radio playing in the background. It would be a major PITA distraction and would cause his videos to get takedown notices all the time from copyright holders.

Now if you are asking about radio communications equipment that is a different story entirely. The internet has largely replaced radio as a method for casual communications. Web forums, email, text chat and audio/video chat services fill most peoples needs using the computer they already have instead of buying expensive radio equipment. Radio is something that has a loyal following of enthusiastic people and has played an important part in the development of electronics. However HAM radio is much like classic car enthusiasts in that while the majority of people drive a modern computer based car there will always be a group of people who find something magical about technologies that are no longer main stream. Sometimes amateur radios have been proven to be very useful in disaster situations for example where internet and telephone networks have been destroyed. It is a real shame that the golden days of radio have passed and that the hobby appeals to a much smaller audience than it once did but the landscape has changed.

The whole electronics hobby scene nearly disappeared a few years back thanks to projects like Arduino many new people have taken an interest in the subject.

there are also versions of that with video. humans will probably prefer the latter, if they have the choice, and they do most of the time.
ie even when talking about bbc radio programmes it's hard for me to imagine a younger bloke sitting down just to listen to a radio documentary....

it's essentially a non-intuitive thing for humans to engage just hearing as a mean of learning etc. that's why the radio is a flop, because it's not intuitive most of the time....offcourse while driving it's ideal, but for many other purposes it's just beaten by other media, ie all visual media.
radio-draams were fun....but mainly in a time when you had no tv.
"why should i imagine if i can watch it?" is something most people will ask.

my dad listens to it because he's accustomed to it, not because it's better.
in a same way you'll see most of people in their 50s not really using the web...they're pre-web....he's pre-video...hehe...

frankly, i wonder if radio would survive if you had some other/better way to entertain folks while driving...probably not, but you probably won't find a better way either, so it'll survive...heh...
if younger ones don't replace it with their mp3 playlists...

People in their 50's and higher made the web, and have been using it since it started.

As for radio, it explains a lot why kids don't know/care what is going on in the world. Don't listen to the radio, why be informed? take your chances with the information you find in the net, hopefully it's trustworthy.

As for hearing is non-intuitive, you are right, kids now a days don't listen, they just talk.

It does depend on how many karats your golden ears are, another reason why Dave shouldn't play music in his videos.
Also if you think Steve Aoki is bad go listen to something like " brutal dubstep drops " that will teach ya.

A guy up the street from where I live who  I used to do computer work for had one of these... sadly he passed away and the contents of his house were auctioned off by the family, and to make matters worse, his family had no idea what this was and took it to the local computer recycling depo . I found all this out the day I noticed the house up for auction.

Joking aside, I do think having a clock or some other item that changes state (visually) to be a useful sanity check. From time the camera does appear to lock up and that would give a quick indication of a problem.

As for music no, I like the sound of beeps, fan noise, the crackle of sparks and the odd popping of electrolytics exploding and hitting the ceiling.

Gosh, I've spent so many hours, days making world wide contacts with this transceiver. I was a amateur telegraph operator, mostly active on HF bands. YAESU FT101ZD is hard to find and still expensive.
