Spammers collecting emails from this forum
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:14:41 pm »
I just googled for my MSN address to see if anybody reveals it to non-logged in users. And guess what, this forum is showing MSN addresses, which are valid e-mail addresses in 99% of cases as plain text right in HTML code. Scrapers/spam spiders loves sites like this, and everyone who specified their MSN here should expect to be spammed to death in the nearest future. This should be fixed ASAP.

The address (in fact, all IM usernames too!) should be hidden from non-logged-in users.

It is your own fault. You entered that information in your profile for display. If you don't want it to be available remove the information from your profile.

This information will be displayed throughout EEVblog Electronics Community Forum. If you aren't comfortable with sharing some information, simply skip it - nothing here is required.
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

And guess who provided that information for public display?

More correctly spammers trawl email addresses from any number of public and non public sources. I challenge you to conclusively like your next unsolicited offer of penis enlargement back to this or any other forum.

"Spammed to death"? Somebody has been watching way too much alarmist Television. While spam is a perpetual menace reports of it directly causing actual death or physical injury are grossly exaggerated.

Yes it should, however you are having some issue determining whose responsibility that is. Here is a hint: (2 letter word.) Managing MY spam is ?? responsibility!

Must be?? The whole world MUST rearrange itself to suit your whims? It was you who provided your details. What did you think that was for? So Dave could send you personalised messages in his spare time?
Many avail themselves of the amenity provided from a published address, they take whatever anti-spam measures they consider appropriate for themselves. More important they've managed to do it all without demanding all configurations must be made to suit their personal convenience or inability.

Sorry, but this is a standard installation of SimpleMachines forum. I do not know how to modify it to fix stuff like this.
If you can point me to an existing plug-in that can do it, then I'm happy to install it.

I use gmail and get ZERO spam, and my email address is plastered all over the internet, including Usenet.

Dave.

And do you know how many non-spam emails you are not getting either?

Receiving spam is an annoyance. Not receiving real emails or not having your emails delivered because they are miss-classified as spam can be real expensive.

I can confirm this. If your email has a signature and you send it to several gmail users, you can get a silent ban because their filters pick up repetitive text. Also gmail can nuke your account any time they feel like it, and poof you lost everything unless you have local copies. Using 3rd party email these days is a suicide.
