Title: Sydney Mud Run 2014
Post by: EEVblog on December 06, 2014, 11:42:09 am
Dave drags a Tektronix TDS220 oscilloscope through 7km of mud at the 2014 Sydney Mud Run.
Raising money for the NSW Cancer Council.
Along with Klein Tools MM500 rugged multimeter also:

I'm putting this on the main channel, because so many viewers generously donated.
Shot with an Olympus Tough TG-850 camera.

Well done Dave! Now get some warm water, drink it a lot and rest for the night, so you are chipper for Sunday.

Reminds me of the military "Fun Run" which was pretty much everything but, but at least there you do not have barbed wire.

Ahahah, awesome, Dave! Wish we had events like this here.. In the summer... When it's not as cold as -25 degrees.....

Anyway, can you violate your "don't turn it on" rule on the scope and see if it works without cleaning and so? :)

Great effort Dave, lost too many people I loved to cancer...

Would be interesting to see a teardown of that scope, you may need a roll of kitchen towel and 2 cans of switch cleaner handy though. I bet that after a teardown, clean up it would work again may need a new display. :-BROKE

Hey Dave,
Really enjoyed the video of the mud run and your efforts supporting this amazing cause! Well done! Now be sure to replenish your fluids, get some rest and relaxation. Looking forward to seeing how the scope powers up. I assume you'll open it up first to see if there is any water in it and dry it off? Otherwise it may be interesting to see what happens if there is a short in there somewhere.
Once again, great job!

Well done Dave, much appreciated effort from a cancer survivor. Will be interesting to see if that scope will work again, and how accurate is the meter after all that. :-+

That was quite good audio and video quality considering the conditions.

Is this the event Daily Planet was supposed to cover?

Dave, you are a hero :)  :-+

But I want to see the teardown of that scope after this! It is quite possible that after washing it off and thoroughly drying everything it will still work.

Did I hear right?  Did Dave raise $10k out of a $40k total for the event?

Massive well done to you Dave!

Yes, but they pulled out last minute due to visa problems or some such.

How well did the GoPro copy work?

Got little useful footage from it. Didn't trust the battery to last the event so only switched on when thought it was worthy, but I mostly focused on the other cam that gave the better angle + audio + quality. Waste of time taking it.

As I said, great job Dave  :-+ but I still can't get used to destroying a functional oscilloscope. If you had sold it on the auction, the charity would have had ~300 bucks extra...
It is like a rockstar destroying his guitar ... It's stupid   :-- Just sayin' , I know I am not going to be popular popular for saying this  :blah: . Maybe just a cultural thing.

Don't think I've ever heard Dave's voice go so high as towards the end. Anyone have a spectrograph?

Dave - I gotta wonder....
Are you going to auction off the TDS, bunny suit and multimeter?  Maybe even the cameras?  UNcleaned of course!
Great bragging rights for the winners:
"This oscilloscope helped cure cancer -- and I have the video footage to prove it!"

I had never heard of that MM500 before Dave mentioned it here.  But, I started to look into it.  Very low cost meter for that kind of durability.  I found a video of it being dropped 40 feet!!  Fairly tough meter for under $50.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XL0JtSc-60 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XL0JtSc-60)

But, it looks like it is built for durability, and not a lot of features.  I wouldn't mind seeing Dave hook it up, and see what it can do.  Getting high voltage ratings, high safety ratings, and this kind of durability for under $50 seems like a pretty good deal.
