I was browsing Dave's YouTube channel for a teardown video I remember he made, it was some kind of x-ray machine I think and he at some point was pouring out this gross looking oil from parts of it. Can't find it, I remember it was quite fun, it was a long time ago so maybe it was removed.
Anyway, greetings to all and thanks for any clue.

I remember a video where somebody tore-down a big, oil-filled x-ray transformer - required lifting equipment to take it a part. I think it was one of the "maker" community that made the video. Chris Boden maybe?

Thanks a bunch guys, those were some really interesting videos in themselves, definitely worth a view. But not what I remember. The video I remember was Dave for sure, I guess he was in his old garage lab as I doubt he'd want to go pouring out oil in his nice new clean lab with smart carpeting.
I'll keep ploughing through the older videos and see if it is hidden somewhere. If it wasn't Dave then it really is a case of my memory playing tricks!

Note: if you ever find an x-ray machine and want to tear it down, do your homework first. Some of the old x-ray machines contain a radioactive powder. One such machine contaminated several blocks, and affected hundreds. I don't remember where it happened, but I believe it was India. it was a documentary on the PBS channel.

X-ray machines do not become radioactive. The X-rays are produced by scattering when high-velocity electrons in a vacuum tube hit a target. The greatest danger when handling these machines is if the safety interlocks are defeated, or the beryllium window in the tube is broken releasing beryllium dust.
You are thinking of incidents when radiotherapy machines (which are made for treating cancers, not for imaging) were broken into, releasing their radioisotopes.

Another thing to worry about is if the oil contains PCBs (not circuit boards).
It's really nasty stuff.

They were used in transformer oil for their dielectric and nonflammable properties. Preventing corona breakdown and arc fires in HV transformers is a very good thing. Pity about the health effects.
