What happened to the mailbag segment?
« on: October 12, 2012, 08:59:40 pm »
Dave, did people stop sending you mail after that #353 when you could hardly fit all the mail into the picture, or did you just not have time to shoot a mailbag segment as of late?
Whoa! How the hell did Dave know that Bob is my uncle? Amazing!

It's been slow. I now have 4 items so will do another one soon.

Dave.

Ok. I'm looking forward, and I hope it's not another batch of low quality women's underwear.

Hmmm... I wonder... if he gets enough of it, maybe a new 'pay per minute' section will open? ;)

Dave.

I'd love to send you something, but it'd run me about $50 in just postage alone :/

International postege is steep. From the east to the rest of the planet is cheap though, funny there, the PO must figure that that is a way to make money, by doing volume. The funny thing about post is that international letters and parcels via post are actually no charge items to the sending country unless POD is required.

You may be wrong if I understood you correctly. Universal Postal Union has developed tools to charge the countries which send out more mail than gets sent in. This article is old but I guess it's still pretty much the same:

You could start assembling some of the stuff you got.

People will probably watch that too ;-)

I'd watch that.

For the smaller kits a quick test.
For the more complex and those that requires more explanation perhaps a separate rundown.

There it is, and a quick test of an interesting product to.  ;D

Dave should hook that one up to a lot of stuff.

I thought other people might be as interested in the Ethernet PHY as I was, so here was what I could dig up:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/National-Semiconductor-TI/DP83848J-MAU-EK/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvu8NZDyZ4K0dJXsrhgOOcs

There's also a TI (bought National) page on all their Ethernet chips, but I found none of the links on it worked for me.

http://www.ti.com/ww/en/analog/interface/ethernet.shtml

The magnetics aren't on-chip, I assume they're in the connector itself? Also curious what that ARM chip is running to do TCP/IP since that's not in the chip either.

What kind of things are you interested in seeing in the mailbag?

I personally love the repair/testing episodes.

I have a power supply from my Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ 4disk RAID storage system  that literally blew up when turning it on...after powering it down about 5 minutes prior.  (you know, the pop as the magic smoke escapes...and there was quite a bit of magic smoke.)

Is that something you would be interested in looking at?  I have a replacement coming in the mail, and it is not worth fixing.

But it has the usual bulging capacitors...I am personally curious at what popped finally, and why at turn on, when it had been running continuously for months.

If you would like to take a look, I will look into shipping it...if you are not interested, it goes in the trash.

Mike

When the wall wart on the router did a toasty I did not bother repairing it, just connecteed it to the UPS battery directly. Has no effect on it other than a slightly higher charge current, which is not a worry on this UPS. This though is an old unit, with an isolated control circuit and an earthed battery bank.
