[eBay] new DER EE DE-5000 w/ tweezers, etc, for cheap

No affiliation with the seller, just happened to see it. $46 delivered is a heckuva price, they'll be gone before you know it.

Scam listings. I've seen several like it pop up from time to time, usually in batches. The real ones come from sellers in Japan rather than China, Malaysia, Thailand, etc. Of course, eBay will refund you if it's bogus.

Scammer or hacked account. Look at the seller history and the items that are listed now.

Could be. Or they were overordered/overproduced, there is a glut of them, and they are being cleared out. Happened a few months ago with unmarked AN8008's. The Chinese seem more inclined to use eBay for this sort of thing than other venues.

This seller has it for $65, still a very good deal.

Beware, they are hacked accounts, just make a call to ebay and ask how many times these accounts has been hacked.

For this one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/DER-EE-DE-5000-High-Accuracy-Handheld-LCR-Meter-w-TL-21-TL-22-TL-23-/123260330912
I made that call to ebay, and now in Spain this account is closed:
https://ibb.co/k6yHKJ

And for this other: https://www.ebay.com/itm/DER-EE-DE-5000-High-Accuracy-Handheld-LCR-Meter-w-TL-21-TL-22-TL-23-NEW-/283063892449
Please check this other and compare ad pictures:

I contacted eBay. The rep looked into the seller's account and history, and they see nothing on their side to raise suspicions. The seller is in good standing with eBay and Paypal.

It is not unusual for sellers to copy photos and descriptions from other ads. It happens all the time. There are no eBay rules against it.

Did they look into logins and IP address history?

I have no way of knowing that. She assured me, if something did prove to be amiss, I would be reimbursed in full.

She did say one thing I found interesting. She didn't find this seller's listing behavior suspicious. She said they have numerous sellers in China who don't specialize in anything, they appear to buy large lots of various items and then sell them. Moreso than in the US.

With the volume of scams on eBay, I don't have much confidence in their interpretations. However, as a buyer, your risk is low since eBay will refund you if you don't get what the listing claims.

I'm skeptical because (1) I've tested out some of these kinds of listings and not long after I've paid, I get an email from eBay that they've removed the listing or I have to wait a month for the item not to show up before eBay finally generates a refund, and (2) this account, like others I've seen from time to time, have almost all of their products at around half the price of what other sellers in the same country are selling them despite the products being current models from Fluke, Micsig, Uni-T, etc. (i.e., it's highly unlikely that they're all clearing their distribution channels at the same time to this small number of resellers).

On occasion, there will be a new seller who, in order to get some momentum in their feedback, will sell at cost or even a loss for a short period. I remember a post where someone did score an item from such a seller. My "test" purchases have all ended up bogus, but that's just my experience.

So, if you have the time to spend on such listings, it's unlikely you'll lose money. But most of these, even if eBay can't tell yet, end up being a ruse.

If you do end up making a purchase, do let us know the result. Every one is a learning experience and spotting scams gets better with experience.

I had a similar experience with Ebay. I contacted them for what I am "sure" is a fake listing for an expensive IR-camera. Indicators for fake according to me:

- pictures copied from a recent other auction, including a custom made connection box (unlikely this seller has the exact same one) and a picture only showing the serial number of the camera
- started from 1€, only listed for 3-days, no reserve
- no PayPal excepted, only money transfer
- sellers had no selling history for items like this at all

Yet, Ebay left the item on, and it went for almost 800€. I really hope I am wrong or the buyer is indeed protected in this case, but with the direct money transfer and the high amount, I would be not so sure...

The Japanese sellers generally seem to have their own pictures, or sometimes stock photos.

I gave it a try. Let's see.

The PP recipient is a "北京华泰溢丰国际贸易有限公司" (Beijing Huatai Yifeng Int'l Trading Co., Ltd), and I can't find any company registration information online.

Not all companies in China have an online presence, so it could be legit, but I have no idea if it is just another scam.

Anyway, that's why we pay PP and eBay 10%~15% of cut.

A braver man than I am! I hope it works out and you are rewarded for your bravery! LOL  ;D

Right now I received a call from +49332038510 (ebay), to clarify me that this seller "psypwen" seem ok, nothing weird has been detected or reported, for now.
They also have clarified to me that sometimes they need a time to investigate in detail and take actions.
So, yeah, a real bargain...

Edit: I forgot, the ebay user dannuer was a different history, a total scam...

I'm fairly certain that the eBay guarantee only applies if you paid via Paypal so those people would have lost it all.

I believe that was true when eBay and PP were the same company... but not since they separated. eBay's "buyer protection" is not Paypal-dependent. It does have time limits, though. The claim has to be filed within 30 days of receipt, or of the last estimated delivery date, in the case of items not received.

It still say Paypal only on eBay UK.

I also took one, it worth the try, if fake i will get a refund and to have proof i will record the unpack.
Even if genuine and you don't want the item you can always get refunds, ebay over protect buyers (From my seller experience) and tend to burn sellers.

Yeah, the dannuer one. I started seeing bad feedback last night (shipped lego parts instead of the real product). I guess eBay finally figured it out.

The other seller, psypwen, has a slightly higher price, but still unusually low (likewise with other items from that seller).

In the USA:

https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/questions.html#mbg

Paypal is not required.

They say "eBay Money Back Guarantee covers other electronic payment methods as well, when they are used in eBay Checkout, including ProPay, Skrill, Bill Me Later, credit card, and debit card.". But how does it work? I think they can only protect if payment is made via ebay website. In case of direct transfer to the seller's bank account they can't do anything (I believe).

If you try to scam eBay's cut, then how can you expect eBay to protect your from scammers?

Well spotted!      Too funny!

Ooohhhh. Mine just got marked as shipped.

I’ve got a U1733C Agilent handheld, so don’t need a Der ee one, but if it does actually turn up then I have a cheap for work.

I’m very skeptical about this seller, but I’ve had wins similar to this in the past too.

Yes, and a couple more negatives today. That's it for me. I called eBay and asked them cancel the order. Since he hasn't shipped, they said he has to accept the cancellation.

They did confirm that the account is under investigation. But they also said that the item I bought is still an active listing.

Huh? It seems eBay is trying to play it both ways.

Is it just me or is the seller actually offering only the TL-21 "pod" and not the LCR meter? (despite the last photo).

That would be a pretty normal price for that.

That is a different auction by somebody else. eBay thinks it is a similar item and trying to be helpful. Click the link at the top and you'll see the original auction which is the full DE-5000 kit.

Yes, that ebay thing of pointing you at different auctions is crap, they don’t exactly make it easy to see the original item.
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

Yeah, not only is that redirect annoying, it even breaks (more like misleads you about) some of eBay's existing functionality. For example, when an item is relisted, the ended listing in the watchlist has a link to view the relisted item. If you click it, it gets...you guessed it...redirected to some other item. Way to go, eBay! :-DD

The seller ignored the cancellation request. 9 hours later he posted a tracking number.
I sent him a message, telling him I want to cancel and a refund, why didn't he do it? No response from him (of course).
More neg feedbacks have been posted for dannuer.

Now we get to see what eBay is made of. They told me the seller must comply with a cancellation request made prior to shipping. They appear to be in CYA mode.

Yeah, it's a stupid "feature." However, if it misleads enough people to increase sales, then it's more than likely to stay. Being a monopoly trumps the normal balance that poor usability might've imparted on the situation.

Scammer trying delay tactics. They've hidden their feedback now which is suspicious but one of the earlier comments was that they had resolved the "mistake" by firing the staff member responsible. That was several days ago so they're just using the same excuse again.

Another side of this is, there's nothing to stop the "seller" from posting the same tracking number for multiple transactions "shipped". It is unlikely eBay checks for this.

Is it worthwhile to compare our tracking numbers? If they're the same, then we have some real ammo to present to eBay, and demand in immediate refund.

I'd be very surprised if eBay doesn't validate tracking numbers.

What does "validate" mean?

If it tracks through the shipper's system (in this case, China Post), then its "validated". But that does not include checking the destination address.

Checking that the tracking number is unique in their system is incredibly easy. eBay knows about some shipping companies and will offer to link you directly to the relevant tracking page so they're doing something there.

If there were no checks at all and the scammers could just give out the same invalid tracking number for every auction then they wouldn't even bother shipping worthless junk to people.

Easy? Yes. Do they do it? I bet not.

Another USA buyer sent me his tracking number privately, and it is different than mine. So dannuer appears not to be playing that game.

Something often arrives.  The SWMBO ordered cheap Ecco shoes off a Facebook advert a month ago.  The bank contacted her a few minutes later to ask if she was in China!  They decided to let the transaction through and told her to contact them if it did not arrive.  Just as others reported on Facebook cheap sunglasses arrived, recorded delivery, last week.   I'll have to start nagging her to get on to bank.  Needless to say it will not be a simple as a disputed PayPal transaction.

And before the feminists complain, I once ordered a projector screen from China, got a tracking number for the order.  But received an envelope containing glass beads.  Did not take long for PayPal to refund, others who ordered got the same.

Yeah, we actually do have a 50-cent coin. It's large and rarely used in everyday life. I haven't come across one in many, many years. Using one might get a reaction similar to using a $2 bill ("Is this fake?").

I was one of those suckers who bought the DER DE-5000 and got lego pieces in the mail instead :palm: and I didn't even see this thread, lol.
It's okay, the seller refunded.

Anyways, if anyone is looking for this meter to get on sale, I would use the site-wide eBay coupon: PRONTO15
on this listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/282040803373

to get the meter for sub $90, not tee shabby

Note that it ends today, but if you don't get it today, it will probably pop up next month, regarding the promo code that is

I received mine today; a 3x3 padded envelope with nothing in it. Customs declarations was for a "toy" with $5 value. A call to eBay and they refunded immediately.
I asked the CS rep how many buyers did the guy defraud. I guessed 18. She said no, only 17.
Only.
Just the cost of doing bidness for eBay, I suppose.

No, thats just if seller is new on paypal.
After some success transactions paypal release money instantly after a sell, still you able to open a dispute under the time

I just received mine from USPS. It's a small, flat bag with a poorly forged US 50 cent coin. I don't even know there is such a thing.
I guess I will have to discard this to prevent being sued for importing forged currency.

I got mine last week, but overlooked it until yesterday.  It's pretty funny, gold colored, with "LIBFRTY" on one side and "epluribusonum" on the other.  Legally I think we're supposed to turn them in to the authorities.  But I plan to keep mine as a novelty if the seller doesn't want me to ship it back.  In that case I'll turn it in to the cops and get a receipt.  In your case, I'd  wipe it off carefully, wrap it in toilet tissue and throw it in the trash away from your home or work.  I *think* if you mark it "counterfeit" it is legal to have it.  But the risk is not a lawsuit, but a criminal proceeding.  You definitely don't want that.

I tried to find someone selling them on Alibaba.com, but did not find an exact  match.  If you have small hands they are a good size for coin tricks.  I did see a set of 4 "silver" and two "gold" coins but with different dates and better workmanship.  But still obviously fake if you're familiar with the real thing.  But for someone in China a safe "silver into gold" trick coin set very appropriately sized for an adolescent magician.

I tried learning coin tricks when I was 13 or 14, but it's really hard work.  You really have to put a lot of time into it.  I preferred escapes which I got really good at.  At 15 I could do the "Siberian Transport Chain" trick so fast that with 3-4 people surrounding me they couldn't figure it out.  After they had locked me up, I'd spin on one heel and drop the chain on the floor.  I repeated it several times before they finally gave up trying to figure it out.  I also did the "100 ft of rope" escape.  Though you can't have people watching while you do that one.

The "milling" does not extend across the entire edge.  I tried posting it next to a real coin, but the file was too large and Dave would not let me do it.

Not even if I offered it to a blind person.  I think it's part of a child's magic set.    I think it's being done as a way to borrow money for short terms at low cost.

If the seller falsely sold 100 units, after expenses he'd have about $4000 which he could use to start a legitimate operation under a different name.  I'm sure they do something similar on Wall Street all the time.

Wow, that's a pretty poor counterfeit job. It's been a long time since I've seen a 50-cent piece in circulation, but I could instantly tell that Kennedy's profile was wrong. Then you see the funky eagle leg, the incorrectly rotated lettering, etc. :palm:

I've seen similarly poor manufacturing in some Kickstarter projects where the project owners have to reject the prototypes multiple times before they're done mostly correctly.

Yes ebay does have phone support they are located over seas and some of the people will just fight with you like its their money. IF this happens don't argue for more then a minute just hang up and call right back to get another person. I bought a 12.00$ beofung from a seller with a lot of positive feedback back but I was pretty sure it was a scam but bet on getting my money back if it was. 30 days which is how long the last one took (that one was 39.00 free shipping, so if it was a return maybe 12.00 was doable) to get and no radio I sent one email didn't hear back so immediately called ebay to get my money back.

First rep says you only have 30 days to dispute and its been 40. So I tell her had she ever used ebay before she clearly had not, that's how long it takes from china. She keeps fighting for 15 minutes, saying it's paypals fault then when I told her paypal is ebay she said call my bank they will give you the money back. I told her that's not how it works in America and the bank isn't an insurance policy for Chinese scammers when the money went from my bank accont into a paypal/ebay a US held company. I was getting ridiculous. I just said "Look up this account in the last week all their feedback turned from positive into negatives and every person says its a scam for the same radio, Ebay needs to catch this, ITS 12 FUCKING DOLLARS EBAY HAS BILLIONS JUST REFUND IT!!!!" So she wouldn't refund, I got the manager and got my money back after about a minute. So lesson is if they give you a hard time just get another person.

Remember ebay makes money off the scam too and they lose a lot if that person cashed out their paypal. I'm sure reps are told or given rewards for lowest number of refunds given how hard that first lady fought me. I'm sure through no fault of her own that $12 is probably a whole days pay, but not to ebay it's not.

I wonder if that fake coin says LIBFRTY on purpose so it's not seen as counterfeit but then again its so close to real money the secret service would want a look at it. If you get caught in the US with counterfeit money you have to give it to the police lose the value of it, and the secret service wants to know your info and you have to tell them where you got it from or all the places you shopped since you got it. When you see fake notes on the walls at the store behind the register technically that's illegal and they are supposed to turn it in.

But I have also seen Chinese things that could have got away with making their product look real if they just spent five minutes on google. Seems strange to put in all that effort but undermine it by not doing the last step. Like fake chips where they get the part number wrong or leave "Operator: J doe" on the packaging.

Why did they send anything in the envelope at all? Send a fake coin and now you have counterfeit currency which is much worse then counterfeit goods, 50 cents doesn't exactly = $60.00, you could have made money selling the coins as magic trick coins or something. You also can't say "we made a mistake and sent the wrong item". I often wonder if its not laziness but sheer stupidity hence why they don't have a real business.

Ebay switched to another seller,  the fun is :  try to contact ebay to cancell your purchase an Ebay says  you did not buy the thing .... when the sell items where removed its like they never existed in ebay, and youre stuck with nothing to call ebay or make an complain to an fraudulent sell

And now i have to rely to the ''ebay purchase protection'', a real joke,  have to wait and go thru the delays ...

I guess that's the price of admission when you try your luck on one of these "too good to be true" deals.

Chances are eBay is stuck with the bill after the scammer ran off with your money. One could argue that responding to deals like these is encouraging scammers, as they might make off with some of the money.

Ebay buyer protection is fine and works well. But you have to follow the steps in the right order and let it happen in the right way. It's not something you can invoke on a whim because you're bored of waiting after deliberately abusing it.

Is the nearly zero chance of getting an item for a low cost on an obviously fraudulent auction worth all the downsides? You need to spend time getting your money back and even though you'll be refunded from eBay/Paypal, you're still helping the seller get their money for a fraudulent auction. You're also giving your details to a scammer so you may end up as a target of brushing or worse.

Ebay removed it.
