[WTB] Looking for monochrome CRT supplier
« on: November 16, 2021, 09:12:30 am »
Good morning (o;

I know that nowadays FPGAs can do at least FullHD HDMI...but just out of curiosity for a new retro project...
Are there some suppliers who still sell small (5" - 9") green/amber CRTs that don't cost a fortune?

Most suppliers I've found so far don't ship to the EU or Switzerland.

thanks in advance
richard

Emulate one with a high-res TFT screen  :box:  Bonus: you can change the color and mimic burn-in effect as well. Like the modern LED lamps are better at mimicing old fashioned carbon wire light bulbs.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I had thought there were no more manufactures of CRTs anywhere in the world until someone pointed out a company that apparently builds or at least remanufactures them for avionics, and those will be anything but cheap. The very last CRT rebuild business in the world shut down about 8 years ago. There is an early television history museum in Ohio that has the rebuilding equipment from Hawkeye which was the last rebuilder in the USA. I think you are about 15 years too late to find anyone to manufacture green or amber monochrome CRTs. There is unfortunately no mass market for them anymore.

It's a shame because nothing else can look quite like a CRT. Especially in applications like vector displays. If you've ever played the original Asteroids arcade game it will be obvious that no other display technology can touch the contrast ratio that achieves.

Might have a smallish monocrome CRT in storage somewhere, 9pin connector, maybe 9", from an old intel 8088 computer.
Or amber CRT from Heidenhain Positip 850 DRO, perhaps 10-12" just CRT with electronics, would need new box/enclosure.
Not sure if either one still works, might need repairs, if interested, I'll dig them out and send pictures.
25Fr each.

Well to simulate some CRT behaviour on an LCD panel it takes some high resolution...leaving only those MIPI DSI displays...which are a nightmare to drive and even to find the correct initialization code...
wondering anyway why a DSI panel with fixed resolution needs to be initialized where RGB/LVDS panels don't need to be...

Hmm...think I'll go with a NOS tube from Russia...the 6LO1I....ordered one for testing...

Need something warm for the next 5 weeks of xmas vacation ;-)

What are you going to drive it with? That's going to be quite an advanced project. The 6LO1I is an electrostatic deflection tube so while you don't have to worry about a deflection yoke, you do need relatively high voltage deflection signals.

I am 54 year old TV repair man....well...what I did in the apprenticeship looong time ago...
And I know how it feels to touch 25kV on an old Color TV ;-)

There a 16LO variant which has a wider screen...but haven't found a source....also too long with 34cm....

Still have some transformer parts lying around originally meant for a scope clock....
