Which DSO is better and why?
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:41:18 am »
Hi all,
i am looking for a new DSO, it has come down to a choice between 2 units. The Rigol DS1102E and the Atten ADS1102CM. Both are 100Mhz and both have similar specs, i think the Atten is a little higher spec. Both have 3 year australian warranty.

Anyone got any ideas on these two or other DSOs in the same price bracket.

Regards
peter

Atten have been fined in the past for copying Rigol's design, not sure if that applies to these models. From the specs, GW Instek looks pretty good.

You do know the Rigol 1102E is rip-off, and you can hack the cheaper 1052E to get the same 100MHz?

Also, these scopes are stupidly expensive in Oz compared with overseas, although the low aussie dollar at the moment does not help that.

See the other thread about the Instek DSO, it looks to be the new bang-per-buck winner.

Dave.

For 100Mhz between both units I would give serious consideration to hacking the 1052E for half the money you've budgeted.
Dave's forum has probably the largest concentration of 1052E hack hits so it worth searching for detailed discussions spanning almost 1 year.

I ended up going with the following setup.

Rigol DS1102E DSO and DG1022 Function Generator.

I know i could have got it cheeper overseas however it was quicker to get one here in Australia and i get to keep the 3 year warranty. I am most impressed with this setup. I could have got the CA version of the DSO but i could not justify the extra expense.
Cant do much with it until we finish moving house. But will be very helpful with the home automation development.

Pictures i can do, as for a review, well, reviews are not my strong point. I will see if i can do something when the dust settles after the house move.

I have not had the time to play with the DS1102E fully yet apart from playing with the usb port a bit. From what i have seen so far, it is the same as the DS1052E only with a higher bandwidth.

The DG1022 is still in storage at the moment. I did a few basic tests when i first got hold of it, it seems accurate and has a fair array of features for the money. I don't see many hobby users needing a FG with more than 20Mhz bandwidth.

Forgive me if this sounds rude(this is not my intention), but that is because they ARE the same.

Infact, they are identical, with the exception of a software change. Otherwise, identical.

However, apparently, at the time of this writing, there is a new firmware (2.05) which has not been able to be hacked.

For reference...

Joshua, you are correct, the 2 units are 99% the same and use different firmware.
There s a slight difference in the hardware on the input stage to accommodate the higher bandwidth.

Hello,
I was looking for the better DSO on the internet and found that Even the DSO Nano is so light and slim, you must not want to always hold it in your hand. Finding something so you can let your DSO Nano stand on the table is very necessary. Few month ago, with the inspiration of one of our customers, we put this Contemporary Minimalism DSO Nano Stand to our catalog....
