Posts that are simply links to your eBay ad should be deleted.

understandable... but some members got banned for posting their product and discussing in test equipment section for no apparent reason. do you wish to clarify? it seems there is "hidden" rule that is not written by Dave among moderator(s). if i post my design that is for sale on ebay, will i get banned too?

If someone rocks up as a new user and tries to start selling stuff in any section they will get banned. Usually if an established member shows off something they are selling it will get moved to the buy/sell section.

Buying and selling is for established members only.

For example in a thread discussing reflow ovens a first time poster has just posted a link to an ebay auction. i will delete the post and ban him. The email looks like it was set up just for this account as it is nonsensical.

i dont see that kind of regulation anywhere stated in written form here by Dave. and imho its a double standard if newcomers cant discuss their product here, when long time members can. one person (seller) can pretend to become a helpfull member, when satifying post count is reached, then he can sell or promote anything? there are few members here prone to some product sales such as Keysight, Siglent etc but they are welcomed (they should), but for newcomers there is no clear cut, how they are going to know? i think it will be prejudice, as people always said, we cant judge people by its cover. newcomers should get warned and educated if they violated some form of regulation here, not directly get banned without warning. and again most importantly, there is no rules and regulation stating this (newcomers come and selling product) cant be done.  i can understand if member get banned if they annoyed or spam or insult or overly defensive (harsh words) to some other members, but latest occurence (RD Tech), there is no such thing afaik.

There are no clear rules because it is case by case and the basic ethics should be consistent around the world.

What I usually do is first split the user into the commercial and personal user, then the blatant piss taker and the unaware blunderer.

Commercial users are welcome to support their products but not just dump adverts on the forum unless they have some sort of arrangement with Dave. So RD tech got banned because he just showed up and posted multiple copies of the same add around the forum. The likes of agilent don't do that and they try to support their products and interact with users.

If a personal user just dumps links to ebay in the buy sell section with no further involvement i ban them. If a personal user makes a project that they wish to sell I will be more patient and see if they actually take part and move their project to the buy/sell section.

As always if you have hard and fast rules you soon find that the rules are not adequate. The first thing is to work out the intent of the poster and if they have a genuine interest in the forum.

If it's free then go ahead. It's just that we have a lot of link dumping, people stick something on ebay and then go round putting links on forums.

LFS: 8-pin connectors <<< BAD
LFS: Cheap DB9 right angle male solder-in connectors <<< EXCELLENT

Shouldn't these both be bad?  Certainly quoting an incorrect part number is a bad thing.

It should be a DE9  (DB is the physical shell, normally used for 25 pin connectors, DE is the shell size for 9 pin and VGA style 15 pin)

I started topic about importing an an item that I can't get hold of anywhere else apart from one seller in Australia and they won't ship it out.

I only found "Buy / Sell / Wanted rules" after the posting the topic.
Sorry about that.

I couldn't find anything against paying another member to ship things internationally where the seller refuses too but is that okay or is it against the rules?

i can't see anything wrong with that, I'm sure it's been discussed before. Obviously it's an agreement between the members of the forum and the forum itself is no responsible in any way for outcomes

It's ok he paid me an unnecessary gratuity I didn't want so I will just spend it on Beer ;D . Goods ordered and underway.

For light weight bits where a seller won't ship internationally buying and addressing an international satchel and sliding it in is easy and Paypal makes the transfer simple and fairly safe. Usual cautions apply if you don't know them caveat emptor and such, MrMobodies and I didn't before today so that has been a positive thing.

For Heavy Test Gear that a buyer is in 'need of' it is an issue to advertise here as some other member is likely to buy it instead of the poster  >:D

To moderators: any suggestions on what to do after something has been sold? Should I just delete the post to reduce clutter or change the title to "SOLD" as I've seen on the forum?

Just change the subject to Sold like you say. People do not take kindly to having threads they have posted in deleted plus I'm not sure you can delete your thread once it has replies as one user may not delete another users posts.

What about companies? Like this one: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/buysellwanted/kaisertech-10-sale-on-jbc-soldering-esd-static-control-quick-esd-furniture/ .

TBH I'm not impressed with their prices for jbc even with a discount.

Moderator Note: We seem to get many people sign up and only post stuff for sale.

In our forum (hifi-forum.de) we had this problem too.
To prevent our members for fake-sales and to prevent us for seller-only accounts, we got following hurdles implemented:

-Users with at last 6 month of registration AND min 100 posts counted could enter the selling place and post an offer.
-Only non-commercial members are allowed to post an offer.
-The buy/wanted place can be used without having at last 100 posts.

Sure, there were some kind of users, which spam as much as they can to reach the "magical 100" - If we take notice about, they could be banned for the marketplace.
Further some areas of our forum won´t count the posts if written there (e.g. when you talk about football in a hifi-forum, you do it in our general talking area and your post-counter won´t be raised).
Additional, if you post and the last post in this thread was also from you, it won´t be counted too.

And, a really advantage for our moderations work:
Only the threadstarter can post in his buy/sell thread.
Users which were interested to his offer/wanted, can only contact him via email or private message.
No discussions in the thread, which often ends in confusing/dispute.

Threadstartes can modify their posts in 24h, a new post will be possible after 72h to prevent massive push-ups.

After implementing these rules, we got a much "clearer" and more "seriously" marketplace.

This would require the forum software to be able to do this stuff you suggest. I have no idea if it does.

Yepp, our forum software was made by the former webmasters (IT students which sells their forum in 2009) themselfes, no standard codec was used if I could remember it correct.
We (Administrators) could do several modifications per any sub-forum like the mentioned hurdles before.
As I was here for the first time, I was a little bit confused about some things here.
For example after written and send a post in a thread, in our forum you will fall back in the thread you posted - Here you will fall back at the start screen...why, makes no sense.
In our forum, the threadstarter will be always marked in red underline (First the nickname, under this as threadstarter in red) when he posts in his thread, etc.
Our forum Software was oldie (2002) but sometimes goldie….

Right, thread cleaned up a bit. Sorry Brumley, that was such a shouting match that I lost track of who was trying to make the purchase.

As Simon has chosen to sanitize the discussion from a current WTB thread and it is relevant I am posting here. A member claimed 'rules' which don't exist other than a 'note' that Simon added to post #1 in this thread (shown in Red) above the now Eight year old member written guidelines.

There was no shouting match just an ill informed member claiming 'A Rules Breach' and trying to make a case that there was some sort of breach of a non existent rule. This was pointed out by Simon why the 'note' was added and the member sought to continue as though it was a set in stone Rule.

As it has happened before and will happen again perhaps we need to discuss a more formal set of guidelines for this section or tweak it with more/better explanations.

The current shoot first policy on a whim with only eight year old guidelines perhaps needs to be looked at again or at least fleshed out. It does in the main work fairly well and most live within it without raising a blip but blips do occur as at best they are a bit vague.

There is a few members who push the boundaries a little running commercial interests here and some members who post up some small production specialist projects for sale. The line between these is very close but it remains cloudy at best. This is one area I would like to see clarified.

This thread for example that has resulted in a member ban  :-//  https://www.eevblog.com/forum/buysellwanted/huntron-tracker-2800/ There was no bumping from the member or obvious thing done wrong and no explanation given for the ban. I would be interested to know what that member did wrong to deserve a ban?

How this discussion goes forward and if we need some more formal rules I throw open for comment from others or does it need to be put in a separate thread :)

The majority of posts are about selling and clearly there is a potential for people to abuse this in particular people registering for the sole purpose of selling. As is made clear already people may not conduct commercial selling on here only their personal stuff unless by prior agreement. I don't see the problem here. We did have a lot of people try to rock up and sell large quantities of PC parts as a commercial thing. That is what the rules are about.

You can of course ask about something you are interested in buying and although this seldom is required people are welcome to do so. there are no specific rules about this as there is nothing to abuse. Making more rules will not stop people from jumping up and down waving around a clearly misinterpreted rule. The more rules you have the more misinterpretation you can have.

We don't really have a problem in this section any more. I think the recent discussion that started to eclipse the original topics intent was just a case of someone wanting an argument that can happen over this section or any other aspect of the forum.

I fail to see how having more rules leads to misinterpretation  :-// The only way that is possible is if the rule either makes no sense or is poorly written or worse written for no reason. Currently we have what I would call a set of guidelines written by one member a long while ago in Internet time. I see some shortcomings in them and they are due for a refresh and some input and then a separate sticky from either you or Dave. While you as a Moderator don't see the need to rules or more fleshed out guidelines the general membership then has to rely what?

In the thread I linked in my previous post I can see nothing was done wrong unless there is something unseen or deleted? The member had made a few other posts around the forum and there is nothing obviously wrong in that thread and yet he was banned?

The bulk deletion from that WTB thread is not the reason I raise this but it is the reason why the deletion and moderation was needed. It came from someone reading into a 'note' what they wanted it to say and not what the intent was.

Correct. So what do you suggest rules wise? This is the first time in a long time we have ever had to worry about this. Any rules required so far have been to spell out the obvious to people who come here hoping to use it as a no fees ebay site to sell their stuff. There will always be things we have not thought of before and we hope people operate on common sense.

As you seem to not want to answer the direct question about the now banned member in the thread I linked you seem happy with a lack of them so you can act as you see fit? That member as far as I can tell did nothing wrong and as a fairly new member to the forum had made some posts in various other topics and yet you banned him seemingly without cause?

As to a basic set of rules and guidelines just a few random thoughts below.

No For Sale listings by members with less than X posts. In the past on other forums 5-10 posts was 'normal'. This can be done by a member permission/group in SMF or just put up as a rule and left to be moderated if needed. This generally puts paid to drive by spammers or opportunists. Also perhaps some leeway for members of more than a few months with minimal postings ?

Adds must contain a Guide Price either Sale or a Price Range in the case of WTB. It doesn't mean the seller won't take an offer but this isn't a blind Auction site.

Titles - Post #1 sort of covers that in Location and basic information

Adds when sold should have their title amended with a SOLD when finalised. This is only a nicety but it saves threads resurfacing with a "is this still for sale" post months later.

Obvious Commercial/Ebay linked threads accounts only by approval of Dave or perhaps some leeway for long term members?

Just a few ideas of a basic set of rules/guidelines to start it off.

I have not banned anyone regarding that thread so I have no idea what you are talking about or who you are talking about. I can't make changes to SMF, that is for Dave. You seem to be trying to pin down problems that are not there. If people want a more serious system as you suggest with all these features then I can suggest ebay!
