I have not banned anyone regarding that thread so I have no idea what you are talking about or who you are talking about.

Really, this one:

A guy with 9 posts all of which seem nice and polite yet he's banned ?  :-//

early poster trying to sell stuff, clearly against what rules we do have. If anyone wants to explain I am happy to listen.

I've banned him.

:-// Seems fairly clear who banned them?

This is one of the issues as seemingly nothing was done to warrant sanction and the members have a reasonable right to know so they can avoid being Banned themselves for reasons unknown. With an appropriate set of guidelines/rules at least it could be referred to by the members.

Very recently a member with a commercial business in this section deleted their thread of only a few days ago that had no replies only to immediately repost it to bump it back up the page. There is currently nothing 'wrong' with it but this sort of thing deserves to be avoided.

Where does that RULE exist? The member had made a few posts prior to opening their thread and then got shot without any warning or PM. This is heavy handed if that is your only justification. Was there a PM sent, was there a warning in the thread? No the member was shot first and no option was given.

So yau start talking about one thread that was recent and then allude to another, what do you think I am beanflying bloody clairvoyant? Look if you have a problem make clear what that is, I don't do telepathy. If you think you have a better way of doing it then work it all out and then come and tell us.

His location information was not clear and he did not answer the questions. As the introduction to the section says it is for long standing members. This guy rocked up and had something to sell with dubious location information, that is against the rules!

As for any other perceived iregularities unless we are told we are non the wiser. This stuff is hard to police. The alternative to achieve perfection is to not have a buy/sell section.

Why should we have a problem with someone bumping their Buy/Sell/WTB thread ?  :-//

None of us use the forum in the same way or even visit the Buy/Sell/WTB board very often as I might only go there when I spot something posted there on the main forum page.
However, there was some apparent interest in what the guy offered but it didn't eventuate in a sale so the guy dropped the price and in doing so bumped it. Seen exactly this many times in the Buy/Sell/WTB board.

Yeah we need some very clear rules.

My interpretation of the rules was that the Buy/Sell/Wanted section is somewhat reserved for those who contribute to the forum, giving advice and assistance to other members qualifies as a contribution and inturn permits usage of the B/S/W section.

The member in question had nine posts, four of which were asking for advice and the other five in relation to an item for sale, the moderators stated they took action based on a questionable location or IP address, not necessarily the members prior posts.

If beanflying wants to go buying from dodgy characters i would just let him go right ahead.

I've backed away from my request and have bought one off eBay.

Hopefully from a not too dodgy character (feedback is 100% with other tech sales, so we'll see).

My 'WTB' post.  (Maybe "request" wasn't the best word.)

Nothing requiring any action by anyone here.  Apologies if I caused any confusion.

Hardly the sort of reply we might expect from a moderator Simon.
Muttley makes a valid observation and you bring beanflying into the discussion.  :-//

Rightly or wrongly your actions have been questioned whether you like it or not and I'm not the only one confused by the methods you sometimes moderate here.
I can say you've treated me fairly however of other members I know whom have been banned I'm not so sure.

Criticism should not be seen a personal attack but instead concern of experienced members that other members may well have been unnecessary banned as a result of a willingness to press the ban trigger instead of delving deeper.

Simon I very clearly linked the thread and the ban imposed in it in the opening post. If you chose to gloss over my post and not read it let alone try to follow what was written then there is nothing I can do about your issue!

In this day and age of fairly widespread VPN usage dubious IP addresses abound and the correlation from actual user location to apparent is not to be relied on. I was for example block banning IP ranges on an SMF forum I was managing but I have removed them as they had become largely ineffective with the rise of cheap VPN's.

I see NO mention of "long standing members" anywhere in the opening post of this topic but feel free to point me to where it is?

You have seemingly used assumption and no attempt to contact that member via PM or Email to summarily execute them on grounds of 'suspicion'. A simple check of their other posts would go toward their bona fides  and if there was maybe a threat of a fraudulent sale then lock or remove the thread maybe at worst? If your reasoning of 'suspicion' is used then every member using a VPN should be afraid of a ban and yet we allow serial thread starters from Antarctica to exist :-//

Without some basic rules to follow members apparently are taking a risk of being banned on a whim.

I just joined today and want to post a batch of WTB posts.  I don't know enough to contribute to forum-relevant topics in any meaningful way  :)

If whomever moderates this post could get back to me on this it would be appreciated; I don't want to torque anyone off inadvertently.

If you are wanting to buy then not as much of a problem as selling, people tend to register then dump ebay links. If you are buying the stuff you must know enough to help someone out, people here are interested in all sorts.

america is not the only country in the world

Yet it is the only country in the world to which I will ship, and I doubt that I am alone in that practice. Even more emphatically, the only country in the world to which I will send or transfer money since I expect an assurance of receiving goods in return :)

And even in this world where everyone has a grudge, and everyone is somehow manages to be offended by life and reality, why should a US buyer need to do conversions?  A seller prospers by accommodating the buying public, and something tells me that a goodly chunk of the sales on this site are made to US buyers, so it seems just good marketing practice to pitch one's goods priced in the currency of probably the majority of buyers.

Just sayin'  :)  I really don't care, because as I said, I do not buy from overseas individual vendors.

why you dont stick to ebay.com.us? i think most US members here will look over there if to buy/sell something. but if you have plenty of time updating stocks in here and on ebay... if you want to make a buy/sell post, i suggest make sure you include #USA ONLY in the title because we dont want to waste time reading nostalgic story just to figure out in the end we cant buy/sell from/to you, worst if we have to PM you in hope. otherwise you are the kind of people we tend to ignore buy/sell/wanted section and miss the posts from who are willing to ship worldwide. i bought few items from this forum from your nearby place too, but mostly from ebay, the first thing i will look is if they ship internationally or not. if not, i wont bother to read item's description.

why you dont stick to ebay.com.us?

I do - all my online sales are on ebay.com - here in the US we do not have to add the .US

My purchases are from US based companies only, regardless of the initial source of the goods.  The last time I bought overseas was a multi-pallet Fluke 9010A in 2006; it went well, and I figured I would quit whilst I was ahead  :)

if you want to make a buy/sell post, i suggest make sure you include #USA ONLY in the title

Very good point thank you.
