Ebay Gem
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:16:31 am »
Ebay scope of the day:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LeCroy-Wavemaster-Digital-Oscilloscope-was-Broken-1-/111877989911

"*was* broken"? - Looks ok to me.

"I do not know if it works properly or not." - yeah, hard to tell.

Who else is curious to know what is the story behind such destruction?

OTOH, in both they seem to have removed the knobs (probably to sell on eBay as spares). I wonder what else they've stripped from these, specially from inside them.

That they ended up like that is bad enough - but the money asked is crazy.

Or maybe he spent years designing and simulating a circuit, but when it was time to have the first prototype working, things didn't go as planned, and he did the sensible thing to do: blame it on the scope.

Maybe I should just print these pics and stick them to my scope. It'll know what will happen to it if it ever gives me the readings that aren't what I expect.

My guess is they were faulty or surplus in the warehouse and someone dropped the pallet. Really a testament to those potentiometer shafts though.

This similar model looks a bit better!

Your second post again promoting this particular auction site may be frowned upon by some including those above.

Hmmm... if I had time on my hands I might put in an offer for the second scope. It wouldn't be the first time I bought a scope with a smashed screen and some damage to the casing. A new TFT panel and some (retro look) shiny aluminium knobs will make it look a lot better >:D
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I'd bet that the second one you posted Dave, could be fixed up.
as long as the input hardware of a lecroy scope is fine, most of it can be replaced with other stuff if you can acquire the drivers (being PC based)

Pity the first one's bottom board looks destroyed...

EDIT:

PLEASE buy the second one Dave, It would make a great teardown video... maybe see if you can resurrect parts of it even? It could prove interesting. Worst case, put it back on Ebay again.

Did anyone else notice in the second photo there is a pixelated patch? It looks like there was an asset label or something that they couldn't be arsed removing, so they pixelated it so you can't tell where they are from. Probably a dumpster dive, not sure if they are motivated or smart enough to strip for parts if they can't even remove a sticker :P
