FREE (US), you pay shipping, will part out if desired
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:44:09 pm »
Hi all:

We are downsizing and so I find it necessary to get rid of my old test equipment.  Rather than take it to the dump straightaway, I thought I'd make an offer to my fellow EEVbloggers.

First off, everything is FREE.  All you need do is pay shipping.  I will only charge what I have to pay to ship it.  This is not a money-making deal for me.

Second, I am willing to part things out (that is, remove particular components or subassemblies) if you only need particular pieces.  So, if you only want the CRT from that Tek 535a scope, I'll gladly remove it and send it to you.  I will give preference to anyone who wants to take the entire unit, but most of this stuff is big iron so I don't expect to get any takers on that.

I'm doing this not only to lighten my load, but because I think that there are collectors and restorers out there who might need a replacement transformer or range switch for a piece of broken test gear, but they don't want to buy and ship a massive piece of metal to get it.

Third, I'll do this on a time-available basis.  So it may take a little while for me to get the pieces extracted and sent to you.

Fourth, it is first-come, first-served.  As mentioned before I will give preference to anyone who wants the entire unit, but I'll be fair.  I'll wait for a couple weeks to collect requests for each piece and then figure out what to do.

As I come up with things I will post descriptions and pictures in this topic.

Thanks!
Vernon

MrWizerd needs a scope but he's all the way out in CA.  You're right by me so I'm looking forward to your updates.  Accepting pick ups?

Yes I do need a scope, I am just a noob, I don't have much in terms of testing equipment other than my DMM of course.  But today is my birthday, and I will have funds from it for shipping all the way to California for stuff I could use that is.  I look forward to your posts, and thank you for your generosity in advance!

I'm glad I just reactivated my US re-shipper account.
Eagerly awaiting your list and photos.

Heh, I could 'put my hand up' early by posting my equipment want list, but I guess that would be cheating, and make more work for you. Which I certainly don't wish to do.

Btw, do you have op/service manuals for any of them, and are they going too?

I had a huge pile of "stuff" from an estate I had to get rid of.  Would have cost me $$$ to have someone haul it all away.  I put an add in Craigslist as a free-for-all and it was like a horde of locusts descending on a field of grain and picking it clean  :-DD  Broken ladders, cracked dishes, old magazines, you name it people were carrying it away.  Within a couple of hours it was almost entirely gone.

Say the magic word free and you can get rid of nearly anything.

All that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing the list  :-DD

I'm looking forward too for your upcoming posts..maybe you have some spare parts of a Tek475 scope in case i'll be needing it badly. As of now the scope is not yet on my possesion for repiar. But surely I'll be needing some hard to find parts as it is ancient.

Agreed, but depending on the products it is much better for me to pay for USPS than try and source them locally. Most things are either impossible to find in Brazil or taxes + customs duties + exchange rate (US$) make them prohibitive.

One such example: I've been looking high and low around here for a 15k linear taper rotary potentiometer. Nobody has one. If I buy them from DigiKey, Mouser or any e-store that will ship to Brazil, a single part will end up costing over US$ 100!!! (I am not kidding).

GONE: Systron-Donner Datapulse 101 Pulse Generator
« Reply #18 on: October 28, 2015, 03:33:22 am »
Up for grabs is the aforementioned generator.  I've attached pics.

This unit works...occasionally.  When it works it creates fine looking pulses.  It obviously has some intermittent connection that I don't want to track down.

Here are some specs:

Repetition Rates: 10 Hz to 10 MHz in 6 ranges, single or double pulse
Main Output: Up to + 10V amplitude, 5 ns rise time
External Trigger: AC coupled.  Single cycle to 10 MHz for +/- 0.4 volt pulses (30 ns min duration) or 50 Hz to 10 MHz from 2 volt rms sine waves
Pulse Delay: 40 ns to 10 ms in six ranges
Gating: Selectable as non-gated, synchronously gated or asynchronously gated output
    Normal and complement outputs

Dimensions: 9 in/23 cm wide, 4 in/10.5 cm tall (including feet), 11 in/28 cm deep (including knobs)
Weight: 8 lbs/4 kg.  Add another couple pounds for box and packing if you are estimating shipping.

Let me know if you are interested.

Lurkers everywhere.
Wish easy and fast recovery.

I think there is no need for highly detailed and photographed listings, just a table with "Item/Condition(works/sorta/dead/scrap)" would be enough, given your sale trade conditions. It would save a lot of trouble for you, and will move stuff quicker, especially if international shipping not killed.

OK then!  So it shall be.  Thanks.

I would ask that, when you reply, please put the item name in the title!  Otherwise, if you say "I'll take that", I won't have any idea what "that" is  :)

I will also rely on you all to estimate the shipping to make your decision.  I'll give weight and dimensions.  My two options are UPS and the Post Office.  If real shipping cost turns out to be way out of line when I actually box and pack, then you can say "no" and no hard feelings.

Thanks,
Vernon

Will you accept local pickup?  You're just a little over an hour north of me.  I actually go grocery shopping in Rindge.

ITEMS: Big iron test equipment
« Reply #37 on: October 30, 2015, 07:36:19 pm »
Hi all:

I have 6 pieces of big iron up for grabs.  (I want my garage back  :) )  It would be insane for me to try to ship these, so I assume I'll be parting them out.

I am going to be keeping all of the common tubes (7-pin, 9-pin, octals) to feed other parts of my hobby (antique radios and audio).  I'm not interested in holding on to specialized tubes.

  • H-P 608D VHF Signal Generator: I have two of these, one in a standalone cabinet and the other rack mount.
  • H-P 612A UHF Signal Generator: Rack mount
  • H-P 606B HF Signal Generator: Rack mount
  • Tektronix 531 scope with Type A plug-in
  • Tektronix 535 scope

Thanks,
Vernon

I'm trying to setup a digital electronics lab and need everything except an oscilloscope. I would prefer working equipment since I'm just getting started. I live in Austin, Texas.

I live in a small apartment so I'm going to have to pass on any of your big iron. Do you have any power supplies?

Wow, the 608D and 606B are classics. The scopes are lovely old models too. I hope a collector/restorer can pick them up intact, so they have a chance to work again.
Not my cup of tea though, since I'm short on space and *theoretically* I'm supposed to be building a lab for a specific purpose, not just old gear restoration fun.

Announcing you're going to remove most of the valves might not have been a good idea, if you want to get rid of these units. Hopefully you'd wait a while to see if anyone is interested in taking them complete?

I was going to say I'd take the lot since I'm local and can pick them up but I don't think that would be fair to everyone else.  I could give them a loving home though as we're getting ready to buy a house and I'll have the room since I've insisted on either a garage or a basement for my bits to spread out in.

On the other hand, if you take them all you'll save Vernon so much work! He's not well, you should ease his burdens.
Also, if you go round to his place and get to know him you may be able to ease even more of his excess equipment burdens.  There is such a thing as being too fair to everyone. It's been a whole day...

Coincidence: I too 'disposed of' a HP 608C VHF signal generator, and a HP 606A signal generator. http://everist.org/NobLog/20140324_HP_relics.htm

I offered to help out in any way I could actually, boxing stuff, taking photos etc.  Getting free goods is a nice benefit but since he's recovering from surgery and I'm close enough to make a day of it, I thought I would offer help which might be more useful than freeing up space.  Of course, I can't define that value to him so taking away everything in one shot might be worth more and I'll certainly do it if I can get it to fit in my Passat wagon.

Wow, the 608D and 606B are classics. The scopes are lovely old models too. I hope a collector/restorer can pick them up intact, so they have a chance to work again.
Not my cup of tea though, since I'm short on space and *theoretically* I'm supposed to be building a lab for a specific purpose, not just old gear restoration fun.

Announcing you're going to remove most of the valves might not have been a good idea, if you want to get rid of these units. Hopefully you'd wait a while to see if anyone is interested in taking them complete?

All three generators are classics. I have logged a lot time using an HP-612.

I would be interested in the H-P 606B if still available.  How much shipped to 49534?

Thanks!

Ah, yes, I was not clear on that.  If anyone wants the entire unit, then I will leave everything as it is.  As you point out, not much use without the tubes :)  Only if I get no takers for the entire unit will I take the tubes out.

I think we can get everything gone and out of your way quick.  If you want to ship stuff out I'd say they should get first dibs but I'll take everything off your hands in one go if you'll let me, or at least what's left that you want to get rid of.

Thanks.  I'll probably take you up on that later, but for now I still have dozens and dozens of bins and boxes to go through.  I'm posting things as I find them - it's not like I have a big pile of stuff ready to go.

Thanks,
Vernon

TAKEN: All items

All items in the list below are TAKEN.  Thanks for your interest!

Vernon

<><><><><><><><><><>

Here's what I have unearthed in the past couple days:

  • Dick Smith Electronics K-4003 IR Remote Control Preamp Kit: I actually bought three of these and built two.  One I used myself for a few years and the other I gave to my parents so they could adjust their audio system from their chairs.  This is the one I didn't build.  It's not a bad preamp, and a good kit to assemble.

The finished product measures 13.75"/35 cm wide, 9.5"/24 cm deep and 2.5"/6.5 cm tall.  Shipping weight will be about 10 lbs/4.5 kg.

  • Pace PPS-101SR2 Solder/Desolder Station: This has a lot of options.  It has connections for an Electro-Pulse handpiece, which apparently is used for SMD work.  It has a connector for a Minichine, which is a Dremel tool-like handpiece.  It has a pressure and suction pump, which works, so you can use it with either desoldering or hot-jet handpieces.  And finally it has two variable temperature controls for soldering irons - these are a standard USA 15A socket so I'd guess any 120v iron would work with them.  It also comes with the foot pedal.

I don't remember if I had handpieces for this or not, but there are none near it now.  If I unearth any while unpacking, I will send them to you at my expense.

There is a removable soldering iron holder on the right side; it holds two small pencil irons.  Without the holder, the unit is 13"/33 cm wide, 12"/30.5 cm deep and 6"/15 cm high.  The holder adds another 4.5"/11.5 cm to the width.  Shipping weight will be about 18 lbs/8.2 kg.

  • DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) H758-A Rack Mount +5 V, ±15 V Linear Power Supply: This is a heavy-duty supply that was made to run in industrial environments.  I think it will outlive all of us.  I used this as my bench supply for several years.  The output current is not huge - +5V @ 4A, ±15 V at 2A each - but the power is nice and clean, good enough for low-noise audio in my experience.

From the factory it had a screw terminal block on the front for connections.  I modified that and put nice 5-way binding posts on instead.

The unit is 19"/48.3 cm wide, 12"/30.5 cm deep and 3 rack units (5.25"/13.3 cm) high.  It weighs in at 24 lbs/11 kg.

TAKEN: Tek 453 oscilloscope

The Tek 453 is taken.

<><><><><><><><><><>

Tek 453 scope.  In decent physical shape, could use a general cleaning, but no trace.  The front panel lights come on as they should, and the "Trigger" light says it's ready to go, but I can't get it to trigger.

Dimensions are 12.5"/32 cm wide by 23.5"/60 cm deep by 7.25"/18.5 cm high.  (Interesting fact: The 435 was designed by Tektronix to fit under an airplane seat, per request from IBM field service.)  Shipping weight would be about 33 lbs/15 kg.

User and service manuals are available on the Web.

Let me know if interested.

I was kind of hoping you had a scope.  I need two more channels as my projects are just starting to get interesting.
